Hey guys,
I was talking to my friend and he says that the days or oracle ruling the DBMS world is over! He arguement was that while oracle might still be faster that MS SQL server it was much too expensive and harder to maintain especially for the smaller companies. Also MS SQL server is rapidly catching up in performance too. I personally would hate it if oracle were to be eaten up my MS. I was wondering if u guys had any comments on it
thanks

MySQL and PostgreSQL are free

while that maybe true I believe that both MySQL and PostgreSQL suffer from performance disadvantages. So many cos might be willing to shell up the 5K required to get MS SQL server but not the kind of dough required for oracle. If thats truly the case then oracle is in trouble.
I was trying to search on google for any website which would compare and maybe comment on the future growth potential of these two DBMS. Any links would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that MySQL is jsut about the fastest SQL server out there, which they accomplish by leaving out some of the features found in oracle and MS SQL.

I was surprised to hear that DB2 is the most popular DBMS being used in the world today.

What good is speed without seatbelts, rollcage and a pit crew?

The only thing holding MS-SQL back is lack of a 64 bit platform to run on. But i have feeling Hammer is gonna fix that

It's great if you're on a motorcycle. Some people need the extra features, and some would rather go for speed.

SQL Server is a viable alternative to Oracle.

BUT, Oracle is FIRMLY Entrenched in with Fortune 100 companies. That will not change. HOWEVER, the growing market for Databases is in Small to Medium Size companies. Very few small to medium sized companies will choose Oracle of SQL Server given the relative cost vs performance of each.

there are various small databases, none of which i would mess with if i were a developer. SQL Server and MSDE (MS Database Engine I think a watered down sql that's basically free) pretty much handle everything a small to medium sized business needs.

Mysql is on occasion marginaly faster than any commercial DB. The missing features will keep it out of enterprise computing.

MS SQL has come a long way in the past few years and will continue to make inroads.

Your probably right, I never deal with Fortune 100 companies. i do know that Oracle can't TOUCH MS SQL Server for Small to Medium size businesses and there is growth in that market is MUCH better than in the fortune 100 market.
