Do any of you actually want to work?
Dave, Thanks for your offer to provide an opportunity or two for the members here. I have sent you an E-mail -- thanks again !
If I were out of work for a while, I'd be at a gas station or something, whatever it takes to get some money, and still looking for a better job.
While that is true, there are different circumstances for each of us. In my case, I did collect nearly 9 months of unemployment compensation. Also, I did work a few weeks as a 1099 consultant. However, I am looking for a new assignment -- even part time so it can help pay the bills.

I have some tips for all of you who are looking for jobs.

1) Only take jobs with temp agencies as an emergency survival measure. These guys are pissing in the pool that is our job market. If you get an offer for a real job (don't stop looking - ever) take it. Temp agencies also have no qualms about wasting your time and leading you astray.

2) If you need to take a job outside your field of expertise, try to get something that will get you exposed to people that are inside companies that you want to work for. ie the gas mart next door, or one member mentioned Barnes and Noble - if you ring someone up who's buying "VB for Idiots" make your pitch.

3) The best resume fits on a business card. Hoping for someone else to hand you a position is what got you unemployed in the first place. Make your own!

4) Got mad skills but lacking documented experience? Volunteer for a non-profit like a rape crisis center or an animal shelter. Even if the experience doesn't help you get a job, you'll feel good about contributing to society and your self-esteem won't take such a beating (if any). From what I have seen, these non-profs need lots of help with computing.

Best Wishes

Wow, how much do you have left of your pay after paying Gas?

How will you pay for expensive Car repairs because of all that mileage or even have to buy another car?

Welcome to the U.S. of A. sweat shop.

It's kind of sucky here. There aren't any layoffs going on, but no one is hiring.

Yeah, Florida isn't any better. I have been looking for a job since Dec., had a couple of bites but no offers . Just finished my CS degree last year, met one guy at the gym and he is a IT director his advice was go back to school for something else. . His budget had been slashed in half isn't allowed to hire anyone and is told to just pile the extra work load on current people.

This job market sucks. Might start my own business soon if I don't find something.

Feel for you OS. I graduated a couple years ago with a BSEE, got a job right away, 3 months later laid off, 3 months of no job until I found someone that would pay me (Radio Shack of all the horrifying places) eventually got a better paying job at the deli of a grocery store and now I work as the IT person of said store. And hey I almsot make half of what I did fresh out of college.

My advice is if you get an engineering job with decent pay save a nice back up. I spent my extra on paying off my student loan which helped very little while I was jobless. And in the meantime just get anything that will pay, it beats being totally broke while job hunting.

I actually had an interview this week- wow, with the 2 phone interviews I had last month, that's
3 since June, woohoo. The job pays half what my degree is worth, but at this point I'm not
choosy and working for that Phd at night (only 4 years to go, lol). And, miracle of miracles,
the job had benefits.

Crossing fingers here, I'm way beyond desperate, took a $30k loan
for school this year.

I am a recent graduate from U.C. Davis with Organizational Studies with emphasis in public/business administration, with minor in communications.

I have been job hunting for about 2 months and it is really difficult. There are just so many of others who are much more experienced and qualified than I am.
I may have to go back to school for an accounting degree.

Well... I can only hope.

This weekend while trolling the job search boards, I came across a software QA listing for a company in my old stomping grounds (Rochester, NY - Background: I used to do software engineering for a company in Fairport). Well, job search listing are usually vague at best so I hit the company's website (thankfully this was direct and not thru a recruiter/staffer).

Turns out, this company does EXACTLY what the company I used to work does (minor differences - not the same company either), and further more, their careers page shows a vacant SOFTWARE ENGINEERING position doing the exact same thing I was doing for basically the same type of products I was working on before I got laid off! SCORE!!! So, my resume is on it's way today for all three positions - Software Engineer and 2 different Software QA positions.

I'm hoping and praying that my previous work experience from the company that laid me off will be a key point in my hire - almost as if lightning strikes twice if this happens. I'm expecting disappointment, so that if anything does happen I'll be mildly surprised. Now it's time to sit back and wait and pray that my resume doesn't fall on deaf eyes yet again.

They finally called...

I have an interview on Friday. Time to clean off the suit.

9-12-2003 Consumer Sentiment Suddenly Sours

"Confidence took a severe beating earlier in the year in the build-up to the U.S.-led war in Iraq (news - web sites), but its steady recovery appears to have stalled as unemployment is stuck near nine-year highs and consumers are worried about job security."

Many in here certainly would not find this as a surprise.

Even though I currently work for RadioShack in sales (great since I'm a giant geek) I still do my IT thing on the side for a non-profit. Most importantly it is a cause I believe in. Also, it seems education for a career change needs to be well-picked. Seems like a glut of lawyers will be on the horizon among other fields.

If consumers aren't buying as much now... well, lets say that our area seems to be spending anywho.

Finishing my last quarter at the University of Washington. Just got back from studying abroad in Europe and now I am looking for a PT or FT job. I am looking for an entry level position which can take advantage of my math and statistical knowledge, as well as my IT proficiency. I am very, very adaptive and flexible. Need to start paying off my traveling expenses so I am not picky when it comes to work.
