Oh :-/

Maybe I can still hit 3ghz, well, I hope I can anyway

EDIT:
I went over to xtremesystems.org on the "Unofficial Dual Core Opteron Overclocking Thread" and after about 12 pages I found 3 guys with the 0541 -- two of them are at 2.5ghz dual prime stable at ~1.5volts and one guy is at 2.7ghz at ~1.55volts. I suppose with the 0541 I shouldn't expect a 3ghz OC on air, but I'm sure going to try

W/ good cooling, rams, and mobo, I have no doubt you will succeed. Good luck

I found this site below selling 165 for $319 AND IS AVAILABLE.
Also Opteron 146 for $153. Dont buy them from newegg, monarch, ewiz, or zzf. These guys work together cornering the market gauging the price. I mean 2 weeks ago 146 was $153 but all of a sudden $70 increase in all those stores. Hope the link below has enough of them in stock so newegg, monarch etc, sit on it and rot.

http://newsite.pagecomputers.com/store/...&catalog=24&cat=151&subcat=1444&page=1
Edit: found 144 for $153 free shipping.

For $162 shipped, this retail 146 is bar none the best bang for buck AMD chip...

dotto. Also Cheaper and available
I found another store that sells all the above and shipps to Canada too.
Opteron 144 is $144+ $9 shipping. 146 comes to $166 shipped.
Hope newegg and others who jacked up the price realize that other e-stores are not as gready as they are, taking advantage of the demand and ripping off people.

Just an update for the 0541 guys....

I'm still stuck at 2.3ghz. Looks like default voltage won't get me any higher. This chip runs damn hot too. It still could be a board limitation due to the passive chipset cooler on higher HTT, but I'm guessing I'm just out of room on stock volts. Looks to be about on par with the rest of the guys at XS too. I was really hoping for 2.4 on modest voltage. Guess that's out the window

Not like I'm complaining, I basically have an X2 4400+ for $300.

here's my info....

CPU/Stepping: Opteron 165 0541 RPMW
Max Stable OC: 2.3ghz @ 255'ish HTT
Voltage: Stock (~1.35v)
Stability Test: Prime95 large FFT's
Mobo: Asus A8N-SLI Premium (shipping bios, will try to update later)
PSU: Seasonic Super Silencer 460w (24-pin, 25a single 12v rail)
Memory: 2x1gb OCZ Platinum (2-3-2-5, took memory out of this equation, let it run at 100 divider)
Cooling: Thermalright XP-120 w/ Yate Loon 120mm @ 900RPM
Case/Case Cooling: Antec 3700BQE (all grills dremelled out, 4x120mm fans)
Ambient room temp: 75F
CPU Idle/Load temps: 41C/49C

LMK if you guys see anything that might help other than what I've stated.

It could be your mobo, mem timing, bios setting. vcore and many other possibilitties, including the indivdual's skill, luck.
That chip does great on DFI LP UD, as have seen.
this German site shows 0541 @ 2.7 ghz

LOL obviously not, poor shot of sarcasm. :disgust:

The 0530 of what I have seen is performing very well on stock volts, far better compared to other batches (steppings) for that matter, and ?of course? this is the general consensus across the net primarily XS forums, seeing that several people with the same stepping have reached quite high OC?s, with not many people even owning a 0530. Why I am explaining myself to you I don?t know

FYI - I just bought a 165 Retail for $325 from excaliberpc.com and it shipped today. Not backordered and a good price for retail box. I've bought from them before and never had a problem.

Getting mine tomorrow. What's really screwed up is I'm all out of thermal paste so I have to wait a few more days to install it. "So close and... and yet so far!" I ordered one of the OEM ones from Newegg last week.

PSU question: I'm planning on throwing this into a spare case with an Antec Smartpower (the cheap kind) 450W, which says it provides 20A on the 12V, 40A on the +5. Is this sufficient for OC'ing a duallie? I'm not up-to-date on what people are using power-wise these days.

I doubt it's the memory since I run it at well below ddr400 while I was trying the OC. If I had to put money on what it would be I would say that the chipset is getting scorching hot with 250+ HTT or that the chip is just out of room on stock volts. Yeah the guy on the German site hit 2700mhz but that's with 1.52v. I'm not gonna try anything near that. I might go for 1.4v or 1.425v for 24/7 running.

Anyways, I'm doing a fresh OS install here soon so I'll try again after I do that. Also need to upgrade the Premium's BIOS to 1009. Hopefully I'll get a lil better results with that. Will also try blowing a box fan at the mobo to see if maybe it's heat related. If I'm still having issues after that, I'll grin and bear it and go get an Ultra-D. I really don't want to get the DFI though. (Silent PC enthusiast and the Asus has the perfect layout for me.)

Mine came today, CCBWE 0534SPMW. Also an OEM 170 from Monarch; ordered last Wednesday morning. The week doesn't seem to be as great as the 0530's as far as overclocking (at least from what I've read), but I'm still hoping for 2.7 or so...

Still waiting on my motherboard and heatsink though, so won't be able to test until later in the week.

Yup, annoying that AMD is still skimming the market for dual core processors, but what can you do... The profit margins on even a 3800+ are huge; no wonder AMD is doing so well!

Keep me in mind for the sale of the lesser clocking 170 I just want 2.4ghz on stock volts hehe

Well, if Zebo's results are any indication (he had the same week I think on his 165), 2.4 on stock volts shouldn't be any trouble... In any case, unless I hit a solid wall at or below 2.6, I probably won't bother trying to sell it and getting an 0530 (especially since those will probably just get rarer as the days pass). I'll keep you in mind just in case though

It is unbelievable for newegg raising the price of 146 opteron again, gauging an $80 on top of what it costs at other online stores. It is now @ $230. Real nice newegg, for making me feel so confident buying my computer components from you, not feeling cheated.
Boycotting newegg from now on, better believe it. Hope anandtech removes their advertising here.

Just wait... I did the same on my last 3800. They were high, ordered at ZZF, before ZZF shipped, newegg came down, so I cancelled my order and got it from the egg. Way faster shipping. So if they don;t come down, don't order. supply and demand. It doens't make sense to boycott them due to 1 price, they have too good a track record.

you snooze, you loose !
