Northrup/Lockheed/Raytheon/Boeing are very SLOW :disgust: in responding to resumes sent, even more via am indivigual vs a headhunter. There system does not allow for fast response unless you have inside connections.

I was seeing jobs that I was fully qualified for, sent in my resume and 2 months later, I get a generic e-mail saying that the position has been filled, or when I send in the e-mail, I get a response that the positions has been filled already or cancelled.

Your mileage may vary - good to get into those places, but may be tough.

I actually know a lot of people who refer people and get them in. Most managers prefer to pick from resumes that were submitted from their own employees (manager told me himself) so I think resumes I refer will have better chances of getting seen then if you submit them on the web. Just so you know, me and my roommate who both work at Northrop did not have "inside connections" but you are right....a lot of people who work here do. But don't give up people, and don't close any doors (even if they are only slightly open )

The applicant will be working with the Flash and/or SRAM product development phase, with focus on the quality and reliability aspects of products that are based on the latest 130um and 90nm CMOS.

Atlanta from Chicago Dracos? I didn't think Chicago was in worse shape than Atlanta.

Hope you get the 2nd interview.

Right now Chicago is horrible for IT jobs well at least for me being a Unix Admin. I can go on computerjobs.com and find over 1000 tech jobs for Atlanta as opposed to 400 for Chicagoland area.

The numbers for Chicago don't look so bad. Look at the numbers for the other cities:
Boston 82
Seattle 54
Silicon Valley 106

Atlanta is actually a tech hotbed.

Man I feel for all who haven't been able to get a job. I was in the same boat. However I found a life saver. It is a business opportunity with a minimal investment and its helping me get my feet back on the ground again. I'm an unfranchise owner, and they company who I work through just partnered with 700 other companies in order to offer a huge internet store. Guess you have to check out my sig to see what that's all about. I'd be on the street if it wasn't for this. Guess you can't count of getting a job after school anymore, things seem to be changing.

I know many of you are probably looking for something permanent, but I need a website designed and am willing to pay a few hundred bucks to have it done. It will be pretty easy programming and requires solid knowledge of mysql and php. Email me at tingwc@myrealbox.com if you're interested.

Over a month ago I disagreed with those who said that the job market was picking up. I stated that if anything it was getting worse. I hate to say this but it looks like I was right.

I am now starting to notice a larger amount of temporary or part-time positions that companies are offering. I hope these don't count as real jobs in the white houses unemployment numbers.

I am really starting to get pissed off and am losing faith in our economy system. You can bet your bottom dollar that I will be supporting Howard Dean or whoever the canidate is running against Bush with some real short term solutions for the recession.

My last job was full time, ending 2 days after 9/11. When I was offered my present job I had the impression it would be virtually full time and telecommute for the most part. The telecommute has turned out as promised, but the hours have dwindled from the original over 20 hours/week until recently where it's more like 2 - 3 hour/week! I would have full health insurance if I averaged at least 20 hours/week, but it soon became evident that I wouldn't be getting that. Indeed, without unemployment I wouldn't even be able to tread water, like I have been. When that runs out, my bank account will start shrivelling up unless I can get some other work. There are issues at "work" but I hate to call them up and ask them what happened to those issues. I wait for them to call me about one thing or another and occasionally download the data from their network - I do database administration and fixes and augmentation of a previously developed system for the most part. Jobs in my area of expertise in my region have become scarce indeed. I applied for one a few weeks ago but I think I scared them off when they asked me how much money I wanted. I said it was "negotiable" but I didn't hear back from them.

Sorry about the news Dracos. I wasn't surprised though. The 1,000's of listings in the Atlanta area are pure garbage spewed by Companies like Monster.com, ComputerJobs.com etc. I understand they are fighting for their survival too but that doesn't make it right for them to post tons of useless posts. That is one of the primary reasons a couple of people in here decided to try and help and make the JobNetworking.org website. It doesn't have the crap on it but not enough people are using it. It will only get better by more people using it.

So are those listed positions just fictional? How can they be total garbage?

Alot of the jobs on those sites are just feelers for recruiting companies to get your resume. I have sent out numerous resumes and hear from about maybe 20% of those I send it to. Right now it seems to best way to get a job is to know someone that works for a company that is hiring.

One thing I've found that is totally different from the "good old days" (97-2000, or so), is that the online job search sites are totally WORTHLESS. Used to be that you could post your resume online, get some calls , go to some interviews and get a job. Now that there is a glut of ex-burger flippers turned IT "professionals" , and more people looking for jobs than jobs available - it's almost impossible finding anything of value on the websites.

I'm finding my best luck with the local newspaper classifieds.

That's how I got my first programming job. They told me later that they narrowed their list down to 5 and chose me as the most qualified. Since then? My next job was by virtue of a recommendation by another guy who I also found through a newspaper add. He didn't hire me but a "friend" of his did. After that I got a few by referrals, but most through online postings (got calls from head hunters), but that was from around 1998 - 1999, and usually Dice.com, although this was largely my assumption - I didn't usually ask a head hunter where they heard about me. These days I get virtually zero calls by virtue of my Dice listing. I get an occasional call from a recruiter who says they are just trying to keep up to date on me but have no particular job in mind, and I always talk freely with those people. I really like calls from head hunters. The great majority of the time they treat you really well.

I proactively found a job at Dice.com recently and sent out my resume (email) and got a call within an hour. I don't think they liked my hourly rate, although I did say it was "negotiable." Didn't hear back from them. They were recruiting for a client, a 2 - 3 month contract position.

I've always been curious about the unemployment figures they publish seemingly monthly. From good times to bad they don't seem to vary nearly as much as I would think. In good times they usually are around 5% unemployment, and in some of the worst of times they get up to 6 or maybe 7%. It seems to me that the actual figures should be double digits, possibly 15% or more. What's up with this stuff? Are these just the people collecting unemployment? What happens when the unemployment runs out?

I can't see myself voting for a presidential candidate who doesn't say they have universal health care at the top of their agenda.

Well... I can only hope.

This weekend while trolling the job search boards, I came across a software QA listing for a company in my old stomping grounds (Rochester, NY - Background: I used to do software engineering for a company in Fairport). Well, job search listing are usually vague at best so I hit the company's website (thankfully this was direct and not thru a recruiter/staffer).

Turns out, this company does EXACTLY what the company I used to work does (minor differences - not the same company either), and further more, their careers page shows a vacant SOFTWARE ENGINEERING position doing the exact same thing I was doing for basically the same type of products I was working on before I got laid off! SCORE!!! So, my resume is on it's way today for all three positions - Software Engineer and 2 different Software QA positions.

I'm hoping and praying that my previous work experience from the company that laid me off will be a key point in my hire - almost as if lightning strikes twice if this happens. I'm expecting disappointment, so that if anything does happen I'll be mildly surprised. Now it's time to sit back and wait and pray that my resume doesn't fall on deaf eyes yet again.

Make sure that your cover letter details the commonality of the work and experience that they are looking for.

Good Luck

I made it a fundamental point of my cover letter to do so. It's a waiting game - this is the company I polled about, they requested no phonecalls from potential applicants, so I get to sit on my hands for a while.

Make sure that your cover letter details the commonality of the work and experience that they are looking for.

Good Luck

Just chiming in here for an update. 3 weeks from now, I'll approach my 1-year mark for being unemployed. All I can say is, it's pretty tough out there. I live in an area where the unemployment rate is 3.1%. I am well-educated and have a great corporate background. I have participated in various "accountability" groups tracking my results of my job search in addition to several "network" groups. I've had 5 interviews over this period of time. Each interview I felt quite confident with and most of them lasted 2 hours in length. Some of the positions were filled with "last minute" internal personnel where were coming off of other contracts - so the company protected those people. Two interviews revealed positions which I had no interest in taking on after going through the interview.

I just hope this economy gets rolling soon. I know some of you are in areas where the unemployment rate is much higher. I do wish all of you the best of luck.

update guys, ive been out of IT for 2 years now, been working retail food, most recently at a deli, just got hired for a help desk position through a temp agency, with a probable hire after 10 weeks. Not great, but 11 an hour at a call center is better than the 7.50 at the deli, and i get free cable. Keep looking, if i can get a job, you can too

<rant> Do any of you actually want to work? I read all the posts here and I posted something weeks ago offering anybody here a job. Only one person emailed me saying that they might be interested, then said they were not interested before they even heard what they would be doing. Besides that, no one else even emailed me. And I'm still reading about people who have been out of work for a year. What are you looking for, a 80k a year job to be hand delivered? If I were out of work for a while, I'd be at a gas station or something, whatever it takes to get some money, and still looking for a better job. </rant>
