Maybe it's cause of that, but I have to wonder if maybe it's related to the manufacturing issues they claimed they were having?

My "guess" is it's their entry dual core server processor and they figure the commercial interest won't be high with it what with other Opterons at a faster rate. Most people running servers don't overclock, they buy what they need out of the box.

Additionally, since there's a dual core X2 with about the same functions & close to the same price AMD will not be losing sales from those desiring an entry level bi-core processor so this is to them a relatively easy crossover. I don't think most people looking for a 64 bit AMD look to server chips first.

Because of these things I'm guessing the 165 is a line they feel they can be fiscally better off discontinuing and then have the equipment/employees available to make processors they see with a larger & longer outlook.

IMO I don't think most users will overclock and we're a small but vocal specific interest group but as much as we roar, I don't think AMD or Intel are concerned with our interests. Board & peripheral makers are another story....

I think the chip makers really dislike board manufacturers making it possible for their chips to be used differently than they are sold as but without the board makers no chips would be used so the chip makers have to deal with it. One hand washes the other & the board makers have more to gain by catering to the groups that upgrade the most.

But what do I know...

So they really are diccontinued eh? That's a bummer, I just backordered a 165 off of Monarch. Wonder what I should do now... Probably will just go single core.

If the 165 is really that much of a threat to the 3800+, I think its a wakeup call for AMD to release a 1.8GHz $300 X2...

For the vast majority the 165 isn't clearly the best deal. The extra cache is nice perk, the $300 price tag is highly desirable (obviously the main attraction), however the biggest thing we overclockers care about is its ability to overclock. The fact that these things seem to be doing just as good if not better than X2s certainly isn't keeping us away - however I'm sure there'd be those who would be thrilled with a $300 X2, even if it could only reach overclocks of 2.2GHz...

AMD has no need to release a cheaper X2.

a) why would AMD compete against its own product? It doesnt matter who buys it or what he uses it for, AMD gets the same profit for the CPU's regardless.

b) OEMs will NOT use these Opterons, so they will go for the X2 3800+ and up for their products. Athlon 64 is the "home" use brand, and they will stick to it. OEMs LOVE market segregation.

If the 165 was discontinued then AMD would just take it off its price list. Maybe the retail version is discontinued but I wouldnt bet on it.

The opty 165 there is $298, not $198, else it would be the steal of the century.

Ive been playing with an old Asus A8N-E and a crappy "No-Name" 400watt power supply.

I had some HUGE differences between two different steppings

My 165, a retail box from mwave is a CCBWE 0534SPMW

The chip runs really cool. At 1.5V, I could run around 55C on a salman CNPS70000B-AlCu

I know it isnt the best heatsink, but it works.

NOW, on to the interesting part-

OEM 170 and 175 from monarch

both are CCBWE 0530TPMW and overclock like crazy, but the temps are WAY hotter. I am totally lost on the difference between the cores, but I cant run more than 1.4~1.45v

Regardless, the 170 I was playing with had no problems doing over 2800. At 290X10 it still booted, but had stability issues. I didnt want to push the voltage since I have the DFI expert coming today.

The 165 is by far, the BEST buget chip. The one I had seemed to do 2800 without a hitch.

Mind you, this is on terrible equipment. I am anxious to try on the watercooled rig. I am sure with a nice bump in the vcore, we can see 3gighz on water.

Anyway, the people I have seen with CCBWE 0534SPMW get great results (2.7-2.8) the people with CCBWE 0530TPMW seem to get the insane results.

Hopefully we can keep a little running count, but the CCBWE 0530TPMW seems REALLY promising.

there are some others out there that fair worse from what I have seen.

1000mhz overclock on the 165 opteron is just, well, nothing short of amazing.

That sounds really promising. I have a 170 OEM on the way from Monarch, and I hope it's the same stepping/week as yours and overclocks like that!

I wish I could take my CCBWE 0534SPMW higher, but air cooling (XP-90) is holding me back.

1.4v @ 2.4ghz, 50c load
1.5v @ 2.5ghz, 55c load

I didn't want to push it much higher because of my temps, but i've seen several people with the 0534 get up to 2.7-2.8. I'll probably be running 24/7 @ 2.4ghz. One day I shall build a water rig

Hey everyone, I just registered here but I have been reading these forums for a little over a week and a half now, and this is a really good place. I was looking at building an Opteron 165 based system for a while, and when I saw the prices drop, I jumped on the oppurtunity. I just got my Opteron 165 from monarch yesterday (paid $290), heres the info on the chip:

AMD Opteron
OSA165DAA6CD
CCBWE 0541RPMW

I haven't seen that stepping before, but then again I'm relatively new to this.
I bought a DFI Lanparty UT SLI-DR motherboard, a Zalman CNPS9500 LED 95mm heatsink, a tube of Arctic Ceramique, and 2gb (2x1gb) of OCZ Platinum DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200, 184pin). I have also bought the rest of the system (lian li case, hdd, drives, etc), but they aren't really important at this time.
I was wondering if anyone has any tips or information that may be usefull when it comes to overclocking the 165. I've never overclocked before, but I have a friend online who is going to help me, and a friend from college who is experienced in OCing who can be there to make sure I don't screw up.

My goal is to hit 3ghz on just air, with the hardware listed above. I think it's certainly possible, what do you guys think?

Well 3Ghz on the 165 is extremely tough - the 1XX opterons seem to get there more easily. From what I've read most of the 165's are getting 2.5-2.8 scores with a few exceptions. Sounds like you got a good setup though - GL!

What do you mean by 1XX opteron? Do you mean 17X or 14X?

Just got my 165 yesterday. CCBWE 0541 RPMW as well here.

Quick results...

2.3ghz at stock Vcore before crash. It didn't just fail Prime though, it flat out black screened. While I have pretty good hardware, there are a few things to consider here....

1.) I use the Asus SLI Premium, the chipset was SCORCHING. Think the passive chipset cooler isn't taking kindly to OCd settings.

2.) Temps were not that bad at all... 48C dual prime, and I took RAM out of the equation to find the max CPU right off the bat. While I did skip trying to find the Premium's max stable HTT, I have a feeling finding that out is going to get to the bottom of my OC results. Might just have to go DFI.

Yes, although its $58-100 more expensive, however still much cheaper (by about $100) than the 4400+, that is if you want a dualcore K8 with the extra cache.

I just ordered (8:15pm PST) an OEM 165 from Newegg for $293 shipped. I immediately went back to see about another one and got an out of stock message. Guess I was lucky to get one...

Even a 170 would be decent. It's just not quite as good a value as a 165, it is rather good.
