You're hitting 60C non-overclocked and at stock voltage (1.35v)? That's way too hot. At 2.95Ghz and 1.45Vcore (100% CPU utilization on both cores) using a Freezer 64 Pro, my core temp was 60-65C. I felt /that/ was far too warm so I backed it down to 2.7GHz @ stock Vcore and it runs at 50-55C under 100% utilization.

To BlueWeasel, the 2MB cache does make this CPU run hotter than others. It idles about 5C hotter than my old FX-55 and reaches 5-10C hotter under load.

I'm still holding out for a $50 Opteron 165.

Source? Been hearing these price drops since Nov-Dec '06. Of course, it didn't help any that a couple online vendors posted price mistakes of Opterons for less than $50. I'm not going to hold my breath.

i know that's very hot. it idles at around 36C...gaming brings it up to 50C, but orthos shoots temps through the roof! i ordered a ninja and it's on the way. if that doesn't bring temps down, i think i'll have to rma the chip. could be bad contact between the core and ihs.

HOt deal but i can still wait ... i dont really understand why i need anything faster.... games are mostly dependent on video card anyways . I have 3500 oced to 2.5... anyways i like upgrading but really can't afford it for no reason. Like typin this wouldnt be any better on this 165, playng the games i play wouldnt be better either (prob slower) i think im getting old

True enough, but once games start using two cores; single core will be obsolete. This fall, gamers will want 2 cores. Alan Wake, UT3, and Crysis. Will take advantages of a two core cpu.

I am on a 939 3000+ right now, runs my games, mainly CSS

Promo code doesn't work for me. Says only valid for specific programs.

Unsure if I want this. I have a Opty 146 overclocked to 2.4-2.5 GHz. It doesn't go much higher. But I'd have to get at least that clock speed out of overclocking the 165 for this to be worth it. I'm undecided if I should bother upgrading as I don't multitask or do much that would require a second CPU. I'm more limited in new games by my 7800gt at 1680x1050, I think. If I could get 2.7 Ghz or so out of this 165, it'd probably be worth it. I figure I could sell my 146 on FS/FT for $40-45 shipped, meaning I'd pay about $60 for the 165.

How are the overclocks on the later 165s?

ok, i am tempted to pull the trigger on this, but have a question:

I have an FX-55, running at 2.94 GHz... is this worth the upgrade to me to get dual-core that will runn probably 500MHz slower?

well depending on what stepping you get with the opty 165 you could hit same clock if you get good stepping.. but it being dual core i would go with opty. sell your fx-55 and bank money then buy the opty and still have cash

Well... my motherboard seems to like this chip better than most as far as HTT goes. I replaced a 4000+ @ 2.88GHz with this one, and am at 2.75 GHz @ 1.35 (though I don't know if my mobo reports voltages correctly). I idle at around 45C, but I'm not using the stock cooler, I'm using a Sunbeam Silent Whisper heatpipe with a 92mm fan.... would the AMD fan be better or worse?

BTW... I see NO degredation in performance, so I'm guessing that it will only mean more performance in the future as programs become SMP enabled.

Nice.

I have a 3500+ Winchester (single core) running stock.

Would this puppy give me any performance increase if slightly overclocked?

I don't want to have to buy new memory to overclock.

What are the fx-55's going for used?

It's not uncommon for a used one go for around $120 on Ebay. Sell it international and you may get around $150 if you're lucky. Of course, if you guys start flooding the market all that may change.

Are there any good 939 boards left on the market? I'd like to upgrade my HTPC, but I don't have a spare board. Overclocking a bit is a must. Any recs?

You should keep looking at FS/T

DFI 939 boards are gone from egg

if you have to buy a new board and cpu, why not consider P965 and E4300/6300--they run cooler and quieter than NF4/A64 939--perfect for an HTPC. Good AND cheap 939 boards are hard to find, and those with good o/c'ability usually come with a noisy chipset fan. In addition, DDR2 is much cheaper than DDR now.

Yup, if you do NOT already have a socket 939 that you can just drop a chip in. I would not go this route.

You're all probably right. What's holding me back is the fact that I have an AGP Geforce 6200 in there and 1.5 gigs of DDR. Both are replaceable cheaply, though.

Problem is, it's tough to find a cheaper good C2D board. Maybe AM2 is the better bet? Figure a Brisbane X2 and a T550 mobo will cost a bit over $125, right?
