i wasn't talking about fancy gui eye-candy overhead, and cutting down the services is helping a bit but It doesn't make THAT much of a difference IMO.

Well I notice the difference in performance between my xp box and most others' I've worked on. I don't think NT 4 would be any faster really.

So? They did the job. X86-64 is the same old x86 with 64 bit extensions, it does the job. Back when i used 98/ME they were fine tbh. XP is far superior, and im glad it came along but tbh i didnt think "i hate this goddamn OS!" every time i started up with ME. It was easy to re-install too helped things a lot.

Windows XP x64 is a true 64-bit OS. All 32-bit programs are run with emulation. Windows 98/ME weren't even real 32-bit operating systems. They should have never been supported for as long as they were.

Windows 98/ME are completely different from Windows 2000/XP and developers having to write software using the same files and installer which is compatible with two completely different OS platforms has most likely hurt performance the last few years. That is the biggest reason why those junker Windows 98/ME opertaing systems should have been trashed long ago.

don?t get me wrong, win2k/winXP beat the crap of NT 4 in robustivness (did I just made up word?) and in newer hardware support (which is why on newer rigs 2k/XP will be faster), but what I am talking about is efficiencies, I am talking about kernel and core subsystems overhead and memory footprint.

Just one example to illustrate my point - Photoshop 5.5 lunch time (application is up, running AND is responsive to user request!) on Pentium I 233/MMX, 128MB
windows NT ? 1.3 sec.
windows 2K ? 1.7 sec.

You'd squabble over less than half a second on a system slower than my GPU running old, retired software?

no , my point is that NT 4 is more efficient, sheesh.

NT 4 is alright. It is certainly better and more efficient than POS Windows 98/ME.

You are insulting everyone else yourself. If you can't take the heat, don't dish it. ... You're the one who said games were your priority, so I would imagine you're the younger one here.
I'm only insulting the flamers who trash other people's choices in OS's... nobody else... if you're a flamer, then YES, I'm insulting you. Anyways, if that's what you want, fine... I'll step to the plate...

After serving my country for 20 years in the United States Air Force (I joined when Ronald Reagan was President... do you even remember him?), fighting in more then one conflict, I'm RETIRING in three months time... I also have a wife and child... I'm certainly not the young one here. The simple fact I enjoy games from a bygone era would even indicate more the fact that my memory lasts longer then last year's games, which I expect is all some people around here are capable of (if you could put two and two together, I think you would have figured that out... todays 12-year olds usually aren't interested in turn-based computer wargames from 1997). I was serving this country when most of the flame posters here thought a good time was sitting in front of their television set, watching Bugs Bunny and gnawing on a fudgecicle.

However, I don't find a need to bash an OS or someone who chooses to use an older OS simply because I do not... that's immateur. However, I feel free to call-out somebody for being a punk for no reason then they think it's cool to trash other people's choices in an OS. Don't make me go into my "Back in my day, we had a little thing called respect for elder OS's" tirade.

BACK ON TOPIC
Soviet... good luck with the multi-boot procedure... have fun... it can be rewarding having multiple options for an OS... have fun, and don't let the old-OS haters ruin the mood simply because they hate what they do not comprehend outside of their tiny worlds.

Booyeah!

My point seems to have been missed. Your benchmark doesn't mean anything. The test system isn't anywhere close to a normal system these days(new computers in the last 3 years have been 10 times faster than that), the software is old, and the difference is within the margin of itdoesntevenmatter. You didn't prove NT is more efficient at all.

The only computer games (ie. not console or portables, except computer portables, like PDAs, or whatever, I just wanted to ramble a minute, it's fun, sometimes, but sometimes it gets boring and I think about chipmunks in a forest, then a wolf comes and gobbles them all down, it's sad really, until you think about the wolf needing those chipmunks to survive, then it's not too bad, but still a little sad, for the chipmunks anyhow, if you're a wolf I guess it's a happy story) I've been playing lately are older than I am.

I don't think you understand the moral right of every wolf/dog creature in the world has against squirrels. To us they seem like intellegent little fuzzy things with a big fluffy tail and mischeivious attitude... but they know otherwise..

As far as games go.. Best games nowadays for me are fun distractions.

Dammit Jim, I just want a video game! Not a god-damn alternative lifestyle!

Squirrels are quite evil, I admit. But chipmunks are harmless little creatures.

To the OP...

I use Windows XP Professional. I have a dual-boot with Fedora Core 4, and I was going to try to use it exclusively about a month ago, but my wireless card doesn't have Linux drivers. I found out I could use a wrapper to use the Windows driver, but I didn't feel like messing with it at the time.

I dual boot with Win XP and Ubuntu.

I believe XP is a great operating system though, and have little use for Ubuntu in my box, though I like to keep it around for learning purposes.
