Original iPad crashing a lot

Ive even reset the thing back to factory and then after grabbing an app like Facebook from the app store it just crashes back to the home screen. Happens to multiple apps even while just idle in them. I was just using chrome to browse Redfin.com and it crashed after finding a property. Luckily Netflix has been ok or I'd just give up on the thing.

Is it because iOS 5.1.1 (latest for iPad 1) isn't kosher with most apps these days? Or is there another cause? This didn't used to happen that often at all. Never happens to my android apps on my phone.

my father's ipad 1 has never seen an update and is working fine. just silky smooth as the day i bought it for him.
in my experience, never update an apple device if it is working fine.

Can't say I agree with that. You miss out on some good features. In my experience, update an Apple device after some guinea pigs on the internet have done it and they say it's fine.

After reset it stayed on this latest version so nothing I can do about that now. I did a search and can't seem to find others saying they experience the same. Strange.

Have you reloaded iOS? Not sure if you mean that by factory reset, of if you did a wipe on the device itself.

Problem is some of the apps require newer OS update in order to work.

Yeah, it's the apps. Don't trust them when they say it's compatible with even the iPad 1. I have the original iPad and a new iPad (3rd gen) and the same app will crash on the iPad 1 and not the iPad 3.

I have had a similar problem. It started a year or so ago and it happens occassionally but whatever crashes it will pretty much always crash it. My idea is that it's running out of memory because it's only certain apps - like the browser - and only when it's loading big/complex pages. But I don't know what is it either.

lol yeah it belongs to my wife's company (she supported these but they're not really used) and they spend stupid amounts on everything yet won't upgrade to the latest ipads. How dare they do this to me?!

So... what is the reason it can't go to IOS6? It's not like old PC hardware can't do a next-gen Windows OS unless it really struggles with performance.

One of the major issues with the original iPad is simply the fact that it doesn't have enough RAM - it only has 256MB of RAM. This causes apps to crash and cause instability when you run out of memory. Try rebooting the tablet or clearing your recent apps (double tap on the home button, then with all of the open applications at the bottom, click and hold on one to get the red circles in the corner, then click the red circle to close each open application).

See if that helps with your issues.

Thanks.. Didn't realize you can task manage like that. Anyway I did mention that it crashed even soon after a reset of the whole thing (wiped completely clean). God damn this 1-button proprietary pos.
