It really is an un-official, high level OOL support system.

As to the NIC..I think that SohoWare is the only brand carried at the Wiz. That is what they usually provide on LI.

You sure that OOL uses a dynamic IP?
I know they used to, but I thought they switched to static about a year ago.

It's dynamic, but really only will change if:
1) You leave the modem off for about 3-4 days
2) You change your nic
3) They split your node and you wind up on the new node (probably will happen 1-2 times a year).

My IP has changed twice in about the 8 months I have had the service.

That's why I thought it was static.

It's a static IP... mine's never changed yet, and I've left it off for weeks at a time sometimes (vacations, sick, etc.)...

The ip optonline assigns you is dynamic, not static. It does not change often but you cannot run a web server with it hoping it will be static.

I'm in Bergen County - It's been available in my town for about 3 months now I think. I've experienced less than a half hour of downtime since getting the service. And I would have to believe that it is a static IP - the IP address seems to be registered to the NIC's MAC addres in your cable modem - at least thats what it looks like to me.

Whether it's static or dynamic isn't a function of how long you keep it, but rather the technology they use.

It is dynamic. Period.

That being said, it's very possible you could keep the same ip for many months at a time....but just know it can change at any time.

Just wanted to let everyone know that this deal is still going on at the Wiz through Feb. 14th. In addition, the gift cert I received for the flowers is valid through 2/17/02.

What if u r running like a smc or linksys switch and don't turn it off, won't it hold the ip for you and u can run a webserver. Even if u turn it off, i think the server holds the ip on a lease to your mac address for usually 100 days or somethin'.

ool holds leases for 3 days only. even if your machine and modem are off. yahoo groups (formerly egroups) has a great group for ool. A couple high level techs are there and answer many questions...
