Minneapolis, MN here....

GIS & Web Programming & Development. Graduated last year, high GPA, good school, have used just about every language available, with about 5 years of paid experience in both fields, and still looking for full-time work. Have done some network tech-support too, could probably pass the A+ now, no prob. Currently, I have a few part-time jobs and a few ongoing projects, but nothing that really pays the bills I guess. If anyone wants to see what a person does with a degree in geography/gis, I have some examples on my website... So much for the hot, up-and-coming field that I read and pined for 4 years ago....

Oh well

The bottom started falling out 2 yrs ago but there is signs of somewhat of small comeback. Won't be anything like the 200 Employee and $60 Million to make one website kind of thing like before though.

Ok I'll bite... or put some bait on the fishing line.

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, although most of the major projects I've done in school were somewhat hardware oriented (lots of microcontroller (PIC, SHARC, 68K) assembly programming).

Besides that, I can program in Java, C, C++.

Looking for work in the Philadelphia PA area. Need summer work before professional school. I'll do anything computer related. Or non computer related. Did I mention that I can lick stamps too?

Check profile for contact info.

Might as well throw my hat in here...

I will be graduating from the U of Minnesota in May with a BSB in Management Info Systems and International Business. I'll be A+ certified within the next month, thinking about the Network+ exam too. Would like to stay in the Twin Cities area.

I kind of think this thread is really depressing and at this point, not very practical... I mean, people post their skills and some other people sometimes post success stories, and others post words of encouragement (which are greatly appreciated), but there are SOOO many posts it would be a daunting task to even sift through them if someone looking to hire wanted to do that. I mean, this thread could become an entire new part of the Forum as a whole, and then even get its own subforums, and it probably wouldn't be enough! I guess I am just throwing this idea out there... The support that people have given each other is truly amazing and the horror stories just get worse, one right after the other. Maybe its just the impression that I get from this thread, and I could be very wrong - but how much longer should this list be made? Why is running it indefinitely a good idea? How about those who have posted here, who finally got jobs? Yes they could have edited their original posts, but who is going to notice 1 of 942390 posts edited? Just some thoughts...

For most of you that were laid off last year, you are probably in the same boat as me. The extension to the unemployment insurance has run out (even if you started it in January).

As I've been reading up on this, some states like Washington have another extension (TEUC-X) which allows for another 13-week cycle. This extension was for states that have higher unemployment. But the downside to all this is the extra extension is counted towards all states in the relief bill; the relief program will expire in June.

For Congress to look at another relief bill will be sometime in late May or June. And to this we add the cost of the war and other budget concerns. The only website that addresses this is unforntuately the hard right where they try to say (without the corresponding facts, just heresay) another extension should not even be considered since people are lazy when they receive unemployment. That the only way they ever get a job is when their benefits are close to or have run out.

Yessir, I sat on my ass the whole time drinking and partying with all that "free money."

dmcowen, in response - I am a student at a university, but I do have an unpaid internship. I am also employed by the housing department at Tulane as an RA. Unfortunately, I do not have a summer job lined up yet...

Add me to the list of recently unemployed. I am going to take a look at the whole thread and see what is going on where. If you have time see my other post if you have advice for me.

Actually, the unemployment extension applies to all states. It's a Federal government extension that is provided. I just submitted my paperwork yesterday for my extension.
I live in Northern Virginia where the unemployment rate is low - currently 3% or so. I did read an interesting quote the other day when it comes to unemployment, though: "Being unemployed, you are not only competing with the 6% of the population that is unemployed, you are also competing with the other 33% of workers who are over-worked, under-paid, under-appreciated and also looking for new positions."

For myself, I can definately see the market starting to pick up. I'm getting a lot more responses on my resumé. Plus, now is going to be the "hot" time of the year to get work. Things will slow down again in July - August when lots of people are on vacation. For those of you who are looking for work, put the pedal to the metal and do everything you can to land a position in the next four months. Good luck!!

Just thought I'd post my story as well. Graduated in 2002 with a BS in computer engineering from NCSU. I would like a job working with robotics and embedded systems, but of course would take any engineering or software development type job. I've been applying since I graduated but no luck yet. Found a few more possibilites on this thread so thats a plus! Good luck to you all, hang in there!

Just chiming in with a response to an interview that I had yesterday. I won't name the company (because so many "tekkies" despise them) - but, it was a great interview, a great place to work - very up-beat and it appeared to me that the people there really liked what they were doing. The interview(s) were conducted with three managers in two groups. I was interviewing for a total of two hours. I had answers for their problems. I have some very good "vibes" regarding this position. Lets hope it works out - the final decision will be made next week. I'm a Sr. Systems Analyst - the work will definately pull lots of my skills from working in I.T. for 14 years.

Keep your chins up. I see a lot of movement in the listing of positions and hiring lately.

Finally, don't just wait for the positions to be listed. Make a list of "target" companies that YOU are interested in working for. Then, start "networking" to find insiders within these companies and show them what you can do FOR them. A very high number of positions are filled in this manner. I hear this same process being repeated over and over - hey, I belong to 5 or 6 job netwok clubs. However, I'd say that no more than 30% of the people are following this principle. The other 70% of the people are just frickin' martyrs who are responding to newspaper ads ... and then wondering why they never get a response back - maybe it's because 400 other people have applied to the same position in the newspaper. Clearly, as a candidate, YOU have to be in the driver's seat. You have to be calling the shots. Find out what kind of problems these companies are having - develop a recommended solution or find an answer to their issues and demonstrate how you can "fix" their problems. There's a very, very good chance that you'll land a position with that company - provided the funds are there.

Well, I just wanted to post here for moral support. I know it's been hard finding a job. I graduated in May 2002 with a BS in computer engineering and a minor in business management from Illinois Tech (3.85GPA) and I haven't been able to find a job yet. Most of my friends are in the same situation.

Currently I am employed at a popcorn shop in Chicago (don't laugh, it pays the bills). I hope I didn't go to college just to get a job that I could do after junior high. This isn't what I want to do in life. I really would like a job in engineering working with cool developing technologies, but I'm interested in most things. Anyway, I want to wish everyone good luck...things may be tough now, but hopefully after sticking it out, things will get better.

I graduated with a B.S. in Computer Engineering from VA Tech. My expectation was to find a software engineering or hardware design job. Since I can't find work in any, I was wondering what are some other lucrative computer related career avenues I could try. Also, I was wondering which certifications would probally benefit me the best. I appreciate any advice you all can give me.

As I stated earlier in the thread the Computer job market in Chicago seems to be horrible while some areas are picking up doesn't seem that Chicago is one of them.
I've gotten alot of replies from jobs that were out of state and hopefully soon I will have a job going on 2 months now and unemployment isn't helping at all.

I'd like to give this thread it's own dedicated website and I will provide webhosting free of charge.

Need to think of a short easy to remember domain name (which I will register) and need some help on designing it, anyone have some HTML and PHP expertise they'd be willing to lend me?

Send me a PM, I can be reached via AIM, MSN, and ICQ.
