Now that oracle is telling it's costumers that it should definately use linux for all it's midlevel database needs and Peoplesoft has ported itself to linux due to customer demands. Is Linux now considured completely mainstream operating system?

With other dominate companies like IBM, SUN, and Novell, who all have there own operating systems and such, but now are moving selling and supporting linux OS versions of their own(or in parntership with Redhat or SuSE). How long will it be till most every company is going to be running linux servers?

Do you think the key to linux movement into desktop land is going to be from the boss seeing how stable and cheap it is to run linux, or will it require a program that can do everything that Outlook can. Is MS going to slowly loose server market as people sell of their old hardware and try to move up in the IT world and are met with recomendations that from most vendors that Linux is the way to go?

Or is it that I am just been smoking to much glue (elmer's; the purple stuff. It's nice) and as the ecomony turns around so will peoples attitudes, and they will realize that MS was the way to go after all?

edit: link fixed... Guess that's why they created the preview button, eh?

Now answering your question. I strongly believe that Linux can be considered a mainstream operating system. It's just that the M$ corporation has pulled a shade over our eyes to enslave us in their operating system. I used to use Windows, but I have been using Linux for almost and I don't have a need to go back to Windows.

I think that what is going to bring Linux to the mainstream is people like you and me. The way you create demand for a product is by asking for support for it when you go to a store even if you don't need it, to talk to your windows friends about linux and woe them with all the cool tricks that you can perform with linux. If you go to a computer store ask if the product has a driver for linux, just to get the salesman wondering what is linux or to make him realize that there are people that use Linux not just for fun, but to get a lot of work done.

i agree years ago, bill gates took a slightly different road--he got the infant pc builders to include his o/s among the choices of o/s you could get with the early pc's. i think the form you talk about is better for building a real, long-term customer base. i don't believe linux is completely mainstream yet--almost there.

What would it take for linux for a desktop to be taken seriously? A outlook killer?

I think once they add up the costs and stuff, they would rather hire more expesive admins and train people at linux, rather then face the costs of virus's and continual yearly cycle of hardware upgrades.

And what about supercomputing? 26 of the top 500 computers including (I know I mention this alot) the top 5th most powerful computer in the world 2002 ran linux. Did you hear about the los alamos research lab building the "Green Destiny" with the Tranmseta blade servers? They said that upgrading from a VA linux cluster,(64 node/128 proccessor) to a 240 node cluster took 2 hours and now fits into a broom closet.

Would businesses be able to use that sort of computing, or is it only for specialized number crunching?
