Oracle : Configuring Tnsnames

Hello

my schools oracle isqlplus server is http://dpg1.dpg.devry.edu:7778/isqlplus
there is a login, password and connection identifier.

I just installed Oracle 10g on my laptop hoping to connect to the database. How do I configure the tnsnames file.

I'm not an isqlplus user, but it was my impression that the purpose of isqlplus was to eliminate the need for an oracle client (otherwise sqlplus works better).

First off, you could easily have found this out by checking the dox at http://tahiti.oracle.com.

Second, there will be a sample file in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora. Go check it out.

Third, if you installed 10g on your laptop, check out the net management program, it will lead you through it by the hand.

Fourth - the above port is where the oracle apache control takes over. sqlplus doesn't chat that port - sqlplus is port 1521, so fire up sqlplus and try "connect user/password@SID:1521:HOST" if you're stuck, that should work.

edit: this wine isn't helping, that connection string doesn't look right. Check it out before complaining if it doesn't work
