Just bought the 4000+ about 3 - 4 months ago at $79. Runs a lot better than my 3200+ Winchester. Clocked to 2.8GHz.

I currently have an Opteron 148 that I can overclock to at least 2.53 Ghz at 1.425V (while being stable in Stress Prime95 2004). I'm mostly a gamer. Would it make sense for me to buy a 165 or 170 and then eBay the 148? I'd want that 165 or 170 to be able to get up to at least 2.7 Ghz (not sure if my mobo can handle doing that with such a low multiplier).

I went from a 3GHz P4 with hyperthreading to the X2 4600+ in my sig and i have to say that my system is definitely much snappier with the dual core. I love the fact that i can now encode dvd's in the background and still do whatever i want with no slowdown like i got on the P4 system.

Not really, unless you're one in a small segment of the market that needs bleeding edge, this chip is fine. Even for gaming, I doubt that a 165 is going to CPU constrain you on too many games with an adequate video card at normal-high resolution.

It might be low budget, but unless you have a specific task that actually needs the faster hardware (C2D), it just means you can build yourself a good system on a low budget. In other words, low budget isn't low performance these days.

That is, unless, you just want to tell people you have a cutting edge build. But I think I'm old enough not to care.

I agree....

people talk alot of crap but if you look at the actual gaming benchmarks between an oc'd e4300 and an oc'd 3800 we are only talking an average of 10fps difference max in most game.s This is significant, but hardly the night and day difference that many make it out to be.

I have read more than once that the larger L2 cache, like the Opty 165 has over the 3800+ X2, means almost nothing in real world use. I would like to see a definitive answer on that though, just out of curiosity.

That's pretty good. I think most of the 165, 170, and the 3800+ the egg has are now the LCB9E steppings. Been real good overclockers for some people.

While I'm here, here are the steppings of mine:

LCB9E 0704TPMW

I don't plan on using this until I'm "bored" of my 144. The bottom of the stock heatsink has a very nice finish, will edit later w/ pics.

I've got mine, but haven't opened it yet. I realize that I might have made a mistake in ordering this. I currently have a 4000+ @ 2.88GHz, and hoped to get the Opteron to at least that speed... but was mixed up in my head thinking that just like the FX chips, it had an unlocked multiplier. My mobo has not, in the past, liked speeds above 250MHz, so that might limit me on this Opteron to 2,25GHz, which for most basic desktop stuff would actually be SLOWER for me.

Ah well... I'll pull it out and try it anyway... who knows, maybe it was the last couple of CPU's that I had that were somehow limiting the FSB.

That's a good stepping, at least based on my results. I got mine last week with the exact same codes and it's running at 2.81Ghz with only 1.35v.

I think the LCB9E is one of their better steppings. I upgraded a couple of people with the LCB9E 3800+ X2. No problem at 2.6GHZ, and could do more with better cooling. One did 2.8GHz at stock volts, but was too hot while dual orthos testing with a AMD heatpipe HSF

People with boards that have trouble at higher FSB, might want to consider the Opteron 170, at 114.99, with a cpu multiplier of 10.

I received an Opteron 165 with the Toledo core. After a lot of struggling with the motherboard in my main system which would only hit a 275MHz bus speed, I moved over to my secondary system which has the same motherboard but was able to hit 320MHz bus speed.

With ~1.450Vcore, I was able to reach 2.95GHz core speed. I backed off to 2.7GHz@1.35Vcore 100% stable running Prime95 torture tests on both cores!

Now I have to swap motherboards between my primary and secondary systems . . .

I'm kinda surprised as well how much hotter this Opteron @ 1.35v (2.8Ghz) runs versus the X2 3800+ @ 1.375v (2.5Ghz) it replaced. I guess the extra cache is the difference?

Word on the street is that AMD will slash CPU prices by up to 40% next month. It will be interesting to see what, if any, effect that has on older 939 parts.

I'm still holding out for a $50 Opteron 165.
