Just an update on the job websites I've been checking. These are all pretty much technical/IT jobsites but some offer jobs in other professional areas:

Adecco Technical
Ajilon Consulting
Brilliant People
Careerbuilder
ComputerJobs
ComputerWork
FlipDog
Dice
HotJobs
Manpower Professional
Monster
NationJob
Robert Half Technology
Volt
Greater Louisville Works
Kentucky Jobs
MyCareerNetwork (Kentucky)
Queen City Jobs (Cincinnati)

Hope that helps someone (and don't apply to jobs I've already applied for either! )

I'll toss my plug into this thread. I've been unemployed for the past 3 months. I have 14+ years of IT experience that ranges from mainframe application support to client-server applications development and support along with Web application implementation and support. Finally, I have experience in various leadership roles with one of my most recent assignments where I oversaw the daily work of 8 technical Internet support personnel.

I'm located in the Washington, DC area - looking for assignments in Northern Virginia. I'm finding a lot of assignments that require security clearances. Fortunately, I've held a 'secret' level clearance that is current not active. However, the positions are out there.

I don't want to plug this forum up too much because others need to post their information. However, those of us in the DC Metro/Baltimore area might consider starting a Yahoo group where we can distribute our findings via E-mail. We could then update this posting with any relevant details.

PM me if you're from the area and have an interest going the Yahoo groups route. I'm currently connected with an out-placement agency and have picked up a lot of great information that I could share. Also, in my previous role, I used to phone screen and interview quite a few candidates for various consulting positions within our group, so I have some good relationships with IT consulting firms.

Thanks for the Post and ideas. I believe any way we can all to come with in augmenting the best chances in job finding is worth the effort. Thank you specifically for wanting to share in your information and knowledge so close to the hiring process in the IT Industry. What could be a good idea is to start a Central Yahoo Group that points to groups to be formed around the country to post the specific elements in that region. Sort of what we are trying to do here but a way to organize the effort and be more efficient.

From what I understand with Yahoo Groups is that someone starts and for lack of a better word "Moderates" the group, they actually call the person that started and maintains the Membership Moderators. So there would have to be a dedicated Moderator for each group. Wje if you start a Group for your area I will add it in the thread locked at the top as a pointer for those in that area to go to for specific information in that area.

Keep the posts coming everyone, you're doing great. Anyone know of any jobs landed specifically due to the threads here yet? That would be a great success story.

CISSP certifed ? that is the hottest cert right now, esp u have experience in IT field

btw, care to share some info on getting CISSP ? price / difficulty, etc ?

if your security minded, meaning your very anal about IT security, you should be ok taking the test just by studying from these books:

All in One CISSP Certification Exam Guide
by Shon Harris
McGraw Hill / Osborne

CISSP Examination Textbooks Vol. 2: Practice
by S. Rao Vallabhaneni & Devi Vallabhaneni
SRV Professional Publications
www.srvbooks.com

the All in One book is pretty deep and explains very clearly all the different areas that the CISSP exam covers...the practice questions however are crap and are nothing like the exam..

the CISSP Examination Textbook by S. Rao has practice questions that are very similar if not exactly like those on the exam, very vague and confusing, broken down by security area and it explains why this answer is the correct one and why the others are wrong...

what i did was study an area in the Shon Harris book, say for example Security Models and Architecture, then i went to the S. Rao book and did the practice questions for that particular area...the S. Rao book also has a final exam in the back consisting of 250 mixed questions...just like the actual exam......time yourself when you take this...IIRC the actual exam is 6 hrs...

Just thought I'd throw my hat into the ring......last night I got "The phone call" from the agency I was through..it seems the place I was working decided to terminate my contract effective immediately.....I was actually expecting it though...it appears that unless you are really good at kissing a$$ (which I have a problem doing), they don't need your assistance. Anyway, seeing as I am a bit bitter and irritated at this time I won't ramble on. I'm in the Albany NY area and I'll post more when I can think straight......pretty bad time to be let go...with Holiday bills and all....I know things will work out somehow but it sure is tough to swallow......

Speed, Sorry to hear of your situation. Ensure that you apply for unemployment compensation on Monday morning. The payments you receive will assist you in paying your bills until you get back on your feet.

Like you, I was never one to "kiss azz." I was always put off by those who could do it so well. Getting high marks in education and working hard are not enough anymore. I had this discussion with a previous supervisor who interviewed with at one time. I received some constructive criticism after the interview from her. I felt like someone had kicked me in the stomach. Clearly, if one can "kiss up" they can get further along in life than those who just work hard at the tasks they are assigned. The values of our society are completely out of line.

Best of luck to you!

hows it going guys and gals
I've been in this comunity for a few years as a passive reader, that is, until i read this thread. I decided to finally voice something. I'm excited because I am currently working for a company called Pre-Praid Legal Services. This company was ranked #13 in Money magazine as "Top 50 stocks of the 90's" and it has been praised in Fortune magazine to be one of the fastest growing companies in America 2 Years in a row.

"As a New York Stock Exchange Company with over one million members, Pre-Paid Legal is quickly becoming a household name as a revolutionary, rock-solid solution to an often inaccessible justice system.

For less than a cup of coffee a day, a Pre-Paid Legal Membership will provide you and your family with immediate access to top-quality legal protection!" (Im sure everyone who reads this had problems with speeding tickets or getting ripped off by a cell phone company or whatever)

This is a fresh idea in the US and I decided to work for them after hearing that the same concept thrived in Europe. So I'd say its an excellent investment opportunity. The pay is great and there is no office or anything like that to goto everyday (which makes it the perfect part-time job for me cus im a university student). For more info on the product, goto http://www.prepaidlegal.com/go/lee99

and click on the link on the left side that says "The Pre-Paid Legal Product"

Alot of the people who are working above me graduated from my schoool (Georgia Tech), two of them graduated with CS degrees and are now putting full time effort into selling the product (Its only 26$ bucks a month here in georgia for the membership!) and building their team. I talked to one of them and the guy said that he was having trouble getting a job because of the economy and then his friend told him about this company and the great business opportunity that it offers. He is currently making mad dough doing this business. Its all about building a team cus in addition to getting commision for selling the product, you also get overrides (more money everytime somone you recruited under you sells the membership). Its a great compensation plan. Many people that I talk with mistake the compensation plan for a pyramid scheme, which it is definately not. THIS is a rock solid company that uses multilevel marketing, cus word of mouth is always a better seller than advertising. If your one of those people who are sceptical over everything, I suggest you dont waste your time looking into this.

If you remotely interested, I suggest that you spend 15 mins to look at the website...itll be worth it guys....the anandtech forums is a huge network of people and thats exactly what is needed to succeed in this company.
goto http://www.prepaidlegal.com/
and click "business opportunity" on the left menu
after browsing all the links and if you are interested in the job, please goto
http://www.prepaidlegal.com/go/lee99
to goto my own website to contact me. We can set up a three way call with my manager. I've read many of replies and all you are more than qualified for this job. Good luck guys and I hope to be working with yall

ohyea I also left out that although you will be working as an independent contractor, you will have the entire company backing u up. There are paid training sessions all over the country.

I've created a Yahoo! Group for the people in the Washington, DC / Baltimore area that are looking for work. In this group, I will provide updates or employers who are hiring in our area. I will serve as the moderator for the group. Members who live in this area and want to join the group can utilize the following links to initiate the process. Additionally, I have provided additional links for performing various functions associated with this group.

* Group name: atdcjobs

* To Subscribe to the Group: Subscribe
* To Unsubscribe from the Group: Unsubscribe
* To post messages to the group: To post messages to the group
* List Owner of the group: List owner for the group

Information will be added to this Yahoo! group on a very frequent basis as I'm very active in my job search efforts. I'm a part of several job search work teams and I will provide references to those groups which meet in the Northern Virginia area. I'm a bit less familiar with the Baltimore market, but included it in this group because of the close proximity to our area. Any input that I could get from the Baltimore area would be greatly appreciated - as would any input that would benefit the AT members who are looking for work in our area.

Thank you!

This is a great idea WJE, keep us updated on how it goes in your area and hopefully it works and we could spread it across the country.

I'm certainly not in as severe a case as many here, but I'm a student at college looking for a job this semester, as I need a total change in life and thus a job. I'm in Ann Arbor, MI (UM), and am looking to work for up to 20 hours a week...I hope to pay for rent and everything else this semester, and make things a little easier for my parents. I'm very proficient around a computer, but my programming skills aren't quite up to par. I'm a great worker that's willing to learn a lot, and fast. Any ideas, please let me know!

Time to throw my hat into the thread. I have been on assignment through a temp agency for the past 11 months with a well known wireless company. I don't know if its going to come to end soon or not, but any networking is better than no networking, right? Anyway they just had a round of positions open up last month under my current supervisor for internal employees and those who are "external," but are working for them like me. Well my supervisor play favorites and those who don't kiss azz are not a favorite. So, I wasn't offered an interview even though I have been doing the position listed for the past 11 months. I am currently in Atlanta, but willing to move back to Upstate NY(Syracuse area).

Graduated in 2001 with B.S. in Marketing, currently working in the Treasury Dept, go figure. Any job is a great job that is decent pay right now. If you know of anything let me know, thanks.

Just got a job as a computer OPERATOR as opposed to networking guy. It's a step in the right direction and the pay's pretty decent.
Let's just hope I get to KEEP the job... they're impressed so far.

EDIT: An operator just uses software to "get jobs done". Mainly Excel and Word so far. Fairly advanced stuff though....

I have a BS in mechanical engineering with two years experience in quality control and plenty of non-industry experience too. And there's nothing in the south for me.

Some Tips on Job hunting.

0) When looking for a job DO NOT directly ask "I want a job. Can you give me one." to every one you meet. It can put people in an awkward position and you will lose more than you gain.

1) Keep a spread sheet with contact names, companies, adresses, phone number, e-mails, the first time you contacted this person and the last time and anything else you want to track.

2) Update your resume. If you are not getting any interviews try expanding job descriptions, but a rule of thumb is not to go over 2 pages.

3) Don't exaggerate too much on you resume. I found one resume from a person that I worked with, on the WWW and could not believe what he was shoveling in his 7 page resume.

4) Make a targeted company list. A list that you show to people and ask for contacts within the companies you are interested in.

5) Find networking meetings in your town. I live in Denver, CO, and I could go to 3 or more networking meetings a week. A good place to start might be a church. Even if you are not religious stop by after a service and ask about job networking groups.

Good luck

Hey guys. I hate to interjet without reading everything but I'm going to throw this out there for you to think about.

There are a lot of posts from those who have jobs and are looking for something new. Let me offer up this, please learn EVERYTHING you can possibly learn from where you are at. Things will losen up, please be patient. Anything you learn from where you are at regarding busines savy, surviving - whatever you want to call it, is invaluable. I know it's hard to imagine where budgeting and managing basic support-type calls will get you anywhere but keep in mind that dealing wuth 'customers' no matter what you do is key to success.

For those who are fresh out or victim of a 'down size' (right sizing - however they want to term it to make them feel better, try looking into things like operations or process control. Think about it, what do we do as IT professionals? Help control or facilitate processes to make the company operate more efficiently. This are basicc need to knows for any prfessional.

Right now I have moved from IT to operations and supply chain management. How does this apply? Well, I am focusing on systems and how to make IT systems accomplish my business goals of the company. There are a lot of added responsibilities but the bottom line is that I am using IT and molding IT objectives to the needs of the business to accomplish certain business objectives. The experience is awesome, although extremely frustrating. BUT, think of the application of this experience when things open up in the market!

I guess all I'm trying to say is to broaden your scope a bit. You can't get very far in business without running head first into IT. It's a good step into the IT department if you back yourself into a position. Things will open up. New developments and innovations in technology mandate skills and experience. Keep the skills up but get into the backdoor elsewhere. There's a lot to be said for not being a book MCSE, CCNA, etc. Apply it to real stuff, network once you're in. Your personallity and drive to excel will show!
