Im from the NorthEast and I have over three years experience networking, configuring and repairing PCs. I hold CompTIA A+, Server+,Networks+ and MCSE in NT4 certifications. I have been out of work now for close to a year. I have a very large cushion to fallback on fortuneatley, but I dont want to remain unemployed much longer, or it will begin to eat into my retirement funds.

Poop on this economy.

There's some great advice that's been given so far. Thanks - Spydermag68 and spidey07!

For anyone who is searching for work, follow the simple steps provided by these two individuals. Essentially, that is the same formula that is provided by many of the job search companies at the current moment. However, the job search companies charge in excess of $1,000 per month to dispense the same information. Fortunately, my ex-employer has picked up the tab on 6 months' worth of those services for me.

To expand the two a bit further, I attended a networking function last evening that provided a good break-down for scheduling your day while you are searching for that next position in your career:

Your day should be broken down into a 2/4/2 format as follows:

2 hours: Read up on what's happening in the industry. Get familiar with the companies that are getting large contracts; who's merging; who's adopting the latest technology, etc. Find out more about networking groups are holding meetings in your area. Make plans to attend those group meetings.

4 hours: Spend this time doing administrative tasks. Follow-up with your contacts and on leads. Document your contacts in a spreadsheet as suggested earlier.

2 hours: This time should be spent outside of your house. Use this time to attend networking functions so you can gather more leads that you can follow-through on during the upcoming days.

Excellent, thank you WJE. That last 2 hours is critical, even I have not adhered to that as I should and it results in causing going stir crazy.

My job situation's just become REALLY shakey.

I'm currently a tech in an engineering departments at a company that makes medical equipment. I have a BS EET, am familiar with working to ISO 9001 standards, TQM/GMP documentation, surface mount soldering is easy to me. Most of my work was building and testing prototypes and test equipment. I'm also well versed in computers with a little Linux knowledge and a healthy amount of Windows knowledge. I'm familiar with PC hardware from the 386 era up, including SCSI, moderate networking, and data aquisition. I'm also familiar with wiring; both power and data systems. High precision measurement is something that I am very comfortable with doing.

If anyone has any leads in the Sacramento and Sierra Nevada foothills, let me know.

I hope you all had better luck since this thread been up for awhile. Just to keep a reminder to keep your head up. I just had an interview today and they called me back when I left the office! So I guess I did well on the interview. Wish you all luck.

A few months back, I was informed that Ingersoll Rand (Charlotte, North Carolina location) was looking to increase their I.T. staff by some 180 personnel. It was my understanding that these positions would be in their E-commerce area. I'm not sure how many positions still are available. However, for those in that area with a good I.T. background, it might be worth checking out.

Not sure if anyone's still looking, but we're looking for a Parts Technician in Knoxville, TN. It's basic hardware, software, and networking, but it pays well.

I continue to be amazed at the number of job search sites there are on the Web. I have a printed listing of about 250 such sites. I've started to enter these sites into an HTML document which can be utilized as a collection of these sites. Here's what I have so far: Job Search Sites - I will continue to update the table with the sites until all 250 have been entered. I hope to have this activity completed within the next couple of days. I continue to post the updates as I complete them at the provided link.

Unfortunately, my printed listing is not formatted in such a manner that would facilitate the use of OCR scanning software.

Anyway, seeing as I am a bit bitter and irritated at this time I won't ramble on. I'm in the Albany NY area and I'll post more when I can think straight......pretty bad time to be let go...with Holiday bills and all....I know things will work out somehow but it sure is tough to swallow......

Speed, Sorry to hear of your situation. Ensure that you apply for unemployment compensation on Monday morning. The payments you receive will assist you in paying your bills until you get back on your feet.

Like you, I was never one to "kiss azz." I was always put off by those who could do it so well. Getting high marks in education and working hard are not enough anymore. I had this discussion with a previous supervisor who interviewed with at one time. I received some constructive criticism after the interview from her. I felt like someone had kicked me in the stomach. Clearly, if one can "kiss up" they can get further along in life than those who just work hard at the tasks they are assigned. The values of our society are completely out of line.

Best of luck to you!

in most depts, you have 2 experts who know what they're doing. these guys the manager doesnt care if they're rude w/bo, or anything like that. As long as they can save the manger's butt when problems occur and his job is on the line. for the rest of his staff, he'll probably perfer someone who is less techically knowledgable, but have social skills. and one social skill is kissing up. when it's layoff time and things are going to be miserable in the dept, mgrs will probably keep the more social people to keep the morale up. But this is just from my experience.

Well, here's an article in CNN about the fields where jobs are expanding. Ever think of becoming a nurse? or an accountant (although you need to pass the CPA tests)

Just had to chime in on this thread as well... I am in the broadcasting industry (with a little engineering and IT for good measure), and have lost my business, both cars, wife lost her job and our insurance as well. We begged and borrowed to get back to Dallas from Ok. Been here for 3 months now and got 3 hot paychecks from my employer, a new TV network... Now I have a job offer in Houston (my hometown), and no way to even get down there! This economy really sux, I just pawned my laptop for food for my 3 kids...

Ultanium

Ps: Anyone in Houston got a place to put up a family in need???

OMG . I thought the broadcasting Industry took care of it's own better than that and didn't think it was slammed that hard in this. Yes, advertising is down but you would never know it by the stuff they put on the air. So sorry to hear of this News.

If there is no one in the Houston area that can help here in OT, I will copy this over is the Distributed Computing area.

Ugh, I got a phone call saying I didn't get a jr. programmer position here in Los Angeles about 30 minutes ago.

Anyway, I just wanted to also add Craigslist as a source of jobs. However, these jobs are listed in primarily in the major cities (New York, Chicago, LA, SF, etc.). Hope this helps a bit.

It looks like things could be picking up for the state of Virginia:
01-29-2003 07:22 PM

(Richmond, VA) -- Unemployment figures in Virginia are at a 19-month low. The December rate was 3.6 percent compared to the national rate of 5.7 percent. It was the fourth straight monthly decline in the Old Dominion.
