Has anyone tried the silver faceplate offered at US Depot?

http://us-depot.com/opdvredrrebo.html

I'm curious about what it looks like...

EDIT: BTW, US Depot is selling this drive for $115 and free shipping, which is the best price I've seen so far. Too bad their resellerrating is 5.0...

I bought this drive at a show this weekend, can NOT get it to work with DVDXcopy Express on DVD+R media, works great with DVD+RW however.

Got Shrink + CopyDVDPro and that works great with the two media types I bought (DVD+R and +RW).

Now here's the stinker, my fancy $250 progressive scan etc etc etc Panasonic DVD player won't touch nothing I've burnt yet, however that $39 MW player from CC (hot deal from last week) that I ordered for my son? Plays the DVD+R's just fine, my son's watching a copy of Monster's Inc right now and I cannot see a degradation in quality and I'm trying hard (57" Hitachi HDTV so flaws are easy to see). It doesn't like the +RW's tho. Both burns work on my regular DVD player on my pc too.

Gonna get some -R and -RW media to try next. If anyone sees a hot deal on media holler

I need to make copies of a home-made dvd to send to family and friends. Does anybody know if there is a reasonably sure-fire way of creating a burned dvd that will play in most standard dvd players?

I don't think there is a sure fire way. Some home DVD players work ok with - and some with +. The best compatability is with computer DVD-Rom drives.

Now that I think of it, LiteOn just came out with a home DVD player that basically is a shell with a LiteOn DVD-Rom drive stuck in it (this drive can be replaced btw).

Do DVD-ROM drives prefer + or -, or does it matter?

I have the Panasonic RP62 and as I suspected it looks like -R/RW media seems to be reported as working by several reports and +R reported by a few as working and +RW didn't see it reported by anyone as working.

Guess I'll hit Ebay and snag a little bit of -R and -RW to test and if it flies on my player I'll stock up on -R media no need for -RW since it doesn't play DVD burned mp3s.

Had the same problem. DVD X Copy didn't recognize the drive. Had a virtual drive from WinDVD (even though I had a DVD Rom), once I deleted the virtual drive, the Optorite tooks its place and DVD X Copy worked. Go figure... and yeah, I updated to 2.17 firmware, too.

Good drive, I have the black one. Only quirk, I couldn't get it to work with DVDxCopy Platnium (version as of last week). Tried everything...ended up making about 10 coasters. (TDK, Memorex, That's discs) Borrowed a friends Sony Dru510(?) model....swapped it for my optorite....dvds "backup" perfectly. Not a big deal as I prefer to use Shrink DVD 3 beta 5 to reduce it down to fit on a DVD+R. Then use Nero 6 and burn the disc.

(Search for "optorite DD0203," and the code will come up in the description.) My total came to $118.50 with free Fedex shipping. Best of all, no tax in CA! (It killed the original deal for me, but thanks to the original poster anyway...without him, I wouldn't have found this deal!)

It is $111 now, whoa this price is dropping fast!!!

I bit on the Us-Depot.com deal @ $115.oo shipped. I also went for the silver faceplate deal. Their checkout system has about 15 drop-down selections for "additional options" such as "ribbon cord" and "screws", all of which you must go through and deselect, or you get billed. Easy enough, but one that caught my eye was "10pak CDRW 0.49$". I do not know what brand they will be, or if I will even get them, for I think it is a typo. They have another option for "10pak CDR @4.49", so we shall see if they honor the CDRW deal @ 49cents. This is a nice bonus on a decent deal. We shall see how the "silver faceplate" option goes, as I have seen no other place offering this option. Wish me luck guys-BIOS

Press release from Accesstek, the company that owns the Optorite brand name Monday, 6 October 2003:

Accesstek, a Taiwan-based optical drive manufacturer, will start mass-production of an 8x DVD-Dual drive this month, according to company officials.
The new model will follow in the footsteps of the earlier DD0201 and DD0203 4x DVD-Dual drives in adopting Sanyo Electric's high-density writing technology, called HD-BURN. The technology effectively doubles the capacity of conventional CD-R media. The pick-up head (PUH) and chipset in the new drive will also be from Sanyo. According to the company, the new drive will offer 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW

About 90 per cent of Accesstek's 8x DVD Dual models will be made under OEM contracts at an average price of about $180 FOB (freight on board), compared with $130-140 charged for the 4x models (the DD0203 is currently available on the Internet for $120.50-178, not including tax and shipping). The remaining 10 per cent of the drives will be sold under Accesstek's 'Optorite' brand, with over 80 per cent of these sold in the US.)

So it looks like the 8x Optorite DD0401 will be salling for about $40 more than the 4x Optorite DD0301.

Ok, here's my experience with this drive: I bought two of these drives about six weeks ago when they were @ $150 each. One works flawlessy; the other is a brick. I didn't use the brick one for a month, then plugged it in. It generated "buffer underruns" and other errors on every Phillips DVD+R disk I tried to burn (these were even Optorite recommended). The drive is supposed to have buffer underrun protection, so I knew this was weird. I tried Nero 6, DVD X Copy, etc...and none could successfully burn a disk from this drive. I use Nero 6 for the second drive and it works like a charm every time. The Phillips disks burn at 2.4x, which is their rated speed. I have not tried them in consumer DVD players because they're data backup disks that I'm burning.

Anyway, I finally flashed the bios (version 16 from Optorite's website) last weekend after 10 coasters and the drive died on the spot. Contacted Optorite tech support via email, and they told me to send it back to them for repair/replacement since the vendor had a 10 day return window....turnaround time to repair/replace by Optorite is 21 days.

I haven't sent it back yet, but I'm (somewhat) optimistic the replacement will work. Still....if I'd known about all the issues with this drive that I've since found on various forums, I never would have bought it. Go search the web for forums on this drive....the problem tally is unbelievable and dates back to June, 03. My issues with it were classic issues others have experienced. When I bought it...all I saw were rave reviews. I should've searched a bit more.

Next time, I'll stick with Sony, Liteon, or Pioneer and pay a bit more...it's worth it to me.

That sux jacksandgo, was considering this as well. Think I've made the same decision to focus on Lite-on brands or better.

Note about the above comment... not true.

The optorite drive will use the HD-Burn technology to double the density of the disk from 700 mb to 1400 mb.... these can ONLY be read back on dvd drives.... not cd drives.... ANY dvd drive should be able to read these. So far though, I can't burn them.... Optorite says to use some of the approved media, but don't have any on hand.

I burned 24 DVD movies using DVD-R and CloneDVD. All of them are playable on my DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
Tested on Sony DVD-ROM, Goldstar DVD-ROM, Lite-ON DVD-ROM, NEC DVD-/+RW, Cyberhome DVD Player, Memorex DVD Player and APEX DVD Player.
