Wow!!!! Thanx for the heads up! I have had problems with DVD-Rs for quite a while, and was ready to throw all DVD-Rs out of the windows......now maybe I can start using them again!!!!

Not to get side-tracked - but is the DVD burner software important? Or can I use any of them? I hear some people like Nero, and others swear by Roxio...

Avoid Nero from what I last heard. It doesn't correctly write the last file on DVD media. Use Stomp Record Now.

I guess I shouldn't slam Roxio just 'cause it was a pita to use on e version ago. Honestly, though, after using Nero that I got with an old LiteOn, I would never go back. It's just too damned easy to use Nero, and it works flawlessly. I'm using 6.0.0...0.0.0.19 right now without problems, including the Optorite in a <geek>sexy black aluminum enclosure on a firewire chain. If you want to try it out, just get powergrab and a free teranews account, then check out alt.binaries.warez (IIRC) and get "working trial". Burn a few discs and, if you like it, buy it.

edit: I hadn't heard about the "last file" problem. I've backed up my entire business data drive (3.x GB) to DVD+RW every week for the last two and a half months and haven't had a problem with restores, including a full restore (transfer, actually) to my laptop, and the copy occured without a problem. DVD+RW video discs have played fine, too. All written with Nero.

I'm using Nero 5.5.10.42 and it works fine. You'll need a late version of Nero or use the B's Gold that comes with the drive if you want to be able to use HD-BURN, as they have the only software that currently supports it to my knowledge. I would recommend Nero over the B's Gold anyday.

I would recommend Nero over any burning software anyday... but my optorite was giving me some serious problems burning CDrs when i upgraded to ver 6.0.0.19... i burnt 5 coasters! i tried 5 different burning speeds with 5 different ~700mb files... i couldn't pass the lead-in phase on any of them! I uninstalled and reinstalled nero 6.0.0.11 and now it works fine...

I wasn't interested in moving up to Nero 6.0. They have tried to get too fancy with their software. I just want something that burns whatever I want without any problems. I don't get any coasters.

From what I understand they're the same drive with different outer shells. Internal mechanisms are the same.

i just moved up to nero 6.0 for better HD-burn and DVD support... i somewhat liked the less fancy look of 5.0 much better... but upgrades need to happen eventually....

Thanks

DVDXcopy is one of the best programs out there for copying DVDs... you can also try DVD2One. It only takes about 20min to compress a DVD-9 to a single 4.5 GB DVDr. Check out the forums too. DVDShrink is also a good utility and its free.

Would you guys recommend this one or the Lite-On LDW-4111S? Which is $130 at newegg.. but it's a lite-on so I don't know if the price/quality difference is there or not?

So how do these compare to the IOMEGA 4x Dual DVD +RW / CD-RW Internal Drive ? From reading this it sounds as though that you can use both formats - / + with the firmware updates? So the question is Oporite DVD DD0203 +/- RW ? or IOMEGA 4xDual DVD+RW/CD-RW ? Or am I missing Something ? Like the DD in the title (DD0203) standing for Dual Drive?

Get the IOmega 4x burner. It's an NEC 1300A drive. The Optorite DD0201/DD0203 drive is also a dual format burner, not just due to a firmware update.

The Optorite DD0203 firmware update has fixed a couple of really critical bugs and added a little better media compatibility, but the NEC 1300A is still far superior. The Optorite (Sanyo) drives support "HD-BURN" to allow double the storage on a regular CD-R, but that feature is compatible with very, very few media types. HD-BURN discs can only be read back in other Optorite DVD burners since no other manufacturer supports it.

I have an Optorite dual format burner and I really wouldn't recommend it unless you plan on sticking to the short recommended media list. I'm disappointed that the IOmega/Amazon order I made last week was cancelled (OOS).

I've never heard that. OTOH, it was verified that some Roxio (5.x? I never had it installed), failed to write the last few blocks, I think during a CD-copy operation. So if you duped a CD through several generations using their software, it could cause problems. I hope that most data-format CDs have at least a few padding blocks written to the end.

However, that was on CDs, I don't know about DVDs, and recent 6.x versions of Nero, other than they are generally somewhat buggy. I'm sticking with 5.5.x for now.

I have the Optorite and thought maybe I made a mistake buying it since I tried the Memorex DVD+RW disc (from Optorite's list) that said (Memorex stated) it was suitable for 4X and 2.4X. The discs wouldn't work. Took them back to get a refund and tried "TDK" and it worked just fine! I then tried "HP" label DVD+RW 10 pack for $30. It worked beautifully! The part number for the HP disc's doesn't match Optorites limited list. But hey, you can't argue with success. (smile) I use Nero 6.0011 as my writing software. So far, it hasn't let me down. As for the HD-BURN technology, I wouldn't give it any weight in your decision. It is a techno-go-no-where technology....

has anyone gotten the dd0201 yet? seems like that one would fix the eject button problem that the dd0203 has, or at least mines does. I would say 6/10 pushes dont eject the dvd tray unless you come at the button a certain way. maybe optorite can send us a new shell fixing this probl..... nusiance.

My drive is stealthed and I have NO problems ejecting. I had one coaster when I first got it because I let Nero burn at max and it didn't work. I have burned over 100 movies with the Amazon\Memorex discs at 4X and it works great.
DVD Shrink 3.0 beta 5 and Nero 5.5 have been flawless.

I just got this drive and upgrade to the latest firmware, but under device manager, it reports that it is:

GENERIC DVD RW 4XMax

Is this bad? I thought it would said something along the line 0203...
