i'd rather just get an X2 3800, performance will still be negligable for the typical enthusiast unless ur an opteron freak

Thanks, OP -- got one to upgrade my 3500 single-core. I checked at (H) and didn't see any coupons for this.

My friend made me an offer for my old mobo and CPU. I'd have to replace my mobo with another NF4 mobo. What's currently the best NF4 mobo for overclocking?

A DFI Ultra-D is a well known overclockers board.

You'll like it.

Thanks, Overkill, I recall hearing about that board before. Newegg has the Ultra-D for 99 + CA tax, so Monarch's $112 looks OK. Think I'll call tomorrow and add it to my order. I just missed the $20 rebate on the Abit KN8 boards, which would've been sweet. People say those o/c well, but they do have layout issues.

yeah, the 165 was hot when it was the same price as the 3800+, because max overclock potential was pretty much the same and you got the extra cache as a bonus. Considering the 3800+ is about $70 cheaper, I know which one I was going to get if I were upgrading. If it is for a new platform all together, this price falls between C2D E6300/6400...

Given that the 4400 X2 retail is only $10 more, and also has 1MB cache/core, perhaps that is a better deal. What say you all?

how well does the 4400 OC?

edit: nvm the 4400 seems to be a poor OCer. opteron 165 has been known to have average OC at 2.8ghz or something.

My older opteron 165 I struggle to get stable @ 2.52 GHz, I think mine's a bit of a dud though =(

are you starting over? i'd consider a conroe instead... if it was a simple cpu single core -> dual core swap i'd probably get the 4400+ (1.8ghz vs 2.2ghz)

Depends upon what you're looking for. Here's the short of it - Conroe is good for now, and won't be upgradable. The AM2 socket will be upgradable to quads and more. (AMD has stated all AM3 CPUs will be socket compatible with AM2 sockets.)

AMD based MBs also have all sorts of goodies, Core 2 MBs are still working out the kinks, are somewhat bare, and are pricey. Oh, and did I mention that in general Conroe based systems use slightly more power @ idle, and perhaps just a smidgin less power at full load? (My machine spends more time at idle than at full load, YMMV.)

But, if cash isn't an issue, then Core 2/Conroe is fine for now, as it is indisputedly the peak performer. If games are your thing, then Conroe brings nothing to the table performance wise, since GPUs are your bottleneck.

So, I decided to stay with AMD on this round, because a 939 X2 3800+ combo cost me exactly $160 to build. I have 2GB of DDR RAM that otherwise would go to waste, now it'll be used in this box. With Conroe, I'd have to buy DDR2 ram as well, so that upped the price. Granted, the 939 won't be upgradable, but this one's slotted for an HTPC, so upgrading isn't really an issue.

Am I greedy for wanting x2 3800's to come down some more? I'm waiting for $130 shipped. Will it happen soon?
