I just made it to Mavericks and I'll be staying there for a long while, since Apple decided to infect Yosemite with iOS 7's appearance downgrade.

I'm not as concerned about the aesthetics, although actually I welcome seeing some changes.

As for bugginess, Mavericks (after a few point updates) is decent. Mountain Lion is also pretty good, for the most part.

I have not been as impressed with Lion though. It really felt like a Mountain Lion beta to me, and the unfortunate part is that you can't upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion on older machines, and at least 10.7 Lion is required for some Apple software, even though 10.6 Snow Leopard is less buggy IMO. The one that irritates me in Lion the most is that my dock disappears and I sometimes have to log out and back in to get it back. This didn't happen on 10.6 on the same machine, and it doesn't happen in 10.8 or 10.9 on other machines.

10.5 and 10.6 were rock solid for me on my C2D.

Mavericks seems good on my rMBP apart from my qnap not working with time machine anymore . I'm looking to score a 2TB time capsule for back up purposes.

If anything I'll update just for the icons

Kidding aside are they every going to make it so you can setup the guest account with some basic settings so you can use it as a public computer account?

Used to be able to do some Cli to make it work in 10.5-10.8 but in Mavericks they broke it. Some people say to use the admin config tool but that thing is a joke.

You've always been able to make a guest account. Or just make a regular account with no password and parental controls.

I'm not too sure on the whole ios7 look honestly. I mean it's kind of clean but it's just too candy like.

Yes, 10.9 Mavericks changed networking somehow, including implementing SMB2 as the default for general file transfers (albeit not with Time Machine). I've been told it's mainly Apple's issue, but nonetheless Synology updated their OS and it all works fine with 10.9 Mavericks now.

Note that in Mavericks, although the default networking protocol is SMB2, Time Machine still doesn't work over SMB2. It requires AFP. Could that be related to your problem somehow? I don't think so, but I'm just wondering. Have you tried turning off SMB2 to see what happens?

I don't really use my qnap for anything other than Time Machine. I should probably use it as a dlna with my PS3 but it's something I have to figure out. Probably works better with the newer version of the firmware. I've been plugging my Macbook to my receiver for years. I should probably use it to torrent things as well instead of leaving my rMBP in sleep mode. I wonder how long until the battery is shafted on it? 2yrs? 3yrs? It's about 300 cycles until the batter is at 75-80% charge? I'm really impressed with the battery, screen and generally the whole package so far. Should have bought it sooner but wanted to see what they were going to do at conference. The screen is so much better than my C2D Macbook screen it isn't even funny. I didn't notice as I didn't have anything better to use

I've heard better things about Synology than qnap. I've spent about 8hrs trying to get the thing to work and I'm currently without proper back up apart from my business folder with dropbox and HD clones last week.

Getting a Time Capsule is probably a good move. Almost every new version of OS X includes some change to AFP that breaks Time Machine compatibility over a network connection until everyone can get caught up. I don't imagine that same problem exists with a Time Capsule but I don't have one so I can't say for sure.

The integrated batteries are rated for 5 years and 1000 cycles until they hit 80%.

Did anyone get the beta invite?

Presently Apple has only seeded developer preview 2, so no beta is out yet AFAIK. DP2 leaves a lot to be desired, having seen it dual booted on a MBP. Perf and battery life are far from where Mavericks is, and I would not get excited about using it as my primary OS in these stages.

Yeah, a developer friend has it installed and says it is buggy as all hell, as is iOS 8.

I'll back this up. iOS7 DP1 felt a lot more stable when it was first dropped than iOS8 DP1 felt. I don't know if Apple is slipping quality wise, is behind on the schedule or what happened, but given how many bugs I still regularly see in iOS 7.1.1 (for example, the messages not showing up issue) I have pretty dim expectations for iOS8 (and will be seriously looking at alternatives to Apple when I'm up for an upgrade from my iPhone 5 later this year. I'm ready to kick Apple to the curb, but I don't know what can replace it well.)

I'm sure there is an Android device that can fit the bill. Maybe Galaxy S5?

I just signed up after all (for a secondary machine). The tipping point was this:

http://techblog.netflix.com/2014/06/html5-video-in-safari-on-os-x-yosemite.html

Netflix will be using HTML 5 and Premium Video Extensions (including Media Source Extensions) in Yosemite. No more Silverlight bugs, better battery life, and I presume more HD content. Netflix in Windows 7 and Mavericks with Silverlight have limited HD content.
Yosemite's public beta is now out.

However, I haven't gotten a redemption code (yet). I wonder if I signed up too late.

Apparently if you sign into the beta site you can get your code there.

So I tried:

Must be getting totally slammed.

Installed the beta tonight, so far so good. Post install I gained 3-4GB of SSD space. I have no idea what apple does but every time I go up a major version I gain space... awesome. UI looks much clearer and believe it or not feels snappier, but dark mode is a no-go, it's buggy. I like most of the design choices, but some artwork is kind of questionable...

Overall very pleased. Can't wait to try continuity features as soon as I can put a beta on my iOS devices.

Right I need some help please.

I've been fiddling with my menu bar within Yosemite, but I've cocked it up and Accidentally didn't back up the core system files.

If someone who has installed the beta could kindly go to "SSD/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu_Extras" and upload all of the files in there to somewhere where I could download them I would be eternally grateful.

Replaced some of the Yosemite files with Mavericks ones and it's causing my menu bar to not function properly.

There's a lot of hidden crap in OS X that you don't really need. Printer drivers and what not. Maybe those weren't included in the beta.

Anybody got Yosemite running on an older MacBook or MBP? Notice any performance hit compared to Mavericks? 10.9 runs quite well on my Late 2008 Macbook Unibody.

I installed Yosemite on my 2010 MacBook Air, but haven't played around with it too terribly much yet.

OK, I can't tell if it's my MacBook that's too slow or Yosemite is buggy...

Probably a bit of both honestly.

Ironically, Feedback Assistant crashed when I went to report an issue.
