I'm not sure what the negative and positive signs mean for power. what's the difference between -6.00 and +6.00?

- means nearsighted afaik, i.e. you need glasses to see far away.
check your prescription, it'll say what it is. you're gonna need to fax in it

yeah I am nearsighted and wear POWERFUL glasses!

it does say -6.00, i just wasn't sure if it was just a hyphen or part of my power.

FWIW, I did not need to fax mine. Just gave them the Dr.'s name.

maybe 12 diopters That would be a major mistake for you if you got the opposite ones.

OP... do you currently own contacts?

If not, do not order contacts online. Go see a doc first to get the right prescription.
If you have contacts currently, than all the measurements you need are on the box for your current contacts. Including power, with either a negative or positive number.

i was looking at my prescription written on a sheet by the optometrist. i ordered it but it didn't go through because my prescription exired in march. i have to go to the optometrist anyway.

My wife got an eye exam for glasses but didn't get a contacts fitting, and she had problems ordering contacts online because of that. She recently got an eye exam with a contacts fitting and ordered contacts online no problem.
