10-4-2003 Factory Closures Devastate U.S. Towns

The loss of 2.5 million manufacturing jobs since January 2001 has devastated factory towns across middle America, where once-dominant local employers are pulling up stakes and heading to Mexico or Asia in search of lower costs and cheaper labor.

Ok, so the IT industry sucks. I'm considering a change of careers, but I'm not sure what to get into. I know some things that interest me (mostly business related things, possibly accounting, etc, but I'd be open to carpet laying if that's the only good alternative (please let it not be)). I wanted to find the industries that actually HAVE job openings, but when I do a search on Google all of the sites I come up with seem bogus (I can't believe any web site that lists IT as a hot industry to get into with starting salaries of $50,000 a year).

SO, what is a good industry to get into? Is there an online resource that explores this topic? I'm willing to go back to school if that's what it takes. I know nursing is good and they can't very well ship nurses over seas, but I'm not interested in working to become a nurse. Accounting is an option. Got anything else for me to explore? Accounting looks like a possibility, but I'd have to get the CPA to make any real money and they could easily ship accounting jobs overseas (in fact, that is probably the next industry to go).

Are we doomed to working in retail and blue collar jobs that can't be moved overseas (like construction and roofing jobs)??

I wonder how the job market will look 2 years out. I am very seriously contemplating signing on the dotted line for an ROTC scholarship now. I will be getting my degree in MIS, and with the outlook looking so bleak, 30k/year guaranteed as an officer doesn't sound too bad...

Factory jobs? You mean those jobs where union members are making WAY more than they should be for screwing in 4 screws on a widget? The ones where they go on strike when the company evens THINKS about not giving them a 5% raise every year??

Unions are killing the factory jobs.. The fact you aren't willing to pay $50 to have a pair of jeans made in the U.S. is killing factory jobs.. Not some policy President Bush has recently implemented.

Take it :sun:

It will be the best move you make. It provides the job security, promotion based on performance and the ability to get additional training. You can also pick & choose when you choose to leave (based on economic conditions)

I went into the AF via OCS. 20% pay hike the moment I left vs other EE engineers that I graduated with that actually worked within the same company (Raytheon). Different projects - same geographical area. Value was the training percieved while active duty.

ah you're right, the 30-33k is base pay only. I have heard some things about incentive pay for people with the right specialty. I wonder if the Army has in-house tech support, or if they get a civilian contractor...

The government will usually have a civilian contractor doing the work. As an officer you can choose to get your hands as dirty as you wish.

If there is in-house support, you will be able to request training at a lower level than the techs get; however, you can probably wrangle more detailed training if it can be sugar coated/justified.

For external support, you should be able to get training enough to understand what the contractor is doing; To get training on how again requires some manipulation.

10-9-2003 Jobless Claims Fall to an 8-Month Low

Although the economy emerged from recession in November 2001, it has lost over a million jobs since then. However, in September the recovery managed to eke out 57,000 new jobs.

While the report suggested layoffs were slowing, it also showed unemployed workers were still having a tough time finding new jobs. For the week ended Sept. 27, the number of Americans on the benefit rolls after filing an initial claim fell by a slim 7,000 to a still-lofty 3.64 million.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is supposed to be Good News, I say this because a couple of people made a claim I am only posting bad News.

"Although the economy emerged from recession in November 2001".

Hello????? This is nearly November 2003, 2 years later, WTF makes that kind of Official claim the recession ended 2 years ago? Yet the very next line says over 1 million jobs lost since this magical November 2001 that ended the recession.

Well I'm still waiting to hear back from my headhunter about the job I interviewed for last week. It would be nice if some of these consultant companies would give their candidates weekly or bi-daily updates. He hasn't even answered my email how unprofessional!!:disgust:

Just wanted to report my success. I have a couple years of college in computer science, and a few years experience doing some tech stuff. I quit my last job which was only paying me $10 an hour when things got unbearable in late August. I did a couple of short contracts in September. Today, I just received an offer from a university in Chicago that's going to pay me almost double what I was making, plus benefits, and tuition help so I can finish my degree.

Good for you. I've applied for a job at UOC and haven't heard from them yet.

Got bad news from another recruiter. A position I was submitted for, the company didn't want me because I had so many short term projects. Well gee that can't be helped when your a consultant. He tried to get me in better but it was an U.K. company and they weren't hearing it.

Id have to agree on this. I was in the army and my wife still is. The pay is good, full benefits, 30 vacation days per year, and the 30-33k (depending on rank) a year does not include COLA (cost of living allowance), BAH (basic allowance for housing: O1 i believe gets around $1600 per month give or take depending on location), Seperate rations (money for food: ours is around $340 extra a month). When my wife and I were both in service we would take home almost 5k a month, and it would all go to our savings, because housing, utilities, food, etc was already paid by the military. Its a great option IMHO.

Well heard back from the Recruiter, the client is still getting everything together and we should know something either way by tommorow afternoon. Waiting sucks!!!

On another note I heard back from a company I sent my resume to 8 months ago. Did a phone interview, hopefully they will get back to me for a person to person.

I don't think I can wait til June 2004 for jobs to be created. Thankfully my unemployment has been extended for another year since I worked enough in the past year to qualify.

I'm thinking of leaving my current moonlighting job because they really do want a 9-5er which would cause conflicts with my normal day's work. It's a shop that sells women's and children's clothing. Qualifications recommended are experience using and configuring POS software. POS = Point of Sale...not the other acronym. Working knowledge of FreeBSD is a definite plus, but linux experience is more than acceptable for their needs. The software packages they're using on a 10 node network (yes...10...very small shop) include samba, netatalk, dovecot, fetchmail, sendmail, and they have a yahoo store for their online transactions and use quickbooks to track things. Above all, however, you must be FAST. if you have no technical qualifications, but can pick them up in MINUTES...yes, read minutes....not hours or a day or two...and can implement them on live systems in MINUTES...you are perfect as far the IT portion of the work is done. Lots of footwork involved. Photoshop is a plus. Web systems is a plus. Pay is negotiable. You can ask me what I make, but I'd prefer not to post it.

PM me for details or with a link to your resume.
