Goodluck to you all!

I am a severly under-employeed MCSE+I in Baltimore/Washington DC area (Annapolis). I would like to relocate to the west, mid-west, or southwest to get away from the crappy humidity.

Any leads or pointers in those areas would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a link you may find helpful for job searches...

Again, goodluck all!

For those of you fresh out of school, you're going to need a little bit of experience unless you can find a shop somewhere that hires 'fresh outta school' recruits. To get experience you sometimes have to work in the trenches and do the nastiest of computer jobs...(I don't even wanna say it) While you're working there though, you can continue to apply at as many places as possible. The economy is just down right now and it's going to take a few years before it cycles around. I wish you all the best of luck.

I'll give you a tip too. Make your Resume look dynamic and don't follow the standard every day format(within reason). You want it to stand out.

Right now working on getting my A+ cert. I dont think it will be that bad, just it costs some $$$$.

I have to say though its not fun living at home.

If you're in NYC metro... there's still a fairly large glut of IT people without jobs, including myself still feeling the residual effects of the Internet bust & 9/11. I haven't been able to find more than a handful of freelance jobs and only a few interviews since I was laid off in August of last year... there's lots of people that with even more time jobless under their belts than me. Recruiters generally aren't worth your time since it's still very much an employers market... I only got 1 response out of Monster, another from AJB, a few from personal networking.

I have friends in a few companies like Roche, Merck, TD Waterhouse, Prentice Hall... nada at those companies in terms of 1st level IT... hurts for us younger guys with little or no experience.

In CA, the state and local gov't isn't hiring at all due to a hiring freeze, so IT jobs are not a priority. Priority are revenue generating positions, like finance, auditing, tax rep.

Chalk up another for yet one for an unemployed IT guy w/ little experience.

I have a BS in Computer Science and am finishing my Masters. It was really done in May, but I've been stretching it out (I have a full scholarship w/ stipend -- sort of a job, but low, low pay). I've been doing Jr. Sys Admin [UNIX], Perl/MySQL/Web programming, and grading for the school, but can't seem to get any type of response no matter where I send my resume.

Oh yeah, I'm in the Philly area.

Good Luck to All.

Great idea for a thread... wish there had been something like this while I was enduring the rigors of unemployment. I recently found a job in the IT department of a small hospital in East Texas. I had been working for a local university, but we had a parting of the ways in the Spring, since they decided to downsize. I had worked here at the hospital on a part-time basis before taking the position with the university, and as luck would have it, the job I had vacated was coming open again. While it was only part-time (yuck), it was work, and they kept telling me that it had a really good chance of developing into something full-time. I stuck it out for several months, and then in October, I got the good news... SALARY AND BENEFITS!!! It's a little less than I was making at the university, but there is a lot less stress, so I see it as a net gain.

Like Scarpozzi said, you may have to spend some time in the trenches. It certainly isn't glorious, but it puts experience on your resume. That's the biggest priority, especially if you are just starting out in IT. Certs are good, but if you don't have the experience to back them up, they are just paper to most employers. I'm CCNA, and haven't touched a router since I got certified... no real world experience. That's the kicker. You have to have experience to get a job, but you need a job to get experience.

I can tell you from personal experience that there is hope. I was completely devastated when I lost my job. I was lucky. It only took me 6 months to find a new job in my field. I know there are some out there that have been dealing with it a lot longer. Just hang on. Best of luck to all those searching.

I was out of work from 12-3-2001 to 11-27-02, and just recently found a job at about 75% of my previous wage It's better than nothing(aka construction) though. The new job is with a point of sale software developer.
This is Springfield, MO.

edit: just cuz it might be useful info, I'm 22 with A+ certification, 18 months of network technician experience, and 6 credits shy of my Associates Degree.

I'm going to school right now to get my MCSE. By the time I'm done(another year and a half) I should have an AAS degree, MCSE, A+, and possibly CCNA. I don't have any certs yet, but I need a job now and I don't know what I should look for. What KC5AV said about needing experience to get a job but needing a job to get experience is true but it really confuses me. How are you supposed to get started? How do you get in to the "trenches" so to speak? I'm in Phoenix btw.

Graduated with a BS in CS last December. Guess what, no job. No development experience either. I should have busted my ass to get an internship.

What is a little annoying is that everyone I talk to ask what type of job I'm looking for and I say software development. They always respond with 'Hey my company has an IT dept. You should apply there.' Thanks, but writing a few DB queries, patching up a few VB apps and fixing the copy machine, isn't exactly what I had in mind.

There is an opportunity in the D.C. area for Desktop Support for the Department of Commerce.

I inquired about it; sent in my resume and they told me I had the job Without a freaking interview or a meeting face-to-face .
It was too far of a drive for me though, after further research. The Department of Commerce is on 14th & Constitution Ave in downtown D.C.

Here is the technical recruiter's contact information:

Well, since you asked... while it might really seem to suck, you could always find a place to volunteer; especially if you happen to be in a small town setting. There is a community college extension in my town. If I hadn't landed this job, I was going to volunteer my services a couple of days a week there. They have a pretty good setup, and all of the stuff in the closets is Cisco. Since you (and anyone else) are taking classes, you might try volunteering with your school IT department. If that isn't an option, ask them if they know of any internship opportunities. Call local businesses, and tell them you would like to volunteer some time. Times are changing... we have to change with them. Look for experience in unusual places. It's easier to volunteer when you are in school, and you can get a good professional reference out of it.

I have had no luck getting a software job at all. Not a single interview. I have the skills and working as a consultant has given me real world experience but it seems that no one cares unless you have 2 years of development experience.

I've had many interviews but either the position is eliminated/closed or filled by someone else despite me always being 'at the top of the list'.

Gawd, I'm tired of hearing, "You're top of the list... Just one more person to interview.." Sigh.

I quit my job in June (!). I was working Help Desk for Long Beach Mortgage in Orange, CA. They were acquired by WaMu and since then the IT department went to h**l. Customer service went to crap, staffing went to crap, I got burned on my raise, etc.

I didn't think it would be a big deal to find another job. After all, I've been doing desktop, networking, help desk since '95.

Silly me.

Anything in Orange County, Los Angeles County, etc., or even in Nevada. <----My wife is 3mos preg with my second child and we would like her to stay home for 6 years or so. First child is ADHD (11 y.o.) and with a second child in the home may be difficult to work with. Better she's home all day to take care of them. Which means I have to work somewhere I can afford to support the 4 of us. Groan.

I have a listing for anyone a bit more desperate or less skilled than what this thread is probably meant for:

Job Title: Help Desk Coordinator
Where: Orange County, CA
Description: Assist insurance agents in troubleshooting company software over the phone. Assist internal employees with daily troubles in MS Office Suite, network problems, and basic Citrix issues.
Requirements: Working knowledge of computers, AA or equivalent preferred.
Base Pay: $12.75/hr, $26.5k/yr (base will be reevaluated in March supposedly)
Positions Open: 2-4

Alternatively, if you have Citrix experience you may qualify for a Help Desk II position in which you would mostly be helping internal employees. Some basic SQL knowledge may also be helpful. I do not know pay rate on this one. Also, adding an extra person in Help Desk II hasn't been completely approved yet and if they do hire an outside person I am 99% sure it will only be if they have Citrix experience.

This may be a bit below the intentions of this thread but I figure posting isn't going to hurt and it beats not working! If anyone is interested in these or has questions PM me and I'll give you the company's name and other info.

FYI I'm one of the level 1 grunts.

to anyone in the southwest missouri area, Jack Henry is almost always hiring programmers, and they pay very well for the area. Unfortunately their main location is in the backwoods hick town on Monett, which isnt near much of anything. but the plus side of that is you can get a nice house really cheap. I believe they start all of their 4 year degree programmers at 40k+. Definitely worth sending at app to if you are a coder. They do banking software.
