Woohoo! I'll be placing an order for a new T42 (through a friend) on Monday...here are the specs:
1.8ghz Pentium-M
512mb RAM
64MB Radeon 9600
5400RPM 80GB HD
15" SXGA+
Modem
B/G Wireless
DVD/RW
Modem
Gigabit ethernet
4 year warranty
6-cell battery

Price: 2269...w/tax it's 2427.83

I'm thinking I got a pretty good price (?)...I mean, the 1.8ghz models on the website are nearly 3000. I'll be purchasing through one of my friends at Duke University...go blue devil pricing powers...hehe

What do y'all think?
-Eric

Edit: Friend apparently thought UXGA is 1400x1050...

haha...funny you say that, b/c my friend apparently thought UXGA=1400x1050. He said that's what Duke's catalogue said...either way, it's not 1600x1200 and I'm not going blind (yet)

does the laptop have the new Dothan processor? 2 mb of cache for the same price as the older centrino's. Make sure you get the new processor. It is supposedly alot faster according to CNET.

Check it out here....

Good call man. I think SXGA+ is about the perfect resolution for a 14.1" or 15" screen, anything higher and its tough on the eyes over time.

That said, I'm in the same boat as you, waiting for my T42p through NCSU's discount program. I got the model 2373GVU (14" SXGA+, 1.8GHz, 512MB, ATi FireGL T2 128, 60gig 7200rpm, Bluetooth, IBM a/b/g wireless)....should be here in a few weeks!

svtcobra, Yup, it has the new Dothan

benz, that's awesome I was actually aiming for a model more like yours, but Duke doesn't have that...though the 15" screen and the DVDRW are hard to pass up, hehe

I might at a later time...I'm using 512 in my desktop rig too, and so far it hasn't proven to be a major limitation. Besides, aren't RAM prices kind of high at the moment?

how is that order gonna work, in terms of name on the laptop and stuff like that? I got a friend going to Duke next year and i'm sure he could get a much greater discount on the IBM laptop i want (T42 2379DXU) than what i'm getting for my Emory student discount (a whopping 5%)

Well, the 4 year warranty is serviced through IBM, not Duke, so you're safe there. Then, Duke doesn't care how many laptops you buy, so you're safe there too. And lastly, IBM warranties are attached to the *product* not the *person*. So your friend could buy an IBM laptop and ship it to Siberia for all IBM cares.

Though, there is one minor problem in all this...you don't really have much selection at Duke--only 3 models. Mine is the "top of the line," and the other two are kind of crappy. Like the next one down for like 1900 is 1024x768 and uses a radeon 7500...

But yeah, if you want one, Duke's discount is pretty good and your friend would have no problem buying one for you.

Uhh i dunno if there is a website or not...my friend said duke sent him a catalogue and he read me the specs for this one. He said there are only 3 models available through duke...I'd ask your buddy for specifics. If he's an upperclassman, maybe he has better options (my friend is a pre-freshman).

thanks for the link netsysadmin. i know that was the old price on the 2379DXU, but they cut the discount from 15% to 5% on those credit card websites, which really really pissed me off. I'll see if i can convince my friend to help my buy that laptop. the only difference major difference i noticed that would bother me would be the 80gb 5400rpm hd vs the 60gb 7200rpm hd in the 2379DXU. Wait actually, that thing has a dvd burner, nice....

The 2379-DXU also has bluetooth and a faster HD. I could have bought my laptop through Duke also, but I opted to go through IBM since I didnt think they would get the laptops in at Duke for a while. Besides I really wanted bluetooth!!

bluetooth isn't a big deal at all for me, but i may just upgrade to the 7200rpm drive down the line if i get that notebook. probable upgrades would be another stick of 512ram, the long life battery and maybe that hd

I was thinking of the 2379DXU too. Through the stockholder discount, I could've had it for 2200...I saw teh discover card deal earlier, but at the time I wasn't old enough to apply for credit cards. But yeah, Duke has'em available right now...takes 2-3 weeks for it to arrive though.

But the Duke laptop is 1.8ghz and it has the DVD burner. The 2379DXU has Bluetooth (which I don't need) and the 7200rpm drive...I wanted the 7200rpm, but I wanted the DVD-burner more

Btw, you can get the hi-capacity battery from newegg for $99, free s/h. I am buyin it there...I think it's about the lowest price from a reliable reseller.
