Well i ordered my opteron 165 from newegg, and it should be here about tuesday or wednesday. I have an a8n-sli premium mobo, 2 gigs of pc3200 ram, and a 7800 gt oc vid card. I am an overclocker, and want to know if anyone else runs a similar configuration. IF so, can i bum some numbers off u because id like to hae something to start with and adapt, rather than blindly guess numbers and spend like 4 hours getting it right. Im looking to get it to about 2.6-2.9 ghz. i have a nzxt nemesis elite case, and it has plenty of cooling, and the stock fan that this cpu comes with is pretty cool with the heatpipes and all. Thanks

If you head over to the Overclocking bit then there's a thread on how to go about overclocking your system, with detailed information about how to find out what your chip can manage.

You're not going to get 2.9Ghz on air, i've heard of 2.7Ghz but anything much higher than that's going to be watercooling or better. Also the stock heatsink is good, but i doubt it's as good as say a SI 120 with a nexus on it, or a zalman 9500. 2.6Ghz is about all you'll get i recon.

If there was someone who could tell you exactly what numbers to punch into your BIOS, before you even had the chip in your hands, s/he'd be a very popular person around here.

Read this before asking questions. The thread is kind enough to link to several programs you'll need, and answers just about any question you might have about overclocking the chip. Chances are it will take some time to find the max values for your mobo, CPU, and RAM, especially if you have at least half a brain and test with Memtest86 and Prime95 as you go. You might want to consider testing with Prime95 and 3dMark05 at the same time...that 'Ultra' power supply you've listed in your sig isn't exactly a quality part.

If you're serious about 2.7+ ghz, then forget the stock HSF and buy a Thermalright SI-120 or the like. Then stick a nice low speed 120mm fan on top.

overclocking takes time. and time. and time. there is a method. if you throw in random numbers you are not going to get good results. burning in the cpu at stock speed and knocking down stock voltage can increase the overclocking sometimes drastically.

for instance:
stock speed, stock voltage - 24hr burn in
stock speed, -.25v - 24hr burn

repeat until it fails. Even if you dont gain speed you may shave of voltage which in turn increases the life of your chip and keeps it cooler.

to be honest with you. most people who say i hit yay yay speed are not stable. and have tweaked it out to the point of perfection. but that takes time and not everyone is patient especially when that is the only computer you have. as chocouracal said read. there is plenty of existing threads all over that darn internet. good luck and be patient and use a system that doesnt invlove jacking the multi reboot see if it works if not try again you will get nowhere.

This has been proven to be a myth, there is nothing you can do to increase the OC'ability of the chip

It's in the CPU forum, there was a long explanation from an intel engineer that basically said : It's rubbish.

What does happen is the thermal interface material settles down, but that's the only bit that improves overclocking ability.

Maybe it is not so much as increasing its ability but more so working with it slowly. I dont know man, but I have used that method and gotten great results as opposed to when i didn't. I am just saying that you don't crank it up, it is a slow process. I am no engineer though.

Working up slowly is a definite yes. But "burning in" the cpu is no different to just running it at stock for a bit playing games.

Going slow is always a good idea, but defintitely not required. If you get a MB/CPU combo that has been tested by many others, you will already have a very good idea of what the final results will be. Where the extra time comes in is eeking out every last bit of performance you can while keeping it stable.
