I still don't play FPS on consoles, but driving games and action platformers aren't bad. I didnt like Uncharted demo at first either, but I ended up loving the game. In shooters like Uncharted I would essentially stop so I could line up a good head shot, as its hard to do them on the move like with a mouse. I learned to essentially play it like a Rambo movie: just keep moving and firing. Not everything needs to be a head shot. I relied on melee a lot as well. By the end of the game I felt better about the controls, and each game like it I complain less and less.

If you get gamefly, I recommend Spider-man: Web of Shadows. Heavenly Sword was kinda cool. SF4 and Soul Caliber 4 are excellent. Midnight Club LA is good as well. Burnout Paradise is only $20 now new. And Infamous comes out next week. Dont play GTA4...you have to work up to that. Even for a console game controls are sh!t, but at least it has a lock on so you dont have to really aim.

Between me moving trying not to get hit, trying to aim, and the enemies constantly moving, it's near impossible to get a hit on them. The aiming controls seem really slow too, particularly in MGS4 demo.

I've got a bunch of demos downloaded, different genres, but haven't installed any but MGS 4 and uncharted yet.
Played GT4 on PC.

are you coming from pc gaming? if so try the inverted control.

but just practice and time will fix it.

yep, i'm a pc gamer primarily. i'll have to check out the inverted controls.

ok, so i got it ps3 media server working but how do you watch hulu or netflix videos through it?

i got the trial for Playon and that works flawlessly, but not sure I want to spend another $40.

hmm...some searching on the ps3 media server forums suggests that it doesn't support it and is against Hulu's TOS?????

seems like playon might be the winner here.

ok...maybe i'm missing something but i'm confused. Playon works great for playing internet videos but i don't see anything for playing files off your PC. PS3 media server plays videos off my PC fine, but the only internet video i see if some for news channel or something???

tried some more demos

Heavenly sword - seems pretty cool but i'm not quite sure what i was doing wrong because i kept getting hit a lot.

Battlefield: bad company - I hated BF2 so I was wary of this. Seems like it might be pretty decent but I didn't last very long and again the problem of aiming and moving with the controller is nigh impossible for me.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam - soooooo repetitive and boring....

Soul Caliber IV - seems pretty good. the fights were pretty easy though.

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift - meh...not really a huge racing game fan. I seemed to come in last all the time...always crashing

MGS4 - looks interesting, i feel like i'm always looking down at the ground and not able to see wtf is ahead of me. again, trying to walk, keep my view in place, avoid enemies, etc all at once seems near impossible.

Uncharted - seems fun if i can figure out the moving and aiming at the same time bit...

Warhawk - seems pretty cool. was better at moving and aiming with this than the other games, but I still suck.

I might be missing one or 2 but I also have several more demos that i haven't installed and/or played yet.

I found the actual game much more challenging. I picked it up when it was on sale for $10 at BB a few weeks back.

It seems to take a certain knack for being able to handle shooters on a console, so I understand where you are coming from. I got introduced to WASD+Mouse shooters and console shooters at around the same time (always had a crap computer before and greatly preferred RTSs for the longest time) so it wasn't that bad for me.

Definitely check out WipeOut HD, and Ratchet and Clank. Also, maybe consider Burnout Paradise if you are into racers. Sure, Burnout doesn't have the same level of attention to realism as Gran Turismo, but it is a heck of a lot of fun. You can get all these demos on the PSN.

i tried burnout paradise demo on PC and i didn't like. I like Burnout revenge on ps2 though.

i noticed some games on PSN that you could buy and download the full game. is there a way to see only the full games because when I saw those games, they were mixed in with DLC and other little crap.

ok, why is it that in most games, you only get to see like 2 feet around your character? i have a 42" wide screen tv and i can't see crap...genji, ninja gaiden, mgs 4 all do this...

I haven't played those, but I thought the field of view in Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted were just fine. I think Resistance might have been a little small, but I only played it a couple times.

wipeout is so hard though. I tried the demo and I could never win a race. Looks great, but the learning curve is so steep. I played the PSP version and did a little bit better with some of the other vehicles so maybe the one vehicle in the demo is part of the problem, but that game is just too effin hard.

Maybe you're not used to that kind of racer? I think I placed 3rd on my first run in the demo, then worked up to 1st. I don't do so well at GRID, though.

Possibly.. I can usually pick up arcade racers fairly quickly, I've always been awesome at the Need for Speed and mario kart series, but not so much for hardcore simulation stuff like gran tourismo. I used to have wipeout for PC back in the late 90s.. I don't remember being so great at it back then either.

Try the demos for PURE and inFamous. I'm not sure if Ratchet has a demo but if it does you may as well try it, I'm not so hot on that game.

Motorstorm is a brutal and random racer, so your impression on that is spot on. Not sure what the deal is with MGS4, I don't play any shooters at all and I was able to bungle my way through the game with minimal difficulty.

I tried infamous for a little bit today. I have the same complaints with that as the other "shooter" type games. trying to move and fight and shoot at moving enemies, as well as trying to select different weapons/blocking/etc is impossible. the only way i can hit anything is if i stand still and then i'm still horrible at it and meanwhile my ass is getting kicked.

i did try one ratchet and clank demo. that was much easier to control.

so with the Rock Band and Guitar Hero games, which is better? or maybe a better question is, what exactly is the difference between them? I understand that Rock Band allows you to play different instruments, like drums instead of just guitars, right?

Like others have already said, you really just need to get used to "console gaming." I've always been a predominant PC gamer, with the occasional console gaming experience at a friend's place. I, too, bought a PS3 for Blu-ray and now use it for gaming. I can't say the adjustment was as jaring as it seems to be for you, but I played a lot of shooters with friends during college so I got to get used to the controls then. You should definitely try inverting, I can't possibly play without being inverted. Also, you're really going to have to just get used to the fact that console games just "feel" different than PC games. Stylistically/controlling/etc.

Games to try? Dead Space (better on the console than PC), Uncharted, Dynasty Warriors 6 (I LOVE this franchise, and the ROTK games .. it's much better than Gundam.. but still repetative), Condemned 2 (was fairly fun.. and I got it for 10 bucks ), Soul Calibur IV, Mirror's Edge (fun but short)... I really haven't played many console games just yet.

As a PC gamer I have the same problem with console FPS. I think even if I get used to the gamepad there is no way I would be as good as on the PC so I wont even bother.

Three games so far I really like that already makes it worth owning the PS3

Ratchet and Clank - fun and addictive, I mustve played this one 5 times through already
RE5 - Good but short. Very replayable though since there are so many extras and weapon upgrades.
NBA 2K9 - Im not into sports games either but 2K9 is amazing and must play.

I'm a die-hard PC gamer, but the PS3 has been dragging me into console gaming. I've liked:

Resistance 2 (especially online cooperative multiplayer)
Bioshock (no bullcrap Securom on PS3)

Yeah, mouse/keyboard is FAR superior, but that doesn't mean the games can't be fun.

Guitar Hero Legends of Rock
Noby Noby Boy - I'm still trying to figure out if I like this game - it's really weird

thats the problem though. if i can't get anywhere in the game because i'm constantly dying because i can't aim and move, it ceases to be fun and becomes frustrating.

You'll get better. Honestly, I'd just grab Killzone 2 or some popular MP FPS and just play on PSN for a few weeks. After awhile you'll get used to a game pad.
