ok i noticed that some opticals cost like 50+ dollars....my question is, are they better? or are you paying that much for a brand name?

I believe so, just upgraded my aging M$ Optical to a "$50" Logitech MX510.

However you don't have to spend $50, $30 will do for now...

Granted it is obvioulsy corded, but a lot of gamers prefer corded mouses anyways.

well, i don't see how anyone can use a ball mouse now a days. you can spend $20-$30 for a cheap 2 button cordless optical and that'll be light years over the ball mouse.
but mice like the mx500 or it's siblings really are nice.

Logitech MX series is really nice, So are the Razer Boomslang mice. Couple it with a nice mouse pad, a hard surface one ( fUnc, RatPad GS...etc)

The more expensive opticals are more responsive with better resolution. I have a Logitech MX1000. It uses some laser instead of an LED. It will read on any surface and has 1000DPI resolution. So does the new Razer mouse.

Is there much of a difference between MX510 and MX1000? Not from what I can tell, and certainly not worth 2x the cost. Corded or not...you still gotta sit in front of the monitor...when I played cordless, I thought "why?". Do the MX510, it's a great mouse.

still won't do a mirror

Never tried it.......But Ok......EVERYTHING BUT A MIRROR!!!!

It's cool when my desktop gets cluttered and I can move the mouse to any surface near by (even my pant leg) and accomplish my task without clearing off a spot first. Or I can easily move it to my left hand. whatever...the freedom is great along with the responsiveness and high resolution. I'll never go back!!!! And the battery lasts for weeks and it has a charger stand that recharges it quickly when needed. Read the reviews....

so those mx510's for 25 bux is a pretty good deal right?
also, lets says you got a generic brand mouse, but the DPI is 800,
that would be the same as a $25 800dpi mx510, right?

I LOVE my MX700 cordless, but the MX510 is fine. I don't have any personal experience, but I've heard from a lot of gamers that if you go any lower the response time will go too far down for gaming.

The MX510 is perfect for me. Wires don't bother me and it is a very nice mouse. Wireless mice are a bit heavy compared to my MX510 too which I don't really like

Wireless mice always seem to have slightly more latency in thier response, but that could just be placebo effect. Either way, I still prefer chorded optical. Right now I'm using a Kensington PilotMouse optical, which I like.

The MX1000 uses some RF signal that's supposed to be more responsive. Like I said, me and my kids are heavy gamers and notice no latency at all. I think all the reviews I have read show likewise (Tomes Hardware, CPU Mag etc)

Optical mice are ridiculously good. Don't get suckered in by any other posters; a $15 OEM Logitech is about as good as it gets - imo those extra buttons just get in the way; the only time I used them was when I accidentally hit one and it f*cked up my web browsing :frown: You'll develop a pathological hatred for ball mice within a month.

An awsome mouse!
Remember, you get what you pay for.
Watch out for those cheap Intellishit wireless mice, because they really do suck.

you need a good mouse in order to be a great player in games, especially online fps's. i used to have a old Logitech optical from a few years ago and got creamed. Now with the MX510 I have gotten much much better.

so yes, a great mouse does really improve your game
