Hi everyone,

hope someone willing to give me some notes on the difference between oracle 8i, 9i and 11i.

Was given a 8i CD to install and find out there are 9i and 11i available as well. Read that 9i was just released, and can't figured out why there is 11i? Are the *i refering to type rather than newer version?

Thanks in advance.

Oracle 11i is the application server, for hosting "enterprise" middleware applications.

Oracle 9i is the latest version of the DBMS, but 8i is still very relevant. Off-hand I can't think of any significant differences between the two, but I'm sure there are some. Oracle added the i transitioning from version 8.0.x to version 8.1.x to signify Internet awareness.

thanks manly!

I have other questions
Can 11i and 8i/9i be installed on one server?

Do you need to install 8i/9i and 11i in order to use one another or the dbms and apps server works independently?

thanks again!

Actually, I goofed. Oracle 11i is just Oracle Applications, which is a suite of business software. I don't know much about it, but you can check out Oracle's web site.

I'm a software developer, so I have worked with Oracle 8i and 9i DBMS before. You can install the DBMS + the 9iAS (application server) on one host if you wanted to. It probably would have to be a relatively beefy machine because Oracle's system requirements are not light.

I haven't used Oracle 9iAS, but if I had to guess you could hook it up to any SQL DBMS of your choice. Every Java application server that I know of communicates to the database through a JDBC driver, so it's a pluggable infrastructure. That's one of the big advantages of J2EE (vendor agnostic services) vs. MS .NET. At worst, you would lose a few obscure, proprietary optimizations that Oracle implements between its app server and database.
