we used to have the apple version in school computer lab, we never had enough time to complete a game so our contest was to start with bare bones rations and grueling pace to see who could get the furthest before class was over.

fuck, make sure you turn off noscript or else you can't load disk 2 without losing your game.

i was halfway through a grueling pace and everyone was dead but me. twice i tried to ford the river, twice people died. jimmy got typhoid, someone else got exhaustion. fuck everyone else.

This. Even in elementary school I was a ruthless beast of a leader. Keep up or die. Also remember hunting and shooting at everything that moved, regardless of how much I had/needed. Dead carcasses everywhere. Animals and diseased crew members alike.

Oregon Trail is only for the most serious of "core" gamers!

I trade an oxen for 180lbs of food and the next day a thief steals my other 7 oxen!

WTF!!!

I was on an epic pace - with zero oxen I'm left to attempt to trade every day for an oxen. After about 15 -attempts I get an oxen who does a measly 2-miles a day until I get to the next Fort and buy me another oxen.

In this one game:
Thief steals from me 3X
Wagon Fires 2X
Sunken wagon 1X

6243 - the 3x multiplier for farmer is key. And this was after an unlucky game! Wagon tongue broke twice in a row, an ox died, other 5 ox got stolen, and during a river crossing, I lost all but one bullet!

I remember playing Oregon Trail deluxe. In that game, attempting trades didn't waste a day of your schedule. I played as a teacher for the 3.5 multiplier, and near the end, I kept making advantageous trades, knowing the values of all the items, amassed a fortune, went down the river, and had a terrific score!

Problem with the Farmer is you only start with $400 in cash. You have to hunt a lot.

My daughter Death died, but she resurrected and made it to the end. WTF.

I made it through on my first attempt with 395 points, only 1 person left alive. It's a miracle I didn't starve in some places, fruit was keeping me alive. I lost a lot of food early on to a bad river ford attempt.

EDIT: Oops, actually I got 790 points for being a carpenter.

You know you can hunt for food, right?

man, I was doing good right up till the end. I had 5lb of food and I went down the river where you steer the raft, and right as the end landing came up, a rock was blocking it. I crashed into the rock and the 3 kids drowned.
