In the old days of the ball mouse I had no problem cleaning up the ball portion of the mouse and never ran into button response problems. However, I've had this MX700 for a couple of years now and the right mouse button is really starting to suck. Sometimes it works fine and other times it doesn't work at all. Sometimes it actually thinks you're pressing it over and over and over even though you have it firmly pressed down.

Anyway, is there a good way to open this thing up and clean the contacts or is it pretty much shot?

Hey,
I just started having this problem a couple of days ago as well. When I right-click it would sometimes register, sometimes flicker kind of, or sometimes work like a charm. It's still useable to browse stuff, but I definitely can't play games on it. I've had this mouse, like you, since I got my computer which was around three years ago. heh.

I'm thinking of just throwing out the mouse, because the whole wireless thing, while seems nice, is really just a big headache, for me at least. The batteries seem to want to go out at the least opportune time.

However, I'm not really sure what mouse to go with. The MX518 is relatively cheap compared to the G5. And I really want to get a corded mouse this time. So what I was wondering is, is the G5 worth the extra money over the MX518?

I'm not even familiar with those two options. I love having a wireless mouse but I'm kind of with you on this. One thing you might want to try is to reseat the batteries inside of your mouse. I did this after posting the message (while searching for a way to open up the mouse) and the button is working a lot better now. It's worth a shot at least.

I need to bump this ancient thread. I finally popped the mouse open but the right button still kind of sucks. Has anyone else encountered the death of a mouse button and been able to come up with a fix? I don't want to replace this thing if I can help it because I have yet to find an affordable replacement that also has the side buttons.

my mx700 has this same problems after a year. If u're really desperate, u might want to try pop open the black plastic switch that handles the "clicking" (see the picture). Be careful when doing this, because inside the black plastic box is actually a small spring plate, which can easily lost when you opened the plastic. After you open it, you might want to straighten the spring (in most case it should be bent after a years or so usage) so when the white little plastic gets pushed, it shorts with the spring plate easier. At least that's how i remembered it lol... i opened it about two years ago... so i'm sorry if i got the things a bit mixed up, but when u see things inside the black plastic, you should know how it works.

A word of caution, when i opened the black plastic box for the first time i don't know exactly what's in it, and after putting everything back, the button doesn't make any more clicking noise... i.e when you click it, it doesn't actually give a "clicking sound" just like a muted clicking, i'm not exactly sure what i'm missing, but nevertheless the button is fine now. So unless u don't have any other way, i'm not recommending opened it...

cheers.
