Business major and accounting minor here. I'm graduating from University of Redlands in May, 2003. I'm looking for something on the finance side - analyst work preferred.

First of all, welcome back David!
I just got laid off working for a consulting firm and now back on the market looking for new work in the LA area. Luckily I started my own consulting business on the side and making pretty good money. But am still looking for a more stable and bigger company to work for. Wish you all luck.

My 2 cents.

Coming out of college with my Bachelor's in CS on the 20th. Degree comes in mail in jan. Specialized in Networking and Interface Design.

I was webmaster/senior network administrator for a dot com 3 years ago or so.

Been doing freelance work for 2 years...mostly networking,scripting/coding. Spent one year with my own business doing freelance graphics as well.

Spent this past years as senior helpdesk technician for business school.

Looking for work in NJ,NY area but willing to work in CA around LA as well.

I believe they start all of their 4 year degree programmers at 40k+. Definitely worth sending at app to if you are a coder. They do banking software.
I see Jack Henry has a net admin job available in Charlotte, NC for anyone with AS400 experience. CCNA big plus, they say too.

I'm an out-of-work programmer in Atlanta. I'm also riding the "not too much experience" train.

I actually had a windfall this week - 2 interviews, and one next Monday. I'm not getting my hopes up, though, even though those are the first interviews I've gotten in 2 months.

It seems to me that there aren't really companies out there hiring for entry-level positions. Anymore, everybody wants people to already be fully trained in their propreitary software. And HR departments wonder why everybody leaves when the market picks up....

BTW, looks like more unemployed getting dumped on the market by DirectTV shutting down their DSL

Edit: just to add insult to injury, I just received a letter telling me that my unemployment benefits have run out.

Greetings fellow Atlantan. That's a good sign about getting some interviews.

>Anymore, everybody wants people to already be fully trained in their propreitary software.

I know I have to laugh when I see those off the wall Classifieds. They obviously had good people that were fully versed with their stuff and let them go and now they want good people back

Oh my about DirectTV DSL, I know a lot of people using that service. Another @ home type fiasco.

>just to add insult to injury, I just received a letter telling me that my unemployment benefits have run
out

Mine ran out 26 weeks ago and Congress did not do an extension so it is going to even bleaker come the 1st of the year for many.

Is it just me, or are employers offering entry-level money for jobs that they want people to fill that have 5+ years of experience?

I'd like to add that people shouldn't feel so guilty that they didn't try harder for internships while in school. Even internships are not necc. easy to get (I tried and failed to get one) and when you line up for one, often the question is.. well.. what kind of experience do you have? ..... doh! .....

Edited and organized my thoughts better:

South Florida Resident here. No certifications, no degrees. Started Engineering studies at Univ of Miami for IT Major. A year from my associates.

1 year experience in computer help desk work. Working for Compaq/HP and Bellsouth
5+ years experience in web design/development for small companies (creating business presence/Intranets) and one major family owned dot com.
6+ year experience in tech support

Been doing odd jobs here and there through high school and college. Got derailed going to college because of financial issues and had to take this help desk job full time. Currently feeling VERY overqualified for this level of tech support and moving soon to West Palm Beach area out of my parents house and in with a friend. Looking to stay there 1-2 year (or as soon as I can get back to school). Looking to ultimately move up to the northeast. Somewhere in Mass. And hopefully end up going to school there as well. Looking for work in either West Palm or a REALLY good job in Mass.

Jobs of repetition = crappy and would rather not do. And preferably NO phone jobs. But if worse comes to worse, will do what it takes. Trying to get a 14/hr+ paying job to cover basic expenses. I've got a lot of random experience and what I don't know, I learn quickly. I've learned to be very flexible.

Thanks for looking and i'll keep an eye out for everyone else. FYI, the company I work for is currently hiring and starts you at 9/hr and then after 3 months goes to 10/hr with benefits. If you're interested, PM me. (It's phone support, but very good job security)

I was a CS major, with an IT Concentration. Just working at a computer hardware/repair place for now. Thinking about going back to school part time, to take classes. (Quit this job.) Take those classes as Audits (No Grade, just going to learn.) And in the meanwhile, use my free time to do more job hunting. I live in Knoxville, TN....and dmcowen674 I have TRIED Atlanta soo much. No luck.

Yeah, it sux.

KeyserSoze

like you, i tried taking classes as audits cause why should i care about the grade. i'm here to learn.

well. near the end of the semester, i blew off the class.

the next class i took for a grade. and even though i didnt need it, someone in me cared about the grade. and i learned ALOT more than when i audited.

I work in a financial IT-industry data center. There are positions that open every now-and-then at my company. If you live in the Portland, OR area, PM me and i'll add you to a list of people i email when positions open. Job security is excellent, and pay/benefits are very good.

Thanks,

Jason

Wow, how long has this thread been at the top without me noticing it?

I became unemployed in November, and have been looking in the Charlotte, NC area. I have a technical test later today with my old company (strange, but true) that should clear the way to a project starting Jan 1. If anyone has any inside info on opportunities for relocation to the Huntsville, AL or Birmingham, AL areas I am all ears.

I heard that Volt.com seems to be very good in the Charlotte area for jobs.

I am presently "unemployed" (working as a manager in a grocery store wasn't my post graduate plan) in the Seattle area.

Graduate with a BSEE from the UW in June 2001. Specialized in embedded systems. Have about 1 year experience as a build engineer and software engineer with multiple PPC based platforms (working with VxWorks on a set-top photo editing box). I'm open to just about any tech job I may be qualified for but as many of you may know Seattle is nearly #1 for unemployment right now.

Heard the "Dell Interns" used to work at the Whitehouse. They always got a little tip there!

Seems like we could probably start a pretty decent company with the unemployed minds we have here.

I've said that many times, if there is a way to do it (linking everyone up forming a Powerhouse Company of Talent) I wish it would happen. Wishing won't cut it, need the money and backing for it to happen.

Well, here's my story...

I graduated from UCLA with a BS in applied mathematics back in March of this year. I am looking to have a career in programming or . So far up to this point in the Los Angeles area only, I had one phone interview, and talked to three other people in interviews with very little success. However, I will have some work doing web page/database or other programming for some small start-up starting after the holidays. But it probably will not be a stable position so I'll be applying for other positions in the meantime. Other than applying and checking on the status of these positions, I keep practicing programming, reviewing my C++/Java books and, of course, reading and posting on ATOT!
