not just the x2 but the entire line - a 3000 has 512KB cache, the 144 has 1MB cache and the same speed, etc

Nah, every NF4 board from DFI will do 300+ FSB. Most of them do 320 - 340 FSB with some tweaking. 323 x 9 = 2.9 ghz, 334 x 9 = 3.0 ghz

this looks like a better upgrade option than going conroe and plopping down an extra 200 for ddr2. anybody got a good deal on an overclocking mobo? newegg has dfi nf4 boards ranging from 70's to 120 for non sli boards...and i cant tell the difference

Not everyone has a DFI board.

How realistic is it to think a chip spec'ed. at 1.8 is going to run at 2.9/3.0? Not very likely I'd guess.

I just bought a 165 and i'll be thrilled if it will hit 2.6 or so with my XP-120 cooler.

These have a higher possibility of overclocking because server line processors have purer silicon and have a higher quality control.

You can hit 2.5 wihtout much trouble. That is what my Opty is running at and I did not try to go much higher. Although mine is a Toledo, not a Denmark 165.

Very Realistic. Opties OC like mad. Just takes a nice mobo/mem and some time. Most do 2.7-2.8 no sweat. I was at 2.9 on air with my 148. Mach 2 helped a little, but not much. I am over 3Ghz now, though.

IS the 170 the only one with a 10x multi?

265's are if you're gonna have two CPUs, while most of us just have one CPU. If you only have one CPU you can just get a 1XX Opteron.

I realize that, but quad core ~$500 + motherboad/ram seems pretty smokin to me!

Smokin' as in all the extra power you'll be pulling from the wall? Or smokin' like the money you'll burn on a dual socket mobo and Registered memory? Or smokin' like the bowl you'll light up after your first bout with OC/driver issues?

If you'll actually use all 4 cores, it might be worth it.

If you overclock, or if you don't overclock chances are your 4200 will perform just as well if not a little better than the opteron 170 in almost all apps. If it were my $180 I would have bought the 4200 too.

My 165 will run 2.9 ghz @ 1.44 volts on the core rock stable (but I'm on water). It'll do 3.0 @ 1.5 volts. Nothing special about the chip, just a OEM from Monarch back in May. My 146 before that would run 3.1 ghz. These Opti's overclock like crazy.

I believe so.
165 9x
170 10x
175 11x

Oh yea, I just picked up a 175. Replacing a 148 (that was OC'ed to 2.7 with a voltage DROP).

Wow, the Opteron 165 deals are tempting ... sooooo tempting. Will these prices last, or do you think this significant price drop is just temporary?

I prefer to order from newegg (the 165 is out of stock until 10/2 it seems), but mwave has the 165 for $157.59 in stock and I've had good experience w/ mwave in the past.

This is a bit off topic, and I know how people love to endlessly discuss PS's, but is my Antec NeoHE 430 up to the task of an Opty OC'ed to ~2.4GHz? I've also had my eye on the SilverStone Element 500w (ST50EF-PLUS) after reading this review by JonnyGuru.

Take care all!

LOL

Higher quality control, yes.

Purer silicon - no. They are all grown on the same starting Si wafers, using the same Fab equipment. The Opterons simply have to meet a higher quality control spec compared to the normal Athlons.
