Opteron 170 cancled!

I heard news that the Opteron 170 will stop production within the month! I wanted to buy one for my gaming rig in June. What do I do? Buy one now? Wait and see? This is bad news.

The Opteron 170, I believe, has been cancelled for the most part, so it will become harder to acquire as the time passes (and perhaps more expensive due to supply vs. demand. And yes, it IS better than the X2s as it's essentially the same thing (with more cache) and has been known to overclock quite well (same with the 165 if you plan to overclock).

Instead of "heard this, I heard that" bs, how bout you post some links so we can better understand where this is coming from to make better judgements? If you just "heard it from a friend" then that doesn't start you off well...find out where he got the information first.

Actually, I think all of the Opteron 1xx just went OEM only, with the latest AMD pricing adjustment in the last few days:

Oh and I doubt that the production is halted in any way, any means. Hell, indeed a new model (185) just started showing in the market. They had to erase the prices on their site due to the disastrous price discrepancy (between MSRP and market price) of 1XX series of Opterons.

Then say so next time. It really helps, if it's just 'rumors' on message boards chances are it's just that - rumor and speculation. If its a website then maybe there's some credibility to it. Chances are it's just a false panic.

X2s CURRENTLY (06XX's) are overclocking just as well if not better than the Opty's.

Meh, cache means very little.

It basically equates to an extra 125 MHz in A64 terms.

Nothing to get too excited about.

The 4400+/4800+ have 1MB per core, the 4200+/4600+ have 512kB per core.

Yes indeed. But the above posters claiming that Opterons have more cache are only right half the time when they don't specify which X2 chips they are comparing to.

If I was you, I'd grab it ASAP. Its not official yet but the entire line of 100's would be cancelled for socket 939 and 940. No one really wants a 1 way system anymore; the server market is hot for 2 and 4 and 8 way systems.
