Most of the 146's are 05xxFPAW, but a few are 05xxGPAW. Is there any real difference?

You should also consider the first 4 letters. I.E.: CABNE, CABYE, CABGE, CAB2E, CACJE, and so on.

CAB2E 0546FPAW is horrible, from what I've heard. Indeed, if you go to eBay, you'll see whole bunch of that stepping.

GPAW stands for something. Almost all AMD64 cpus are xPxW, the 1st and 3rd letters correspond to the day of production and hour of production (respectively). There is some system where A corresponds to Monday etc. etc.

So, by this system, a GPAW would be produced on a Sunday, and an FPAW would be produced on the day before it, Satuday.

Yea, it seems most of the available 146's are CAB2E's.

Please define horrible. I thought they would still routinely get to 2.7-2.8, just not up near 3.0 like the CABYE's. Is this not the case?

Not mine. I have 146 CAB2E 0546 FPMW and overclocks to 3ghz.
am waiting for 2x512 TCCD and watercooling to arrive and planning to overclock them further. Right now i am using cheap DDR550 2x256 and could not use divider w/ them.
The spec on these hynix chips says will not underclock and can only overclock about 5 mhz.
I will post my results w/ new rams and watercooler.

How much voltage you putting through it?

Well, I have no first hand experience with that specific stepping. I said "from what I've heard".
I would define 'horrible' as something like 2.4~2.5GHz MAX STABLE @ stock voltage for single core Opterons. (Wow.. what a difference a year make!) At 2.4GHz Max (stock Vcore), the clock will probably max out around 2.6~2.7GHz. Don't get me wrong. It's still near FX57 and plenty fast for everything. Just not as fast as other Opterons.

Also, there seem to be good CAB2Es, but I was talking about CAB2E 0546FPAW. Does anyone have this stepping? I read a couple of people complaining @XS.

You know, I didnt realize that cpuz did not show the vcore. sorry.
it was at 1.55v
I did get it stable @ 2.9 ghz w/ a single stick of TCCD (512), when i had them. those PDP XBLK have been RMA'ed and soon will arrive and will test this opteron w/ them. mean time any chance I get I burn in the cpu till then.
I think any FPMW stepping have turned out good.

I got this stepping Cpu could do 2.9ghz but mine wasn't stable. i run it at 2.6 now 1.4v i dont notice any difference between 2.6-2.8 except in benchmarks, if you got good memory then you could probably get tighter timings and it'll feel alot faster. But my i havent lowered my multiplier to 9x like others have said to get 3ghz..my memory wont go past 288fsb,and its only rated at 263. I had gskills which were even worst. On my friends setup he would do 320 on the same gskills i had so im assuming i got bad sticks since these were the 440 chips or something was wrong with my system. bios or cpu. tried like 6 different bios, and best one was 623-3 for the memory i have, it wouldnt run well on the other bios. SO thats my exerience. Anyone who can get 3ghz with CAB2E 0546fpmw let me know what your setup is.

Well I would agree that 2.4 stable would definitely not meet my expectations. Hard to call that "horrible", but I understand what you mean now.

I am in need of a CPU for my second system, so I was planing on OC'ing a 146 to 2.7 or so and put my 3800 Newcastle in the second system.
But with basically all the 146's gone except for Ebay, maybe I should look at getting a 148. With a 148, I would think 2.7 is a pretty reasonable expectation no matter which stepping, right?

I have that stepping and run it rock solid @ 2.8 with 1.45v

I am using Asrock Dual SataII. The board gives me great results. I had my A64 3000 Venice overclocked to 2.76ghz w/ this mobo. You might want to burn-in the cpu at stock speed and vcore for 24 hrs and then try oc again.
here is the download for cpu burn in
