With Microsoft's crackdown on silly not quite so legal software. I'm looking at running 3 to 5 copies of Linux on a bunch of boxes to setup solely for folding.

*Would like a GUI
*Something that I don't have to compile myself.
*Linux Newbie friendly.
*Not a huge a$$ .iso
*Runs F@H or Rosetta.
*Preferably not prone to problems.

Go Fedora.

It is so much easier to setup for crunching as you actually have root access and can exit out of the GUI and everything to maximize CPU time.

NVM I found it. I was surprised to see that Red Hat has the copywrite on it.

Fedora is the freeish version of Red Hat. It's updated more often than Red Hat though.

Let me throw in another OS I've never used: Overclockix. It hasn't been updated for a year, but it's supposed to have BOINC and F@H preinstalled.

This one was mentioned in another thread. If I get some free time, I was going to try it out, Knoppix based.

[EDIT]
LOL, I guess I should have refreshed before posting. Ken beat me to it.

Even though the components are a year old, I don't know why you couldn't upgrade the DC clients.

Year old versions of BOINC are not going to do you any good.

You need a lot of RAM, as it will have to store BOINC, the science app, workunits, and results in memory.

sudo -s will get you a terminal with root access....
