Hey folks...I live in the Bergen County area of Dumont, NJ and I currently am using Bell Atlantic's InfoSpeed DSL which just merged with Verizon and I have noticed that my good 640/90 speed has been a bit rocky this last month and I am getting pings in games like Quake III and Unreal Tournament that are flucating quite a bit like between 70ms-230ms and these pings were never this bad before. I am really getting upset with my service now and am wondering if anyone can recommend Optimum Online cable by Cablevision. I'm getting desperate for a good , low cost High Speed ISP that offers pretty consistent or at least stable pings....Is this too much to ask for? I went to DSL REPORTS.com and tested my Ping rate using their online DR.PING utility and I noticed that my speed compared to alot of others in my area is pretty bad, so it seems like there IS hope...btw besides a brief review of Optimum Online Cable service....can someone suggest something I CAN do to minimize high flucuations in my ping...or am I poop out of luck with this?

Is there anything I should look OUT for when taking the plunge into CABLE from someone who is so used to DSL.....Am I making the wrong/right decision??

thanks all!!!

I can speak from experience , here is CT I had OptimumOnline and well... it sucked.
Don't be fooled, it is part of the @Home network where the only things you can count on are poor bandwidth and frequent email outages.. Since you already have DSL why not shop for another provider since you certainly have connectivity to the local CO .
I killed my cable service and went to DSL . Kudos to SNET for giving me good service. Heck they even credited my account a full months use when they were having some problems which left me without service for 5 hours ! @Home would never do that !

if you look at dslreports.com speed test logs. OPT online has the fastest connections avail anywhere in the americas everytime i get something sent from one of them, its lightning fast. (150k/sec to 200k/sec my max)

I have Optonline on LongIsland. Yes true, some of Optonline WAS @Home, but not anymore, they split up. I host a 12 player Counter Strike server 24x7 with my cable with no problems. I have had downloads as fast as 600k when using Download Accelerator. Upload is limited to 120k.

What I am trying to say is, go for it

I have to agree, I have optimum online here in CT and it is fast. I've gotten downloads at 200 Kbytes/sec and higher from certain sites. The connection is reliable, i have no complaints.

I've had Optimum here on Long Island since 1998. Originally the network was horrible, they used the old LanCity modems that desynced 20 times a day and had packet lose constantly. They have since upgraded and use a DOCSIS standard with 3com modems, which are much better. The theoretical bandwidth caps are 1Mb up (128KB, B is Bytes) and 10Mb down, although the 3com modems only do 3Mb's so you wont ever realize the potential. Anyway, I easily get 400-600KB downloading, uploading is usually decent from 80KB to around the theoretical 128KB limit. To clear something up, thats KB, most of @Home is caped at 128Kb. Latency (pings) range from excellent to decent to horrid. Optimum seems to maintain links to UUNet(Alter.net), Sprint, and Digex (ICIX). Depending on where your data is being routed, the latency through UUNet is outstanding with 13ms to places in New Jersey to Maryland, 40ms to the wid-west like St. Louis, and 80-90ms to places across the country in California. Digex is also outstanding with extremely low latency and high throughput. I get the most packet lose via Sprint and the highest latency, but even then it's still decent overall. The optimum email server is usually responive and rarely down. So for $30 a month, I highly recommend it. Bell Atlantic has one of the worst reputations for DSL in America, I've even seen stories on TV about their service being a joke.

wow how timely! i just signed up with the WIZ package for optimum last friday, and i've been strugling all week end to install the modem it's a

3com home connect external with usb

it appears to install ok but i get a yellow (!) innetwork adapters. the
status code when i check properties is code 10.
i even did a clean install of win98 (version 4.10.1998) with the
same result. the network card with the package is a SOHOWARE 10/100 PCI.
no luck installing that. it seems to install ok but when i run winipcfg
it doesn't appear in the drop down box.
I checked with 3com, their email response was prompt but not much help.
they told me to do exactly what i did. I followed the instruction exactly!

after some 20 hours i decided to take a break and this message popped up!
thanks for aqny comments and help. i live in north jersey -west milford.

Cablevision has two service, Optimum Online & Optimum @Home. Generally, when I was the supervisor there overseeing hundreds of tech trying to mess up your computer. @Home and old Lancity was slow!!! But if you live near Dolan's home with his rich friends, I seen 600K/sec, 1 meg in about 2.0 seconds. It varies by location.

ie. I was also in CT..

Stamford - decent, greenwich - horrible. Also in CT, the tap values are higher, stronger signals because you guys have your house like a mile from the street.

In Long Island, the tap is right outside the block, usually innwood or richer area have less house, less traffic, faster.. but usually longisland is kinda crappy. If you're right off middle country road or near cablevision's main office, it kinda sucks there.. for some stoopid reason..

So it varies by area... but overall, it's decent.

In Rockland county, off exit 9, route 303/304 area, they just started and it's really fast... but as usual.. the more people, you'll notice the slowness..

anyway, I have verizon since I don't live in LI and it sucks, double 56k dial up, my time warner roadrunning end of the week.

BTW in CT, some of you guys have RG11 which is like size of a quarter wire, bit smaller.. no the RG56 most of you have, thats why the speed is there...

I'm using Verizon.net DSL (bellatlantic.net), and its terrible! I would get cable, but its not available in my area. Does anyone know when cable is comming to NYC (brooklyn is where I am), or have any recommendations for a better DSL service? I wanted to try earthlink... but to have to pay another $100 for a "setup fee" when I already have DSL at my house seens stupid. Maybe i'll try calling them and see if i can get that $100 waived since i'm switching DSL companies (kinda like switching telco companies - its free!)

Thanks

Oh yeah, i also wanted to say, that while Q3A pings are usually acceptable (on average 80ms), UT plays TERRIBLY! No matter what server I try, as soon as i start moving around/killing people, my ping skyrockets to 20000ms, then back down to 70, back up to 20000, back down....i don't know whats wrong but I can't play UT at all. Also, during peak times I get a ton of packetloss in Everquest (it has a packetloss bar so you know how well the data is flowing). I'm really sick of Verizon already.

cool Brooklyn!....I'm from brooklyn too originally, I grew up in Coney Island Ave and Newkirk Ave right off of Foster Ave...Lol, now its the Pakistani capital of the world!

I also get better pings in Q3 than in UT.....I think it could be better optimized network code built into the game...however, who really knows for sure!!

I CAN tell you that i think BEll Atlantic OVERSTUFFS their damn Central Servers and during peak times it gets PING UGLY!
