Opteron 165 or a Conroe?

When AMD does their price cuts later on this month, I'm hoping it will make the Optys affordable for me but how would an OCd Opty 165 compare to the new Conroes. I have an Epox 9NPA+Ultra mobo and I think this mobo can handle Optys(correct me if I'm wrong) so if the performance between the two cpus is comparable, I could save some cash by getting the Opty. Thanks for any advice.

OK, this isn't 100% certain, but I'm sure I read that the opteron 165 won't be included in any price-cuts and if anything it will actually receive a price increase to emphasize its role as a server cpu(and to spoil the overclockers' fun).

I am most likey going to get the 4200+ or the 4400+ when the price cuts come, both of those chips are fast enough to run everything very well as long as you have a good GPU also. Conroe yes is very nice from what we have seen, but I dont wanna deal with buying new ram a mobo that will be higher priced since they are new and possible BIOS issues when I can get tried and tested hardware already that I know will work well with my X1900XT I have ready.

If you really want to save money and gain appreciable performance, do some research and find vendors that are distributing good X2 3800 steppings. When the price cuts come, I would expect the 3800 to be much more affordable than the 165 - and if you get yourself a good chip, you can typically overclock just as much depending on your hardware. The most obvious difference is the cache sizes but I think that most will attest to the fact that relatively few applications/games take advantage of the extra cache found in the 165. lf you were buying now, I would say go with the 165 since it is only about 30-40 more but since the price drops are coming soon, I think it would be smart to wait and get the best price/performance.

it depends an Opteron 165 is around 328US right now from MonarchPC if I am not mistaken, as well Opteron is not included in the line of price cuts only the desktop, 2x512KB parts are going to be reduced in price, the 2x1MB parts are being discontinued.

I would consider getting a Conroe instead, as you would need to overclock the Opteron 165 to 2.8GHZ minimum to match the stock E6600 processor. Overclocking 1GHZ is a not guranteed item, while if you get a Conroe, stock speed is guranteed, you will have to get new DDR2 memory mind you, but you can sell off your old DDR400 to help with that a tad.

you can get the 165 for $270~ with coupon code (if they still work) at monarch. they usually update their codes often to you may still be in luck. you can find the codes @ hardforums in the hot deals section.

its already been said above, conroe should be the better cpu to get but they are not out yet and with so many thread about launch dates, it makes it hard for people like you that are in the market for a new setup. if this is a new build and you cannot wait then by all means go for it, but if you can wait, it might be better but you going to have to spend more for new hardware, ie. DDR2 ram, mobo and maybe psu.

Monarch seems to be steadily dropping the price on this... Seems to me that with everyone jumping through hoops for crazy (over?) hyped conroe that there may be a log jam of Opterons sitting on lots of shelves. Not to mention that with 939 EOLed those need to be cleared.

I think that opties will be dropping pretty fast, though not like the X2 prices I'd bet. For those like me who don't want to eat new MB and RAM the opty might be a viable upgrade. If you don't already have a 939 MB and are ready for an upgrade then its AM2 or Conroe. Despite the hype I'm not a fan of jumping into first gen hardware so I would wait if possible for at least a few months for the dust to settle and second gen MBs to come out.

Oh and with OEMs eating up all the lesser Conroes, the only ones atainable for a few months are going to be the crazy expensive higher end ones, so I don't think conroe will be a realistic upgrade for mere mortals until the end of this year, unless you want a DELL, in which case you wouldn't be reading this thread

woah, thats some seriouse rambling there...
