Im looking either the single core 146 or the dual core 165. I WAS going to go with DFI, but they don't support Opterons....for some reason.

So does anyone have a list of motherboard manufacturers/models that DO support S939 Opterons?

there's tons of people at dfi-street with opterons.

officially it might not supported but it should work.

Officially supported and functioning fine are different beasts. I can also attest that the MSI Neo2 works fine with the opteron 165 with the latest bios, even though it's not officially supported.

Yup, the Tyan K8E is a workstation/server motherboard and the only one that has official support for Opteron s939 single and dual cores.

The only time I think it would be an issue is in a case where warranty service is requested. And then only if the mobo manufacturer inquired as to what CPU is being used.

Now where are those cheap $90 Sempron 939's when you need it.

I'm pretty sure AMD has a tighter leash on what can be called officially supporting S939 Opteron vs A64. They probably make mobo manufacturers jump through hoops and maybe even pay them money to be considered official with S939 Opterons.

So you won't see too many enthusiast level boards officially supporting Opterons, but I'd be surprised if they don't work in any S939 board. Much like there was never really official support for XP-Mobiles in Socket A boards, but if you buy a Socket A board and an XP-M it's gonna work.

Very good point. It's really just a X2 anyway so if you board supports X2's it will support 939 Opteron. Official? probably not but that's just a formaility in this case since it's totally fuctional like an X2

One point anyone buying Tyan board will not be disipointed. It clocks decent and is built to last with server grade stuff on it. 250 is max HTT so don't expect great overclocking but nice stable system.. same board is used inside SUN workstations.

Edit: Empty post

Sorry for hijacking, but I have seen plenty of questions regarding the opterons vs x2s, and I wanted to ask a similar question:

For general use, gaming, compiling, surfing, whatever, which will be faster:
an x2 4400+ - 4800+
or 2 dual-core opteron 165s? (yes, I know that the MB is expensive)
Anyone have 2 dual-cores, and have any problems with them?

Are 940 opteron 165's even available? Or is someone making double 939 boards?

At any rate, I doubt you'd see much difference between 4 cores vs 2, outside of things like encoding and running database servers.

You're thinking of the 265 (2 for 2 physical dualcore CPUs). There are no double socket 939 boards, you need 940 for that.
