Ordered E6600 to pair with DS3. Should I change it to E6400 or E6300?

So I ordered E6600 which is not shipped yet. I have DS3, OCZ PC6400 plat RAM and 1900XT in hand, I will get a Tuniq Tower HSF. I definitely want to OC to 3.0Ghz minimum, 3.5Ghz desired.

After reading so many so many E6600+DS3 comments, I am thinking whether I need to cancel E6600 and order a E6400 or E6300 instead? Cost is not a problem, period. I won't order a 6700 or 6800, neither will I change to a "better" MB

Thanks for your suggestions.

i've heard that with the 4MB conroes, the DS3 tends to be more limited in its maximum FSB speed. it can be anywhere from 366-400MHz, whereas with 2MB allendales, the max is supposed to be closer to 500MHz+. Of course, with the e6600, you'll have a nice 9x multi, which means even if you can only get to 366MHz FSB, you'll still hit 3.3GHz. If you're lucky you might even get to 400 FSB and that equates to 3.6GHz. Personally i wouldn't have any problem recommending the combo.

if you do decide to drop down, i'd go with the e6400. the e6300 just has such a low multi - even though i've heard of 500MHz+ FSB clocks on the DS3, i couldn't get much past 430 or so without seriously cranking up the northbridge voltage, which i don't really feel comfortable with when the heatsink is passive. I got my e6400 to 3.24GHz stable, and it might even go higher, but the problem is that heat is just too high (~68C), so i dropped it down. you might want to look into getting a zalman 9500 or a scythe ninja to keep heat levels down.

Stick to the E6600. The problems of the E6600 are overhyped. It is just a bunch of people who own cheaper processors and want to give theirs more worth.

Actually it's not from what i have seen.

There does appear to be an lower OC on average from the E6600 than the E6400.

I'd stick with the E6400 for 965 chipsets, as they really do seem to produce better results from what i've observed.

That, & sorry, but when you have a more expensive CPU clocking less than or at least no better than one for a lot less...sorry, but it's a less than ideal bang for buck deal.

I'd cancel the E6600 and get the E6400. I have the OCZ DDR2 800 Plats, DS3, E6400. OCs to 3400 w/o effort.

Unless most E6400s are getting 3.4-3.5ghz standard, I'd go E6600. I have one myself and (I may have been fortunate) it is a great clocking chip. I bet it could do 3.8 if I were willing to pass 1.45v on the volts. I'm on DS-3. You may have to play with mem settings, those were my biggest problem but it just took a bit of burnin time and entering the timings manually

I think most E6400's will hit 3.4GHz from what i've seen, I know mine does and i've seen very few reports of ones that don't.

The range for the E6400s generally is 3.2-3.4 stable from what I'm seeing but newer BIOSes are constantly allowing people to go a little higher. Also depends on mobo choice. The P5B especially is allowing higher FSB settings. We havent seen what the new 590 mobos will do. Right now figure 3.2-3.4 for a E6400 depending on components and luck.

Notice how everyone recommends the processor they have? I recommend the E6600. I have no problems OCing the E6600. 3.6GHz was a snap @1.45 volts.

Good luck!

I tried also the E6600 on my rigs, it would clock 200-300 MHz less than the Allendales.

The 200-300 MHz advantage compensates the 1x2MB cache difference. As the E6400 is 100 bucks cheaper, here it goes my recommendation:

get the E6400 !

I have neither CPU but think of it this way:

Both CPUs will OC to well over 3Ghz, far more CPU power than you need. Why not save some money?

If you get one of the new week 27 chips I say keep it. They are overclocking much better than my week 24 chip.

Thank you for your inputs.

I will stick with E6600. At stock speed, it beats FX-62, if I can reach 3.0G, I got the fastest proceser, isn't it
