Not too exciting, but maybe good for someone looking for a low-priced player.

Oritron DVD Player @ Target

Ground shipping was $8.95 for me (didn't buy it, but was curious). Doesn't appear to do CDR/MP3/VCD. No experience with "Oritron" (sounds like a sexual device in a Woody Allen flick...), so I can't say how they are one way or the other.

actually according to the compatibility list at the Oritron DVD Player DVD650 just may do VCD/MP2/CDR. they have the region free hack too.

If that's the case, this might be a steal at this price, especially as a secondary unit.

Kinda a crappy DVD player, but cheap.
Some drawbacks: No way to disable macrovision
Cannot play PAL discs unless you have a mult-standard TV
Many people report playback problems with regular DVDs
on this unit.

Can be made to play VCDs and to play discs encoded for other regions
through some menu hack. (Although playing discs from other regions
is only semi-useful if it can't do PAL->NTSC conversion).

Personally, I'd pay $30 bucks more and get something better like
a Sampo DVD-611.

I had an Oritron before I got an Apex. I returned it the day after I bought it because it had problems playing some DVDs (couldn't play Matrix).

An Apex 1500 is only $10-20 more when it is on sale and it'll play just about anything you put in the tray (DVD, VCD, SVCD, MP3, CD, CDR, CDRW). Worth the extra $$$ I think.

I had an Oritron about a year ago, worked so-so until it decided it didn't want to eject anymore. Took it back to Target and they had to take the darn thing apart to get my disc out. I guess you get what you pay for.

I'll also chime in on this one. I had an Oritron DVD player, model 200 I think, from 800.com. Everything about the player exudes frugality, cheapness, etc.. The remote was flimsy and the buttons didn't register well, problems reading certain discs, etc.. All of it added up to giving the dvd player away as a gift (it does make a good, cheap gift though ). The 2 Apex 600As and an Apex 1500 that I've dealt with never gave me any problems.

You might not save $$$ immediately, but save yourself a headache and go with an Apex player or anything other than the Oritron.

there is a reason why best buy dont sell them anymore, there was too many problem with this DVD player. it has problem with any movies not just matrix. even for 50 buck it is still not worth it because this thing is more trouble then it's worth.
