Boycotting newegg from now on, better believe it. Hope anandtech removes their advertising here.

I stopped shopping at newegg over a year ago.. They suck!

1. Half the crap you can't even RMA anymore but directly to manufacture
2. Prices arn't lower
3. Price gouging on hot stuff..not that that's a bad thing but when everyone else is'nt it is.

The only reason people use newegg is they are lazy won't switch and like thier sweet database and wider selection than anyone.

Personally I like small stores.. guys trying to break in.. tank guys..crazyPC etc. The offer a personalized level of serive you can't get from a newegg or monarch.

If I buy from anyone big it's mwave cause they are cheapest (and awesome CS BTW)

OK so I started the overclock tonight, I'm up to 2.61ghz, and it seems stable (still only like 34 degrees C). I ran the benchmark on prime95 3 times each per core (both cores at once). When I got to about 2.4 I had to up the voltage to 1.4v. My ram proved to be a ah heck, and I have all the timings set to auto for it (which brings it to like 266ddr 2.5cas, really cruddy timings). Once I get the processor where I think it'll work best, then I'll focus on the ram.

good news that you got it to 2.6. Maybe mine isn't such a crappy OC'r after all. I really need to quit fiddling with this Asus junk and get a DFI...

Hey Bricktop, is that your idea of prime? The benchmark to test stable? Usually it's best to run at least small FFT torture test for a couple hours..perferably 4-6. BTW- what cooling?

No, thats not my idea of stable, I just stopped for the night because I had other things to do. I need to get my memory back to good timings before I can worry about the other tests. I use Arctic Ceramique and a Zalman CNPS9500LED. It's all in a Lian Li 65b case that came with 4 fans, I'm not sure what they are rated at but they seem fine. If you have any suggestions though about this stuff let me know, as I'm quite new to this. Thanks

Ordered my 165 this morning for Monarch and I got my tracking shipping confirmation this evening. Sounds pretty in stock to me. Yay!
Now lets just hope it works...

Wow Zebo I gues you jinxed me
I woke up this morning, turned on the pc, and the BIOS said Bad CMOS Checksum, reverting to defaults. So now I am back to 1.8ghz and 1.3v. All my ram is back to normal as well. I guess I shouldn't have spoken so soon ...

I will start over again after I recover from my hangover

Thank you anandtech for removing newegg.com from advertizing here. I have been checking the review sections(memory, cpu, motherboard, etc..) and I dont see newegg on top of the pages listing their price on the product being reviewed by anandtech. This is a step in right direction, warning the online stores, price gouging is a no no and at the end they are the real loosers. Does it paye to jack up the price 50% just because the item is in high demand? $77 on top of already retailed price (opteron 146 from $153 to $230), that is more than 50% increase in profit.
not very smart newegg.

Hi, I new to overclocking the AMD and I installed an opteron 165 on an evga sli nforce4 motherboard with 1gb of dual channel patriot PDC1g3200llk cl 2-3-2-5 memory.
In the bios settings I am not sure what all the dram timing settings mean as I only used Intel chips before now.
The optimzed dram settings do set the timings right with 2T clocks. I did not have this option before what is 1t vs. 2t.
Also HTT settings Auto-1000mhz?

Anyway I just want to some mild overclocking, nothing fancy. What OC setting on the evga should I set?
Spread spectrum is disabled.
There are a lot more amd OC settings than intel that is for sure.

Oh my 165 is ccbwe week 36 model from Monarch arrived last week installed yesterday and is cooled by a zalman resorator.

Well, after much procrastination I got it 100% stable at 2.7ghz at 1.568v. I think that's as far as I will take it.

My luck is not as good. I was trying a 249 clock with no over voltage and the evga Nforce4 motherboard just ignored it and kept me at 1.8ghz. So I upped the cpu voltage to just 1.4 and now I can't boot at all and will probably have to reset the cmos (I hope that is the worst of it).
Any tips? I am new to overclocking but really need to get the most out of the 165 that I can to edit HD video with it.
Works fine up to 231 clock with no other setting changes for a 2.0ghz total... motherboard is auto setting the memory to 2.5-3-4-8...

I found that my 165 went to about 2.5ghz easily with no extra volts, but to squeeze the other 200mhz out of it I had to really step of the voltage (stock is 1.3 I'm at 1.568). I'm not using the same motherboard as you, so your numbers will be different, but I don't know why you can't go past 2ghz.

Hey guys, I'm an A64 overclocking newbie and I just picked up this cpu with an asus a8n-sli premium board. Got 2x512 ocz platinum rev2. Just started OCing using the guides on this forum and guru3d. Isolating the CPU, I'm able to get a fsb of 281 at stock volts, 9 hrs dual prime95 stable, with cpu temps around 52°C. This morning I tried to up the vcore to 1.4V and so far it seems stable at 285 but temps are around 55°C. I haven't gone through the rest of the OC like doing memory and then consolidate, but with these temps am I safe or should I stick with stock vcore? I am only using stock cooling at the moment and have an Antec Sonata II case. Thanks!

I am new to overclocking in general.
I know how to make a good stock rig but when it comes to choosing my cuurent chip or going with the opteron 165 what should I choose?
Which is actually faster an FX chip or the opteron165 or a AMD64X2--

Here is what I have Can someone make suggestions
Current-( I Know it needs work but I'm working it)
Asus A8N-SLI deluxe Bios 1016
1Gig 2x512 Dual channel cl2 memory PC3200 CL2-3-3-7-1T (no Name)
2x BFG7800GTX
1x BFG600WattPS
2x Maxtor 16megcache 250gig SATA in Raid0 stripe on Nvidia Controller
2x WD Raptors 36gig in raid 0 stripe on Nvidia controller SATA
3x DVD16x/8 BenQ Burners (1620) PATA
1x mobilerack with IDE(Slave) 80 gig PATA
1x WD 80gig SATA on Sil Controller
2X WD 200gig SATA raid 0 on SIL controller

I am new to this and would like to choose a new CPU Should it be opteron165 @1.8Ghz?
Or should I do AMD Fx57? or any AMD64X2 chips?
What are the best timing settings for the M/B I have?
Please help as I am really trying to set this puppy up for extreme gaming with a limited budget

Anyone have any Opty 165 benches going up against some X2s and whatnot? Im figuring the opty wins in most cases, probably loses in gaming to OC single cores.
