this works even if I don't have an existing cable line? Also, do you have to have cable service with optimum?

You probably need Cable already running to your house. If you never had it or disconnected to use a Dish system, you probably have to reconnect..Only way to know for sure is to call them.....

My cousin uses Optonline and it is unbelievably fast. I think he gets like 7Mbps vs my lowly 640kbps from Verizon DSL. Plus his ping times are in the 20's. I only wish they offered it in my neighborhood in NJ.

Here's where to go to find if your burg is covered.

If you don't have CableVision cable service, fuugeeetaboootit.

I agree Roadrunner is fast and reliable. BUt those optimum rates looked tasty. Oh well.

Competition is coming for all Time Warner cable subscribers, BTW. As part of the deal with the FCC to let them go through with their merger with AOL, TW had to agree to open up its network to other ISP providers. Means that down the road, outfits should be able to offer competing internet services on your TW cable connection, like you can get non-Bell local phone service now over your Bell Telco installed home phone wires. But who knows when???

My entire town is wired for Optimum Online EXCEPT for my #$@!#$#$ apartment complex. I was told yesterday that Q3-2001 is the approximate hookup date. great.

My complex is owned by a Satellite company and they put up a fight with Cablevision about wiring our area. Finally they let Cablevision in, but now they've decided to run fiber, which is going to take forever.

I'm not holding my breath. I'm in the broadband deadzone.

Optimum Online is so good it is unbelievable. I get psycho download speeds (highest I've seen is 5.3 megaBYTES per second), 5-30 user nodes (varies), and sub-50 ping times (between 15-50 on my fav. servers for all games) . if you're in CT/NY area grab it while you can! I got in on the $99 free modem 2 year deal a long time ago for 2 modems and it was worth every penny and still is worth the fee . $30 a month for initial connection IP, $20 per extra one. No capped bandwith either .

I think the motorola 4100 has a usb connection as well so you can connect it via a usb port without a usb to ethernet card. I could be wrong.

As far as speeds, all the modems perform almost identically, so don't worry if you have an older modem.

As far as speeds, it's incredible.

I get 8Mbits/sec (1MByte/sec) from ftp servers that can send at that speed and that's at 8pm at night even! Oh also, BTW, OOL caps there upload at 1Mbit/sec which is much higher than almost all other residential ISPs. For even people on slower nodes, it works out at LEAST 6 times faster than verizon DSL for $10 less.

Goldentiger...sorry to disappoint, but you don't get 5.3MBytes/sec. Closer to Mbits probably. The ethernet connection on a cable modem only supports 10MBits/sec (1.25MBytes) so you can't get higher than that, theoretically. It's possible you tested with a file that was already cached to your HD.

I'm sure a lot of ppl with appreciate this deal. It's it an advertised deal?

The deal is advertised in a box within a Wiz add in the Sports section of todays Newsday.

As to the Modem question..The Motorola Surfboard SB3100 and SB 4100 are actually made by General Instruments. THe SB4100 ADDS a USB port and a button on the front that will "disconnect" you without unplugging the modem for people who don't like the idea of being connected 24/7..

Surboard Modem info

THis modem has a configuration page that can be accessed by typing this IP into your web browser : 192.168.100.1 Lots of info to check on signal strength and stuff..Nice extra feature! This Cable Modem also has an internal power supply so only has a plug to worry about. No Huge power pack to make room for. Any of the other Modems they offer will probably perform just as well, but the Surboard has some nice "extra" features..Only downside is it only has a 2 year warranty. the Teryon has a 5 year warranty. Probably no big deal as they will both be doorstops before 2 years is up...

A free NIC, huh? Welp, if I were giving out free nics, it would be the ones below the poverty line...Accton, D-Link, or a no namer, or even worse, an ISA nic. I headed over to e-gay and got me a nice 3-com etherlink server nic with 3xp processor for 5 bucks. Yeah that will do it. Plus e-gay has some great deals on DSL modems, but I know of no ISP that will not try to bribe you with their own.

cablevision is not that great. I have it and do not get anywhere near 5Mbitps other say they have. It all depends on your node and i doubt that any 25-30 person nodes will be like that for long.
The best i get at night is 200KByteps far less than the 649.4 KByteps that the online "speed test" website say that my linw is capable of.
Cablevision is going to be bought soon and probaly the internet services will goto comcast.
I am not saying this is not a good deal (it is). I just have no faith in cablevision (been a customer too long (we have among the highest tv rates in the country))
420!

Killerdcc,

Your speed is too low and something is wrong with your connection.

You should:
1) USE A TWEAK!!! Go to Dslreports.com Tweaks and get one there
2) Rule out slow servers by d/ling from OOL Ftp Site
3) Call OOL and have someone look into it.
4) Join this forum where lots of users AND OOL engineers hang out and answer questions.
Yahoo OOL Group

Your speed is abnormal and at 200KBytes/sec in range where you should get help (and they will help).

I'd say anything below 300KB would be something they would help with. Your problem is NOT a slow node. They are constantly splitting nodes to stay ahead (or close to) demand.

Yes, I agree about the high cable rates.

When I signed up for OOL back in May 1999, I got a free NIC that was an Intel 10/100+ Pro adapter that I still use in my machine.. Works like a charm!

plus it was free because I had a network card that wouldn't work (an old ISA card I had) and the installer just gave it to me..

I too have noticed that my d/l rates have dropped a little bit in speed as well over the last month, espeically downloading from news-server... It's still great, but it's a little slower.

Also another great place to check, if it hasn't already been mentioned, is Speedguide, or :

Linkified

as they have some great tweaks that I use for my connections..

thanks,

Jaybittle,

There have been problems with the news server, it's been well reported in the yahoo groups list. It's not a slowdown on your node, it's a problem with the server itself.

I think they are hoping to get a new news server install in the next couple of weeks. I actually have seen the speeds back to normal on the news server in the past day or so.

Lex,

Thanks for the reply (and your last post which turned me on to the yahoo group which I didn't know existed until 10 minutes ago and I am waiting to be approved)..

Yea I noticed the news-server playing nicely, but still a lot of dropped posts? Has there been any mention of this on the group and what they are doing about it ?
