Study: Rise in some cancers linked to oral sex

There's a worrisome uptick in the incidence of certain head and neck cancers among middle-aged and even younger Americans, and some experts link the trend to a rise in the popularity of oral sex over the past few decades.

That's because the human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major trigger for these cancers, and HPV can be transmitted through this type of sexual activity.

"It seems like a pretty good link that more sexual activity, particularly oral sex, is associated with increased HPV infection," said Dr. Greg Hartig, professor of otolaryngology — head and neck surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison.

It's becoming clear that HPV causes a lot of problems in the human body. Even the forms of the virus that we thought produced no outward symptoms seem to cause cancer.

Might be time to ask my doctor about the HPV vaccine. I know it's only approved for women under 27 at this point, but from what I understand a lot of people are getting it off-label since there's a good chance it benefits men as well.

I just was watching a morning news show where they were discussing reasons why you should offer HPV vaccine to teen girls. They specifically said that boys don't need it so much because while they can be carriers, it is not linked to specific cancers (as HPV is to certain cervical cancer).

I wonder if it matters whether she spits or swallows.

If circumcision helps prevent the transmission of STDs, and the majority of males in the USA are cut, why is HPV even an issue?

From the studies I read, people are more likely to get mouth and throat cancer from tobacco use and drinking whiskey then from HPV.

If someone with an oral hpv infection kisses someone else - with no oral sex involved, can the hpv be transmitted to the other person? Will HPV be so rampant that kissing causes cancer?

Helps prevent doesn't mean prevents altogether. Reduces risk might be a better phrase.

The virus can be transmitted by direct contact, but usually there needs to be a lesion for the infection to occur, a small scratch or scrape. Remember HPV causes regular warts, plantar warts etc. it's a very common, widespread virus.

Pretty much the whole population carries some form of it.
