Optical mice locking up.

This is my third Logitech optical mouse. Now this one, just like the others, is starting to lock up and (virtually) makes the buttons stuck. Why does every optical mouse (I've had) do this?

Is it wireless or does it have a wire ?

Suggest, if it is wireless, find the nearest trash can and throw it in, then go get yourself a mouse that have a wire on it. Same thing generally applies to anything else that is wireless.

My wireless mouse never locks up, even in gameplay. No big deal unless you are playing a FPS.

I prefer wireless mice over wired mice for desktops and vice-versa for notebooks..

Never had one lock up on me before.

Don't worry, I literally did throw my wireless mouse in the trash. However these were 3 wired mice. I remember having this problem on my old PC too. The USB plug is firmly inserted into the socket. It really pisses me off, when I'm doing some trick jump maps in Quake, the mouse will lock up and shoot out 5 rockets then I have to start all over again. Looks like I'm going to drop another $40 on a new MX518 then. I don't remember the model of the first one that locked up for me, but I know an MX300 did and also the one I have now (MX510) does. I've found that they all have a lifespan of about a year until this happens. The locking happens about once every 2 minutes.

Maybe your USB bus or whatever is locking up? Are you having similiar problems on other computers?

I have a TV tuner on the same USB bus with no issues whatsoever. The MX300 mouse locked up on my old PC also. Maybe I should hook up this MX510 right now to my old PC and try it? One problem: my old pc is currently inoperable...some power issue where I turn it on, I hear a termite noise and my whole power strip goes out, lol. don't ask... right now I'll be happy if I can get a working mouse. Actually the MX500 hooked up to my old PC is perfectly fine as far as I know. Maybe the cord has sufferred too much wear and tear? I'm the person you'd take it to to get it "certified" if you know what I mean. I've already screwed up the cords of two Logitech headsets and ripped the cord (just internally) out of my Sennheiser headphones (which my dad fixed), so I wouldn't be surprised if it was the cord that was actually the problem. The headphones were different though, because I think I rolled my chair over the wires on those. The mouse wire is no where near my chair, so I wouldn't have run that over. The mouse wire is a little tight (thanks to the short cords they come with), but it's not that bad. I can only lift it a foot out or so until the cord catches against my desk where it's routed to my PC.

xtnight, for some reason I can't access your rigs through the link. By any chance, are you running an ASUS SLI MOBO?

that happened to me on my old computer. After I replaced the guts, the problem was fixed.

Yup. ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe on my main PC. Hmmm is that a problem?? (My second/old pc was also an ASUS mobo). I'm not using SLI on the first PC and the second PC is an Intel i865PE chipset P4P800 Deluxe so it doesn't have SLI either.

Sorry I took so long getting back to you. I had the identical problem with my ASUS A8N-SLI (non-deluxe) and the Logitech MX 1000. Changing USB ports didn't help. Reinstalling the mouse didn't help. No other problems with any other USB devices--just the mouse. The same problem also occurred with a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 and a wired Intellimouse Explorer (so not an interference problem). Same problem running in SLI or single graphics card mode.

I tried reinstalling my USB root hub using device manager and the problem continued to occur. I got so frustrated that I actually wiped my drive and did a fresh install of Windows and apps. Same problem.

Finally cured the problem by plugging my mouse into the USB port on my Dell 2405FPW monitor, which is plugged into an external USB hub, which is in turn plugged into my additional USB ports in the back of the chasis (not the ports that are directly connected to the MOBO). That's right, the further I went from the ASUS MOBO, the better my mouse works.

I can only conclude that this is an ASUS problem and it's one of the primary reasons why my next MOBO is going to likely be manufactured by MSI, Gigabyte or DFI.

Wow. Thanks...I'll try and get an external USB hub then. But the thing is, getting a new mouse helped. I wonder why that is?

I think it's the mouse. I have a similar problem with my MX700, and regardless of what computer I plug it into, it still occurs.

Weird. It seems like it's not happening nearly as often now that I plugged it in to another USB port (same hub).

You might try a ps2 adapter and plug the mouse into the ps2 port and see if that stops the lockups.
