Well i ordered my opteron 165 from newegg, and it should be here about tuesday or wednesday. I have an a8n-sli premium mobo, 2 gigs of pc3200 ram, and a 7800 gt oc vid card. I am an overclocker, and want to know if anyone else runs a similar configuration. IF so, can i bum some numbers off u because id like to hae something to start with and adapt, rather than blindly guess numbers and spend like 4 hours getting it right. Im looking to get it to about 2.6-2.9 ghz. i have a nzxt nemesis elite case, and it has plenty of cooling, and the stock fan that this cpu comes with is pretty cool with the heatpipes and all. Thanks

2.9Ghz is extremely high for a dual core--that'd eb pushing it.

Start it @ 1.4v @ 278Mhz.
That SHOULD be where you max out at (providing your chip is decent) at that voltage.

Bump the voltage up to 1.5, and then try 311. Prime it. If it works, inch it up slowly.

10 second 165 guide

Also--extremely interested in what stepping Newegg is shipping. Let us know.

what do you mean by what stepping newegg is shipping? Ill leave a complete review of what goes on with this new processor. I hope its good. Im thinking 2.6-2.7 is what i can get it to. people have had reviews about this chip getting to those speeds. What multiplier is best when you get it that high? Any tips on idle/load temps i should keep it between? Right now i have an amd 64 3200 (939) and its at 2.2 (from 2.0) and it stays at 38 idle and not sure what load is. And i dont know what the whole prime thing is. I just o/c and see if theres no blue screen or weird programs and temps look alrite. Very interested however, please tell me more. Thanks

Listen to the man
Best way to elaborate your capabilities. As a starting point, I would not be shy to set it to 2500 (278 HT) @ 1.35/1.4 Volts as TrevorRC recommended...

I have an 0550, it does about 2.6 on stock Vcore. Make sure you have good cooling in your rig too (had it running on an Asus A8N-E but the MOSFETs were reporting insane temperatures, 110 - 120C at load, so I switched to the DFI LP Ultra-D).

On a related topic, anyone know how to short the temperature sensor on the stock Opteron HSF to get it to run at max speed, and control the speed in bios? My stock HSF is having troube going past 3200 RPM, which i think is limiting my overclock (my chip will reach 60C and the damn thing is still spinning at only 3200 RPM, sometimes even slower).

My brother just got a CCBWE 0551 VPMW from the Egg a few days ago. So far it's been dual Prime stable at 2.6GHz@1.45V with an XP-90.

I got my opteron 165 the other day from newegg and I will be putting it together today. Here are more of the specs:

Opteron 165 CCBWE 0550XPMW
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
G.SKILL DDR 550 PC4400 2x512MB
Powercolor X1900XT 512MB PCI Express

I'll let you know how things go later after I overclock and tweak it .

Hi all,
i just got a opty 165 combo from monarch 2 weeks ago and just getting acquainted with it now (my last machine was a athlon xp 2100+ so it was a whole new rig)..
i've yet to do any serious tinkering but was wondering is there any way to find out the steppings of my cpu WITHOUT physically taking off the heatsink/paste -- is there like a windows app that will tell me this (i've seen posts about CPU-Z able to do it, but maybe i'm not looking hard enough cuz i'm not sure where in that program i have to look)?

I ask because the cpu seems to run very hot (speedfan reports 51C on running guild wars alone) this on a moderate OC to 2.35 ghz (260x9).
do admit i've got nothing fancy as far as cooling goes, just a thermaltake A1770 heasink/fan and a 120mm case fan.
Any suggestions on what i should try/do next to lower the temps before OCing any further?
I'm dying to try out at least 2.6 ghz, but want to know if this core is good for that and work out any problems before moving up..

PS. thanks everyone, been learning alot just by "lurking" here this past month, but i'll definitely contribute as i get things going! =)

I had to bump mine up to 1.51V to get 2.6GHz (Same stepping - still priming it)

Failed prime instantly at 2.7GHz at this voltage - and even 1.51 is a little high for my taste...I'm gonna try to run it somewhere under 1.5 if it passes an all night prime session.

well got my opteron up and running. stepping is 0551WPMW stable at 2.6ghz 1.4vcore. it needs 1.55 for 2.7ghz but to me its not worth the extra heat.

no the only way to find the steping is by taking off the HSF. ive bought that same opty 165 combo from monarch (end of Jan), and I finally was able to check last nite that my stepping is CCB1E 0550VPMW. It looks like the majority of us have the same stepping.

Search around using that stepping, it looks quite of few of them were able to reach at least 2.7

Well thats all I can help you with, still waiting for my video card to be shipped. goodluck

All, was able to acheive 2.6ghz on my opteron 165 with about 1.45v.

I am very pleased... it may even go higher.

This is a 0551VPMW from Monarchcomputers

I've got a 0551UPMW here. It went to just above 2.5 on stock voltage with the boxed cooler, 2.7 ROCK SOLID @1.500v. This was an easy 50% OC. I mean like Celeron 300A @450 easy.

I've replaced the stock HSF with a Swiftech Apex ultra. So far it's up to 2907 @1.75v. I'm not sure how much more it can go, but I'm not done with it yet.

GLDM let me know how that goes. I've got the same stepping, 165 ccbwe 0551 upmw, but my vid card arrived doa from newegg (7800gt), so I haven't got it up and running yet. what're your multipliers, fsb, and memory divider numbers?
thanks

DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR. It turns out the 2.9 range was too unstable. I could boot as high as 2925, but superpi or other intensive apps would bluescreen eventually. I've got it stable now at 2835 running on around 1.62v. The mult is 9.0x315. RAM is running at 5/6 which gives about 262.5. I haven't readjusted my RAM timings to the best performance yet, it's still running on auto. I'm losing a bit of RAM speed between 2700 (270) and 2835 (262.5) but I think overall the higher CPU speed will work out and I might be able to make up the difference with tighter memory timings. I've got HT running stable at 4.0x315 = 1260, northbridge and HT bus are stable at their lowest setting (to help keep temps down). I'm getting about 36 idle 41 load on the CPU with a Swiftech Apex Ultra on it.
