Can't believe nobody posted, I haven't checked around for prices lately, but this is hot, haha, I remember when it wasn't even this low with coupons! Nice find OP.

Those don't include single core chips with 1meg L2 cache and Opterons

What do you guys think is better.... Opteron 146 with 1MB cache or X2 3800+ with 512KB cache? Especially after the price cuts of the X2 and the current price of the opteron.

Wait for the X2 to drop its price. You'll be getting dual core for about the price you'd pay for that single core now.

Yeah, If I was going to get the X2, I would definitely wait for the price drop but what I am asking is which would be better? Should I go dual core with 512KB cache (X2) or the opty single core with 1MB cache? I don't game that much and I do mainly programming, office products, IE and some video encoding.

Depending on the video apps you use (whether they support multi cpus) I'd go with the X2.
I'm waiting for the price drop myself to upgrade my video encoding/editing rig.

Just got my CCBBE 0610DPMW today. $230 shipped is Hot ASFAIC

I'll post with OC results. It has pretty stiff competition to make me swap out my current Opty. CCBWE 0550 TPMW 2.86 GHz at 1.55v

Anyone know how long we should expect these 1xx Opties to be around? I wonder what the last steppings manufactured were. I've heard of 0617 chips but nothing after that...

Quick and dirty tests with 2xSuperPI 8M and then a run of 3dMark06 just to see what is obviously NOT stable.

Rig is in the sig, just swapped out the cpu. TR SI-120, OCZ Powerstream 600w; antec P-180 case maxed out with evercool dual bearing 120mm fans (96cfm each)

So far at default voltage:
280x9 (2.53GHz) 2xsuperPI 8MB and 3dMark06 both run fine without any hicups.
290x9 (2.61GHz) 2xsuperPI 8MB OK; 3dMark06 ...
300x9 (2.7GHz) POST ok but no BOOT into Windows.

So I heard of some people getting 2.7GHz at stock volts, I'm not getting that at least not on AIR. But still very impressive. My current Opty is at 2.86 on 1.55v. That chip could not do 2.5GHz at default volts. This new chip is doing that AND more. I'm feeling pretty good at getting to 3+ GHz as people claim for this stepping. Nice. of course I'll do more robust stability testing with Prime95 and all, I just wanted to see what I could do at stock voltage. The Arctic Silver isn't even cuered yet.

While it's probably solid advice to get the most cache you can (IMHO) I would also advise you to make your purchases with the future in mind. And the future is multi-core. Whether it's games, multimedia, office apps, development, whatever... it's all going to only get more multithreaded aware.

Personally I'd go with a 2x1mb opty 170 and up. Or if you want to save a little go with the 3600/3800 dual cores, albeit with less cache.

Good lord, I'll bet that thing levitates off the floor doesn't it?

Anyway, I've got that same case and I gotta tell ya, best case I have EVER owned. Just absolutely stunning.

I have 2 computers at home:

One is Opteron 165 and the other one is 3800+ X2. Even though the 3800+ is clocked higher than the 165, the 165 is faster not let me rephrase that it is "quicker" in everything I do in my computer, booting up, shutting down, multimedia, gaming, encoding, everything everything. My 165's computer runs more efficiently and doesn't hang whereas the 3800+ hangs every once in a while.
