Some of you may be interested in cheap 165 opteron since it's only $299 and has same cache as expensive 4400.. Sorry for not much but I'm really busy ... just got it today after ordering last night from Mwave. This is with STOCK HSF that came with processor.

Updates:

1. Will run all day long as a 4800++ (2400Mhz) on stock voltage. Unfortunatly on the asrock board I was'nt able to change voltage with any of the bios I tried. 2430Mhz is max OC on 1.3-1.35V... Stock HSF!!!

2. I've been having serious Problems with Epox board.. Temps are insane but I'm igrnoring them anymore since I think they are borked. Just started testing again..
2700 Mhz with 10% overvolt on Stock HSF. Will update in morning.

3. Went to frys and they had no DFI LP NF4 Ultra in stock.. actually all out of all the little black beauties..SLi..ultra..and moddable plain jane NF4. So I did'nt get a board to really push this chip, yet. My Abit cant go stable past about 270HTT and it takes hours to break down my water setup 4200 is in. (one drawback never mentioned about custom water cooling LOL) anyway I'm sure others will contribute here but I did order another board via Mwave tonight... so stay tuned.

I don't know if you guys notice recurring theme here.. Get a quality motherboard!! One that can OC high because you only have a 9x max multiplier to work with with this 165 Opteron... Unless you're happy with 4800+ type performance, then any ole board should do it.

I thought you'd killed your AsRock?

Either way, *drool*

I have to admit i am kicking myself for not waiting a bit longer & getting one of the 165s rather than my X2.

It just never occurred to me there'd be anything lower than the 3800+.

Those Opterons = teh awesomeness though

YGPM as well when you have a sec.

Edit: I just figured out from your desktop screenies that it's the Abit you are running the 165 on, right?

I thought I killed the EPOX which is what you're seeing here. Turns out PSU can't handle current of basically two FX-55+ and 6800 Ultra... found out after diconnecting some drives.. so I just backed down a bit.

The Asrock is OK. It has serious issues because it won't hold volts on reboot. stays 1.3V.. which means max stable was 2.4Ghz.. which is cool I guess since it's a 4800's equivalent.. Andother problem with asrocks is no 1T.. No real biggie either if on budget since smart people buy cheap ram that runs 2T anyway.

Abit has issues too. Like ram slots are too close together heating up ram too hot in my silent setup..and 288 max HTT for me which is cool with a 4200 but may not surfice so well for this chips 9x multi.

I'm getting DFI this weekend..never got it cause chipset fan you can't replace with passive design... I don't like noises so I got to fiqure something out.

Weird.

Most ppl in XS were getting well over 300 HTT with the Abit

Heck even my Neo2 gets way over 300HTT.

Yea but it's not as robust as an after market cooler.. Don't let looks fool you. I'm at 77C right now and it idles at 42... Really light weight with a 70x15mm fan spinning @ 2500 rpm max.

No way...
There's no way it's actually hitting 77C is it?

Temp sensor borked, no?

They all are. Nevertheless this HSF was built to run @ 1.8 x 2.. about 2.4 is max i'd feel confortable with 24-7/

Good price for a tempting chip but imho at this point it's worth waiting to see next gen before spending $300 on dual core.

Really?

You are only @ 1.47V in your 2.6 Ghz screenie.

That would indicate you could run about 2.7 Ghz around 1.5ish, maybe 2.8 Ghz @ 1.55V ?

this will fit if you don't mind running your gtx in the second slot at 8x.

Mwave got some more in stock, I see. Hmmm, strangely shows $305 for me.

Well, zebo, on your advice in the hot deals 3800+ x2 thread, I bought one of the165's. I certainly hope it's as good as is being claimed.

Picked up one of the 165's from mwave to replace my newcastle 3000, now which mb to buy? I have Muskin 222 3200 2x512mb ram, antec truepower 550, raptors galore, and soon to be a new video card but not sure of the mb. Mostly photoshop usage, any thoughts?

whatever you do don't get asrock board.. I can't get any higher cause I can't modulate vcore.. tried every bios out there too. 2430 max on 1.3V - Until I get DFI or something.

(that's with stock HSF BTW..)

I run my DFI nF4 Ultra-D chipset fan at 3400 rpm using Speedfan. It is inaudible at that speed, and is only full out at start up before control kicks in. Funny thing is, it doesn't cool any better at 7000 rpm (stock speed). I replaced the thermal pad with AS5 and have a spare 120mm blowing at low speed on the chipset area. Load temps on the chipset never exceed 47C. Speedfan is setup to start the fan at 52C but it has never started up since the AS5/120 application. The chipset is rated to 70C max with normal operation ok up to 60C. I am a quiet fanatic also, so this arrangement works fantastically for me.....

Welcome to the Opteron 165 club , I can see many more joining the fun

You didnt by any chance catch the steppings on your chip before installation did you?

Mine is CCBWE 0534SPMW, the CCBWE 0530 TPMW are looking quite immense. Over at XS some guy is at about 2.9Ghz stable with 1.45v on a 175

just wondering whether it is from the same batch, so we can compare performance.

Im sure you will be able to hit 2.8Ghz stable with water, question is can you get a lower voltage requirement than me at 1.62V i think maybe yes, i will be running mine permo at 2.8 when i buy my water setup (Which you helped advise on the different parts to get )

Ohh and i think it is time to cream over the NEW DFI SLI Expert

Me thinks at this point if someone wants a SLI board they should go for a dual x16 lane board.

nah thats for avid gamers to gain small amounts IMO, where as the DFI eXpert will bring the best out of your CPU and RAM, granted the asus has 8 phase power, but I don?t think the board will really compare to DFI?s new board, which now has 4 phase over the previous 3 phase

The Asus hit somewhere around 310HTT, which is a huge jump from typical mediocre Asus. What is this new DFI NF4 Expert supposed to bring to the table? A new chipset?
