Actually, emeraldsky, he must be recommending that you buy a stereo amplifier, which will be a minimum $100-150 more. That brings the "hot deal" price for tiny 1-way speakers+sub+cheap stereo receiver to at least $630 for a 2-channel stereo system.

From the orbaudio site:
and a value subwoofer we select from existing subwoofers in the marketplace. Subwoofer brand and specifications determined at time of shipment and subject to variation

You know, nothing says "quality" like a company that won't even tell you the name of the off-brand subwoofer they are selling you.

I don't mean this in a confrontational way, but you clearly have no idea of what the audio market is like if you think that these are a "hot deal" in the $600-700 pricerange. For people who need tiny, tiny speakers, or who value aesthetics above all else, they may be a reasonable buy (the same people who buy Bose Acoustimass), but you can do much better by going to a real stereo store and listening to some of the brands I mentioned above. (Even mainstream brands like Polk Audio and JBL will give you more.)

And I'd turn the "Seething Rage" knob down just a bit.

And if someone really doesn't want to spend a ton on a complete 5.1 package, check out Fluance. They get good reviews and will do the job for 90% of the people out there. Same with the Paradigm, PSB, and other brands you mentioned. I just figured I'd add Fluance as an option since nobody mentioned it yet. For $200-300, you CAN get pretty good multimedia/home theatre speakers.

In their category, I'm sure they sound good. They are rated fairly good on audioreview/audioholics, although with only 5 ratings.

For the price however, if you have the space and are willing to tolerate a potentially less than cutting edge chic design, you can do better.

With all that, and what was said before...my biggest issue would be not being able to listen to them before buying. Yes, I know they have the 30-day in-home trial deal, but that's definitely less convenient than being able to go to a stereo store and listen to them there (or even take a pair home with you and hook it up to your own setup then take them back).

Thanks for the heads up though. I'm glad you're enjoying the musical experience they provide. Sound, afterall, is all about options and personal preference.

THESE speakers are UNBELIEVABLE!
BTW, these speakers need power (receiver amp or powered subwoofer) My Midiland 4100 subwoofer powers them.
These speakers need power and a subwoofer. The price you quote only gets you half-way home.

I don't think there are too many people with $150+ subwoofers sitting around idle and they just need a couple of satellite speakers to round out their system.

Thanks YoYo. It seems that people are especially pleased with the more expensive Orbaudio systems.

One of the guys on that forum who has 2 of the cheap ($228) satellites said:
"I have a pair of the single speaker Orbs. I love the appearance but not the sound. I find them unsatisfying like I've found every single driver micro speaker I've heard. They are too lacking in the lower midrange to blend nicely with a sub."
He's talking about an unmatched sub. It would be wise to buy a matched sub from the company, or find out what kind of sub they typically ship with their $380 system.

Lacking in midrange is lacking in midrange. You're a moron if you want your sub to pickup midrange duties.

The whole point of a subwoofer is that it can cover the low end frequencies that are difficult to locate to the human ear. If you have your sub producing sounds above 100hz, you're going to start being able to easily localize the sub and those frequencies will sound like they're coming from whatever corner you have the sub in.

Interesting link to speakers with a very similar design.
What's the price structure? I didn't see it linked.

Round is nice. It is a fashion statement, like Bose. They sound sensational, but will they tire you as you listen to them? Bose speakers always sounds great for the first ten minutes. After that I have to go.

I thought round enclosures were supposed to be the best? then cylinder, then rectangle. Yay/nay?

[/quote]Exactly, so what was your previous point? They should be excellent in midrange, since that's all they are - a midrange driver. No highs, no lows, must be bose (copy).

If size is an issue, as well as aesthetics.. this is pretty hot. However if you want sound quality I'd recommend a set of near-field monitors for the same price.

I'd love to hear an opinion from someone that bought them based on my OP.

Uhm, there aren't any.

But if you can find that one person with a powered subwoofer, powered satellites that have been burned out from abuse, and $220+ to blow on mail-order-only single-driver satellites, your long travails of mingling with us small-minded simpletons will have been worth it.

Did anyone else's eyes/brain trick them into reading "Flatulence" above?

i think the negative responses are more to the attitude or tone of the OP not the deal itself....though of course by being so defiensive/diffident from the get-go he sort of opened himself up to the criticism of the deal itself.
