i have an "explorer" and i USED to have an Everglide pad but i got annoyed w/ the clanking sound it made (too hard).

so now i have a Func 1030 and i can't get over how great it is.

I have a very smooth desk which is great for my Explorer. I move the keyboard and mouse around a bit (I do other stuff on my desk), and it's comfortable not having to deal with a big mouse pad when space is at a premium. I can also move the mouse around wherever I want.

I use the Everglide Giganta mouse pad it rocks!!!! Not cheap but not too expensive and where gaming is concerned I want an excellent surface for my optical mouse.
Dust is not a problem since I give it a weekly spray with some good furniture polish(MR.Sheen).

IntelliMouse Optical here..

Using a fUnc Surface 1030. If the rubber base wasn't warping as bad as it is, it might be the best mousepad I've used, but I'm looking at alternatives now; unless I could get Actlabs to send me another one. :[

i use an el cheapo as well. I've got an everglide, but it tracks poorly, and wears down mousefeet :/ Its a white one though, not meant for optical mice.

Cloth pads all the way, not as smooth though. Tracks perfectly however (i use gray), one problem: it gets dirty.

Any cleaning tips? Or just lay down the 50-150 cents for a new one?

You may want to use a mousepad for the Logitech Cordless Optical, anyway. According to the documentation, a lighter surface will lower the battery drain, since it has to put more power into the LED in order to track on dark surfaces. I bought the lightest mousepad I could find, for that reason.

I use a 3M precise mousing surface and I'm pleased with the performance, the only gripe I have is that after i rinsed it after spilling soda on it, the edges curled up.

Using a func now, smooth side. I never was able to get the damn rubbet mat to fit properly. Otherwise awesome pad.

Everglide was too rough and got gunky after a while.

3m drags so much, it is the absolute worst for an optical mouse.

I'll never use a mousepad w/optical... it seems so silly to do such a thing.

Spoken like a non-gamer ,gamers especially hardcore never go online without one .

I have had my best luck with a simple yellow legal pad, gives me something to write on, and there are 100 mouse pads there, each new and clean

I also had terrible luck with muck getting on my mouse feet. After checking out mouse skates or whatever I found a better solution. I have some of the Scotch Super Clear shipping tape. I put a small piece of that on each of the plastic mouse feet, that stuff stays nice and clean, gives the mouse a super slide on my legal pad. It does get a little scratche dup after about 3-4 months, ai just peel the old off and put new tape on.

I use a mousepad for my MS Intellimouse 3.0. The only reason I use one is because my table is not perfectly smooth. So, sometimes as I move the mouse over the table, the mouse cannot take pictures properly. Plus, I got so used to having a mousepad that it is hard for me to adjust to not having one.
