There's some great advice that's been given so far. Thanks - Spydermag68 and spidey07!
For anyone who is searching for work, follow the simple steps provided by these two individuals. Essentially, that is the same formula that is provided by many of the job search companies at the current moment. However, the job search companies charge in excess of $1,000 per month to dispense the same information. Fortunately, my ex-employer has picked up the tab on 6 months' worth of those services for me.
To expand the two a bit further, I attended a networking function last evening that provided a good break-down for scheduling your day while you are searching for that next position in your career:
Your day should be broken down into a 2/4/2 format as follows:
2 hours: Read up on what's happening in the industry. Get familiar with the companies that are getting large contracts; who's merging; who's adopting the latest technology, etc. Find out more about networking groups are holding meetings in your area. Make plans to attend those group meetings.
4 hours: Spend this time doing administrative tasks. Follow-up with your contacts and on leads. Document your contacts in a spreadsheet as suggested earlier.
2 hours: This time should be spent outside of your house. Use this time to attend networking functions so you can gather more leads that you can follow-through on during the upcoming days.

Just thought I'd throw my hat into the ring......last night I got "The phone call" from the agency I was through..it seems the place I was working decided to terminate my contract effective immediately.....I was actually expecting it though...it appears that unless you are really good at kissing a$$ (which I have a problem doing), they don't need your assistance. Anyway, seeing as I am a bit bitter and irritated at this time I won't ramble on. I'm in the Albany NY area and I'll post more when I can think straight......pretty bad time to be let go...with Holiday bills and all....I know things will work out somehow but it sure is tough to swallow......

Speed, Sorry to hear of your situation. Ensure that you apply for unemployment compensation on Monday morning. The payments you receive will assist you in paying your bills until you get back on your feet.
Like you, I was never one to "kiss azz." I was always put off by those who could do it so well. Getting high marks in education and working hard are not enough anymore. I had this discussion with a previous supervisor who interviewed with at one time. I received some constructive criticism after the interview from her. I felt like someone had kicked me in the stomach. Clearly, if one can "kiss up" they can get further along in life than those who just work hard at the tasks they are assigned. The values of our society are completely out of line.
Best of luck to you!

Just had to chime in on this thread as well... I am in the broadcasting industry (with a little engineering and IT for good measure), and have lost my business, both cars, wife lost her job and our insurance as well. We begged and borrowed to get back to Dallas from Ok. Been here for 3 months now and got 3 hot paychecks from my employer, a new TV network... Now I have a job offer in Houston (my hometown), and no way to even get down there! This economy really sux, I just pawned my laptop for food for my 3 kids...

Ps: Anyone in Houston got a place to put up a family in need???
