Do not take D3 straight. You need magnesium, B-complex, and ideally K2 ("menaquinone") as well--ask your doctor about the last one, especially if you have any family history of thrombophilia or clot disorders. If you take pure D3 all you'll do is deposit a nice thick layer of calcium over the endothelium of your arteries and veins...

The health and nutrition advice in this forum is second only to the collective expertise on wines.

this is gradual buildup? It will take a while for bad effects to happen?

Why not just take a big fat sugar pill? It'll probably be just as useful, considering that most supplements are wholly unnecessary.

Vitamin and mineral supplementation may be needed for people who may be deficient due to diet, lifestyle, and/or diseases/disorders. A lot of supplements sold for fitness, to make you smarter, live longer, etc, yes. Although if the OP is deficient in vitamin D, the easy and best solution is to go out and get sunshine (aka light from the sun... I'm not advocating a supplement called Sunshine).

Yes. They benefit specific people with certain conditions. For the general population, they are most likely throwing away money.

Yeah, and potentially oversupplementing on vitamins that foods are "fortified" with. I know people who take megadoses of vitamin C thinking it's giving them magical immunity to colds and the flu. I'm sure they are just literally pissing away that money.

I've been through this myself and been told these things by medical practitioners. No nutrient works in a vacuum; there are synergistic effects with just about everything else you put in the body.

Vitamin D, among other things, changes the flow of calcium. Magnesium is something like a cellular gateway to it, somewhat similarly, as I understand things, to the relationship between potassium and sodium in that regard. Vitamin K helps keep the calcium in bones where it belongs, rather than in the bloodstream; I suspect, personally, that warfarin leads to more cardiovascular disease than people think because its mechanism of action is vitamin K antagonism.

Vitamins C and B complex because they are water soluble, meaning they are depleted daily. You should take one 500mg of Vitamin C and two Vitamin B50 once per day. Both are over the counter. You can also get them from your diet by eating the right foods. Citrus for vitamin C and seafood, leafy green vegetables, nuts for vitamin B for example.

Vitamin B12, vitamin B12 or vitamin B-12, also called cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin that has a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and the formation of red blood cells. It is one of eight B vitamins. It is involved in the metabolism of every cell of the human body, especially affecting DNA synthesis, fatty acid and amino acid metabolism.[1] No fungi, plants, nor animals (including humans) are capable of producing vitamin B12. Only bacteria and archaea have the enzymes needed for its synthesis. Proved food sources of B12 are animal products (meat, fish, dairy products). Some research states that certain non-animal products possibly can be a natural source of B12 because of bacterial symbiosis. B12 is the largest and most structurally complicated vitamin and can be produced industrially only through a bacterial fermentation-synthesis. This synthetic B12 is used to fortify foods and sold as a dietary supplement.

Pretty much why nutrition is the preferred way to get vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, etc. OP would be better off adding a variety of leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables into his diet and take a walk (make them long walks during the winter) or go for a run every day then just downing supplements. Absorption is much better, too, than through tablets.

I occasionally take vitamin D (I don't bother in summer though as I get enough sun light), Vitamin C and Omega 3. Idealy you want to try to eat healthy and get proper nutrients that way, but supplements are well, supplementing what you may not have gotten in that day. Nobody eats the same exact thing every day and each food has different nutrients. So it kind of helps balance out.

Nutrition in general is actually extremely complex though, there's so many different theories on what is good/bad for us and not a single one agrees with the other. It's a whole science on it's very own and probably more advanced than rocket science. Rocket science is mostly based on man made stuff (like uhh, rockets) so it is more understood than the human body, which is more like a super advanced computer that has zero documentation and scientists are continuously learning more about it every day.

I say just have everything in moderation. Try to not eat too much processed crap, try to eat more fruit and vegetables and natural foods. etc. But even then, you hear of people who smoke a pack a day and live to 95, and people who eat super healthy and die of a freak unexplainable heart attack at 50. When it's your time, it's your time. Eat drink and be merry.
